Best 2-hybrid (for us who can not hit 3-wood)

linoleum

Recommended Posts

Finally had the chance to test some options. But local shop did not have 2hy of all models.

After some initial testing with Callaway (UW17 and Paradym 18), G430 19, Cobra.

Stand out performer for me was Cobra King Tec 19 lofted down. Look, feel and performance was best.
Now pondering whether to buy the King Tec 17 untested or just go with the 19.

Hard to say.

You have a 16* CLK set at 14* and find it hard to elevate off the turf at 145-150mph ball speed, so I would set the CLK up at 17* to see what the elevation looks like.

Not all hybrids are designed the same so, the CLK at 17* might be different than the Cobra at 17*

At some point between speed, launch and spin, there is diminished returns, so the 17* may not be better overall. You may or may not gain a few yards off the tee, you may or may not gain anything off the turf.

When I had an 18* Callaway Apex hybrid (2016) I tried to find a longer hybrid since I wasn’t carrying woods, so I sent it to Callaway who flattened the lie 2* and I put a shaft that was 1” longer in it. I gained a little off the tee, but it made it worse off the fairway for dispersion, so I figured loft is king, I bought a Adams XTD TI and lofted down to 14.5* and it went the same distance as the Callaway with the longer shaft, so I sold both and bought a Tour Edge CBX119 16* hybrid……. I may have gained 4-5y off the tee, but I found nothing was better than the original set up I had with my 2016 Apex off the turf……. Diminished returns. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I ended ditching the hybrids all together and did Howard’s DIY Driver tune up with my fairway woods, and have found that I like them shorter than standard (I play my 5w at 41-1/2”) and heavier SW (D3)

Hah... yea its quite a variety. I went a little crazy during the brunt of the COVID pandemic for those couple years. Constantly buying/selling, trying different heads/shafts, iron sets, wedges, etc. and finally almost all of last year my bag was set (Cobra wedge is the only new thing and I added that just a few weeks ago).

Im very happy with everything now and dont have plans to change anything.. except for that backup set of Nike Pro Combo irons staring at me from my closet that I'll probably put into the bag this coming summer

I havent been on this forum too long but I guess the WRXer in me is finally starting to show 😂

I also have the Nike ProCombo as the backup set and they do come out!

Good thread, Srixon ZX 2H at 16 degrees with the Hzrdus shaft works great for me. I hit it around 210-220, just more consistent than the 3W

Hi!

Last 10 years, I have been using 2+4 hybrid, then going 5-iron. Every second year or so, I buy a second hand or even fitted 3 or 4-wood to test out. Result is always the same, I am inconcistent with fairway woods, and barely get any gain in ballspeed and overall lenght. I have even tried 3+ wood, same poor results.

Currently I am using:

16 degree 2020 Mizuno CLK, set at 14 degrees, 95g Speeder X shaft standard lenght.

21 degree Callaway UW, stock 80g RDX Black 6.5

These gap pretty well. But the CLK is difficult to elevate on a tight lie, and I would not mind a few extra yards.

What is the longest hybrid out there to test? Im looking for max ball speed and low-ish spin. For reference the current CLK is about 145-150 ballspeed, spin 3600-3800.

17 degree Cobra King Tec 2023, anyone hit it?

17 degree Ping G430, should be easier to launch, is long enough?

16 degree new Mizuno STZ-230 hybrid, anyone compared it to CLK?

I am in Europe to not possible to test/buy the Callaway Super Hybrid.

Looking forward to any feedback!

What about throwing a 5 wood in?

I’m following this thread. I just received my Ping G430 26* hybrid to replace my 5i as I’m just not consistent enough with it. The last spot in my bag I need to settle is what I use below my driver. I have a TSi3 16.5* 4 wood that I am awesome with off of a tee but I’m never comfortable hitting off of the deck. Debating getting fit for a G430 2H as I love the reviews it’s received on how easy it is to hit as well as it’s consistency.

Titleist TSR2 9*

Ping G430 3w & 5w

...get a G430 3 hybrid with the same shaft instead, loft it up to the max, and take your chances. 👍

I currently play the Mizuno clk hybrids with e Mitsubishi av blue 80hy stiff flex.

I have the. Set up as follows.

2 - 14deg 220 yards

3 - 19 deg 200 yards

4 - 24 deg 180 yards

When I hit them well, I really love tuem, in fact I hit that 2hy all the time. Love it.  I recently switched to ping g430 lst driver in the Mitsubishi raw white 65x shaft and I am loving it.

So I ordered 3 hy shafts for in same av raw white 90hy stiff.

But now while I wait for shafts to come in n I have the tech to. Order 2, 4 and 6 ping g430 hybrids. I am sure they will. Be more forgiving then the 2020 clk hybrids. The only real downside is the damn price, I cannot find them for less then $250 per club.  Trying to find heads only as I really do not need a set on ping hybrid shafts laying about.

I have no complaints with Mizuno hybrids, but pings are rated like 1 or 2 everywhere I read about them.

I want a bigger gap between the hybrids hence the 2,4,6 plan.

Out of all of these bombers, which ones were the lightest.  Been using a rbz 3 hybrid for years.  It's super light and I can smoke it.  Picked up the new Callaway paradym super hybrid and this thing is heavy.  Only has a 75 g shaft in it.  Buy I can't whip it with speed compared to my rbz.  I'm basically looking for a 15/16 degree to use only off the tee.  Play at a lot of local courses and driver is hardly needed/plus I get into trouble being inconsistent.  I looked at the adams ls xtd 15 and that thing is a 3 wood correct?

Can't say I've hit all the hybrids in the world, but I'm kinda surprised that there's no mentions of TM amongst all this Mizuno, Adams and Cally love?

My Sim2 17* 2H will struggle to get taken out of the back for a longgggggg time, it's just a weapon. HZRDUS RDX 95g good for 230y off the tee, middle of the fairway all day, every day. Certainly handy when I'm spraying the big stick 🤦‍♂️

I did try my CLK at 14*!and noticed the same thing. Very low and kinda squirrelly. 15* has been good. I’m hoping for even more pop out of the new STz 230 and better sound. I’m looking for the magic 260y and 230y clubs. Hopefully these are the tickets! As promised in my above post, order is in at DDs!

How did the STZ 230 16° work out?

I'm looking at picking one up and delofting to 14° as a tee club.

What was the length like vs a 19° hybrid?

Thanks.

The STz 230 2 hybrid set at 15 has been awesome! I play it at 42” as a 3 wood replacement. It does a fantastic job at keeping me in play and being the 260+ club I was looking for. I ended up selling the 22* and getting a 19 to play as standard loft, +1/2” and thats my perfect 230 club. Over a year with these in the bag is a record for me!🤣 I can’t say enough good things about this hybrids!

Thanks man. It's the lowest lofted hybrid on the market (delofted to 14°).

So I wanted to know if the club was actually capable of that distance. And you've answered that 👌.

I don't like the inconsistencies of the driver or 3 wood.

I like to use a hybrid off the tee. I have the mizuno clk 16 degree that does the job, but looking at the STZ to replace it with.

This is from last year, but in their comparison test, the TM Stealth Plus had the lowest spin of the dozen or so hybrids examined.  Likely, this'll be true for the Stealth2 line as well.

Something else to consider...

I wouldn't mind looking at a 2H or something like a Ping Crossover or Titleist/Srixon driving iron that's 17-ish.

Ping Rapture DI is 18 degree with a longer than standard shaft goes like a rocket. 2014 so can get one on eBay for about £100 these days if you are lucky
