I think they’re lightening holes to move the COG up so shots come out lower, with a higher spin. 
 

seems like all the wedge designs are going with higher COG

Roger made some nice looking wedges at Cleveland.  The 588 TA is a classic.  I don't think he's made a wedge at Callaway that remotely resembles a Cleveland 588.  I personally hate the straight leading edge and onset look.  This one looks a little better shape wise.

I understand that they serve a purpose but every other major brand has found a way to do this without using these ports. I just think it's not a good look. My two pence.

At the first glance of these pictures, my first thought was the old Cleveland 588 60*. So I pulled out several that I have from Roger's day. There were a 2-3 variations of those for the tour mostly (frankly these were for most the basis of every other tour wedge makers/grinders for a long time. The Vokey's came about in the mid to late 90's based on these originally. Does anyone have or remember the "Titleist" wedges before?? I have some and the stock clubs were nothing into todays world. So comparing the look at this "Callaway" wedge (the weight "ports" are detailed to look like the Brand and not real)  is purely old Roger Cleveland of Cleveland days. Great looking club with similar heel grind that was in advance of others. Face very similar to almost identical. The sole is a touch wider, but he had a version with that also. The only visible difference I can tell is this has a slightly straighter leading edge. But I have one from the old Cleveland company with more ground square leading edge also. Anyway, very nice, this has made me pull out a couple of dozen old "Rogers" out of my "library"!

I was playing Callaway X Forged up until last year but the groove rule finally kicked in, and now Callaway doesn’t make forged wedges anymore.  I blind bought the forged Wilsons, but the shape was way off. I didn’t mesh with the Mizuno…

 

Roger Cleveland designs are great. Would love to play Callaway forged again.

I have a set of X forged in pristine condition and they are still great wedges, but I don't play them very much as I want them to stay in the condition they are.

I've had pretty much all of the "Mack Daddy" iterations. Of the early ones, I preferred the MD2 Tour grind as the leading edge was straighter which I prefer. 

After that I think the MD5 Jaws was a great wedge, especially the raw version. Currently, I have the new MD Raw in 54* in two different grinds and a Jaws Full Toe in 58*

Had a PM Grind and loved the performance out of bunkers, not so much everywhere else. Plus, just could not look down at them. Therefore, trying the Full Toe.  I know lots of people don't like the port holes. I don't mind them, but if they went away that would be just fine. Forged is always a good thing. This Proto looks pretty good! Just my 2 cents.

Callaway made the jaws forged in 2021/2. Can still be found.

Roger’s Mack Daddy 2 still best Callaway ever, and I’m still playing them.

Oh wow! I didn’t know that,  looks like they made a raw-ish slate version too. Man I’d love to try one, looks like the nice ones are all coming from Japan now.
