I’m really weird about matching equipment. Really weird. If I have a Titleist bag, I’d better have at least some Vokeys in there if not a more extensive set. Same with a Ping bag, and so on. Sun Mountain and Vessel and Mackenzie bags and the like can have any clubs in there. Titleist has an “out” if I played the ball….but I play a Srixon, and I need a new carry bag, so maybe that Srixon bag that’s on sale might work. 😁

 

There is no justification for this whatsoever, it is strange! I also prefer more consistency in the brands in my bag. Right now I have Ping D & FW clubs, a Maltby 9w, PXG hybrids, Sub70 irons and wedges, and a Grace putter. Why this bothers me is anyone’s guess, but don’t think that 9w is safe. It will be replaced by a Ping, make no mistake. 

To be a golfer is to be tetched in the head.   We all have issues.

Answers for the Representative in the Lounge from Pittsburgh, PA the honorable Mr. MS.

Yes I use Titleist Players gloves. Yes I use Pro V1's, but I am not only a Titleist golf ball guy. 

I also use TP5's, Bridgestone Tour B RX, and Srixon Z Stars. I have a Titleist golf bag. I have a dozen or so Titleist caps and visors. I wear Foot Joy golf shoes, and I have a good many pieces of FJ golf clothing. I do not have one club in my bag made by Titleist.  I believe the last Titleist golf club I played was a 983k driver.

It's another HS golf match this afternoon! Today there are four teams competing. Christ School Asheville is hosting. Two of the teams are from Charlotte and one is from even further away in High Point, NC. Back when I played high school golf in St. Louis the furthest we would travel for a match was 45 minutes. These kids today will drive hours away for a match. Different times.

My first round of the year was a blast. Felt so good to finally get back out. I have a feeling my shoulder has damage that needs more attention, but I’m going to do everything possible to avoid another surgery. Shoulder surgery recovery is the worst! At least I know I can make it through 18 holes.

 

Given that it was my first round of the year, I was pleased with my game. I hit some of the longest drives I’ve hit in quite awhile - one 252 and one 249 - which are long for me. I even hit the Hogan 1W (is that a driver?) 180 right down the middle against a 30mph wind. My bad shots were with my woods, which I normally hit pretty well, but I was topping them yesterday. That, and missing a few short wedge shots - just a practice thing to get that swing rhythm back. My iron play was the best part of my round. Confession: I went the opposite of most of you - I bought some geezer sticks. Cleveland Launcher XL Halos with senior flex. Man, are those things easy to hit! And longer than my Cobras. This was my first round with them. Yeah - I’m a hack, but a self-aware hack!
 

41 on the front and a beer-fueled 45 on the back for an 86. Could have easily been 4-5 strokes better. Forgot to take pics.

We get quite a few high school and junior tournaments at my home course. I always enjoy watching them play.

... Obviously the Autoflex shaft has a very unique flex and bend. I have always felt that in general a smooth swinger needs a more flexible shaft and a quick hitter needs a stiffer shaft. The auto flex needs time to sync up at impact and even with a late release it can do that as the speed is highest at impact. But a fast from the top explosive swing has no time to catch up and the less bend the better.

... While I think there is a subtle difference between premium pro balls, it is marginal for most unless it is a low or high spin ball. I like to play the same balls so I know what to expect on any given shot and I am playing the new TP5x now but if forced to use a Maxfli Tour, Z Star, ProV1 or Chrome Tour I think I would be just fine.

Quick recap of yesterday's round (my 12th):

 

Quaker Creek, Mebane, NC  ($25 sr rate)

49/48=97 

33 putts, 10-14 fairways (10-12 with driver, 0-2 with 3W)

0 lost balls, 0 PS, only 1 punch out

70 degrees, sunny, steady 10 mph wind on the back 9

 

We let a single thru on the 4th and we had a great pace and clear sailing until we left the 9th and headed towards the clubhouse and 2 bros were on the 10th tee box.  We went inside, and as we came up to the box they were half-way down the fairway, spraying balls left and right.  So much for clear sailing.  On or about the 15th my mind began to wander and I finished 4-5-6-7 (+6).  

 

Highlight of the day was another strong performance by Mrs NCL with a solid 101.

On a different note, I was just trying to get around the course as I am still really tired with little energy from the tail end of covid. But got paired up with a guy on the Canadian Tour and the #1 Girl Am in AZ. She was playing my home course for the first time. She is the #1 AZ Girls State Am and a Jr in High School. Some highlights playing from the forward tees:

6 birdies and 1 bogie. The bogie was a downhill birdie putt that just got away from her, rolling past 7 feet and she missd the comeback.  

#5 401 yd poor 5 she had 100yds to the pin

#6 300yd par 4 she drove it in the green side bunker

#8 223yd par 4 over water and she drove the green with a hybrid

#10 432 yd par 5. Driver - 5 iron to the front of the green

#14 308 yd par 4 she drove into the green side bunker

#18 376 yd par 4 a little downwind and caught a slope leaving her 45yds to the pin  

What a treat playing with someone that good. Found an article about her:

😁 then you are good! I’m fishing for justification to grab a Titleist 4 stand bag in a cool color combo I just found. I like the Srixon Q Star Tour Divide ball too much though, especially putting face-on. This compulsion 😂
 

983K was a sweet stick. I had one and was more consistent, but my Callaway FT3 Tour was so long I could not resist it. Longest driver I ever played. I think I would have been better committing to that K though.

Good Morning MS. I too played the FT3 driver by Cally though not the Tour model and it was for me the longest driver I had ever hit at the time too !  Man that sucker was long.

FT3 Tour with a Speeder 757….hit the longest drives of my life with that cannon. Sounded good and man it was Deep. I also was prone to the WTF? huge foul ball that would come out of nowhere….inability to prevent those and play smart(er) when they did happen is why I never got better than I did. That, and Son #1 came along. 🙂

Run-off has not started yet so the skwalas are still around (that 1" long stonefly photo I posted about a month ago).  I don't get too cranked up about bugs so I saw it above the back door and took a photo.  Then while I was sitting in the office I got a text which I had to screenshot.
