Best 2-hybrid (for us who can not hit 3-wood)

linoleum

Recommended Posts

Hi!

Last 10 years, I have been using 2+4 hybrid, then going 5-iron. Every second year or so, I buy a second hand or even fitted 3 or 4-wood to test out. Result is always the same, I am inconcistent with fairway woods, and barely get any gain in ballspeed and overall lenght. I have even tried 3+ wood, same poor results.

Currently I am using:

16 degree 2020 Mizuno CLK, set at 14 degrees, 95g Speeder X shaft standard lenght.

21 degree Callaway UW, stock 80g RDX Black 6.5

These gap pretty well. But the CLK is difficult to elevate on a tight lie, and I would not mind a few extra yards.

What is the longest hybrid out there to test? Im looking for max ball speed and low-ish spin. For reference the current CLK is about 145-150 ballspeed, spin 3600-3800.

17 degree Cobra King Tec 2023, anyone hit it?

17 degree Ping G430, should be easier to launch, is long enough?

16 degree new Mizuno STZ-230 hybrid, anyone compared it to CLK?

I am in Europe to not possible to test/buy the Callaway Super Hybrid.

Looking forward to any feedback!

I play the G425 17 degree 2 iron and it's a bomber! So easy to hit, keeps spin up all across the face.

I'd imagine the new G430 will be much of the same. I'm actually thinking of changing out my TSi2 4 hybrid for a PING as it's just that much easier to hit and the results are SO consistant.

I used to carry a low lofted hybrid as my longest club besides my driver.

I went from a 2016 Callaway Apex 18* that flew pretty high, so I bought an Adams XTD ti at 16* that I set at 14.5* and it flew just as high as the 18* Callaway, so I ended up with a 16* Tour Edge CBX119 hybrid that was a bomber.

if you have trouble elevating off the deck, then the Adams XTD ti may be an option. I ditched it within a few weeks because it flew higher than I liked, but at the time I was looking for a unicorn……. I now just go driver, mini driver, 18* 5W ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

What shaft and swing speed (with 2 hybrid) do you have? I used to have a 19 degree G425 and really liked to forgiveness, but ended up selling it since in search for lower loft and better distance.

Would love to be able to try one! But not to easy to find (Sweden), and could never stand the looks...

I play an Accra Hybrid shaft X-Stiff, that I was fitted in to. I haven't paid attention to my swing speed on the hybrid but I'm about 110-112 with driver currently so a decently quick player.

I have the Cobra Tec in 17*.  I like it quite a bit.  I haven't been able to get much of a read on just how good it is, because I got it at the end of last season.

I also have a Tour Edge CBX in 17*.  In my limited play with the Tec, the CBX hits the ball higher, if that's something that interests you.  You can buy one in 16*, I believe.

That said, the Tec is adjustable, you could turn it down to 15.5*.  For a 3w substitute situation, that has a lot of appeal.  I've thought about doing it myself, and pairing it with a slightly softer shaft profile for a bit more elevation (I'm getting older 😞).

"Like new" condition 157$ + postage to Sweden is little bit over 50$. Add VAT 25% and it's something like 265$. There's a good probability that it is brand new.

Yes, you would have to buy without testing, but buying one is possible.

I used a Callaway epic super hybrid 16* which i lofted down as far as it would go. It was pretty great. The head was hot and long and the ball flight was great. When i was playing these hybrids I didnt have any other woods in my bags other than Driver.

This is from last year, but in their comparison test, the TM Stealth Plus had the lowest spin of the dozen or so hybrids examined.  Likely, this'll be true for the Stealth2 line as well.

Something else to consider...

I wouldn't mind looking at a 2H or something like a Ping Crossover or Titleist/Srixon driving iron that's 17-ish.

Is that the one with the white TM esque crown? If so I just got one in 16° to try out, if it's really long then it probably won't fit my needs, so it'll go in the backup bag as I am very light on backups in the long clubs.

In regards to the OP, I don't have much newer stuff, but the tour edge exotics I have in the 4 and 5 are pretty good hybrids.

I’d recommend the Ping G430 as they are super easy to launch. The new STZ hybrid from Mizuno I supposedly much hotter than the old CLK line (search askgolfnut reviews on YT).

I’m holding off any hybrid decisions until I can test the new Mizuno line.

Well, I can tell you which ones to avoid like the plague. The 2012 Adams XTD ti super hybrid with the stock Mitsubishi shaft in them. In fact if you should just buy and ship any you find to me and I'll dispose of them. You know, for the good of mankind and such.

I haven't tried to Epic, but the Original Super Hybrid does that for me as well... It's a fairway finder with length, and easy to hit off the deck too

Given how utility irons have evolved, and shafts for hybrids and woods have evolved, don't know why a wood is so difficult to hit.  Three or five woods are not as long as Driver.

My T200 2i is 39.75" and 3 wd is 43".  The only 18' & 19' hybrids I've looked at are TSR2 & TSR3, each is 40.5"

You're not hitting a driver off the deck.  43" 3W IS THE most difficult club off the deck for anyone due to shear physics.

It’s not just the length, but the club head weight and that weight’s distribution/design that make each club more suitable for some players than others. It’s why everybody easily has a favorite or “go to” for that spot in their bag and some absolute “no go’s”.

It’s a long shot, usually off a tight tee or into a par 5, so expectations are high and slightly poor results turn into terrible scores quickly. If you aren’t confident or consistent with that club, it’s a bad start in those circumstances.

Also, I’ve always argued that a driver should be the easiest shot in the bag. When else do you get to pick the exact lie and location you desire, without any concerns of “obstacles” for the most part. Not to mention modern drivers being the size of a 5 gallon bucket. IMO, it’s not even remotely comparable to hitting a FW off the deck, much less consistently.

Anyway, to answer OP’s question… I still play the original Apex Hybrid from ‘19. Super underrated club. Great from the tee or fairway, long, traditional shape, and really consistent. I could probably find something newer, but it ain’t broke for me.

I have always been a long iron player, can not hit a fairway wood consistently. Finally found a beast of a hybrid last year that was a complete game changer, it is the Stealth Plus.

From tee or fairway it performs amazingly.

Its awesome to finally have something I can hit off a tee if the driver is not performing or just a tight hole.

Very intrested to hear your selection process for these, and how the clubs differ. Obviously they are different in loft. How come you did not go for 2 x G430 hybrid (17+22) or 2 x Mizuni ST-Z 230 (16+22)?

My Cleveland 3+ 18* Hywood is being delivered this weekend.  I'll let you know.  I can't hit a fairway wood off the deck for my life.  Probably mental at this point.  Heard and read really good things about the Hywood.  I have a Maltby 21* "HyWay" which is similar to the Cleveland Hywood that I really like and hit well but that is a 175-185 club for me.  They don't make that style in anything lower lofted so I bought the Cleveland Hywood at 18* for that 200-215 off the deck club.
