David Lingmerth and G430 irons

Saw a video Ping was fitting him for a set of G430 irons.

 

Anyone know if he was using them in the tournament ?

Looking at his profile on ping.com he does have a strange collection of clubs for a pro if what's listed is accurate, his lowest lofted iron is a 6-iron (G430) and he uses mostly i230 irons (6-PW). I'm guessing he uses the G430 6-iron as a 5-iron gap, then he has a couple of hybrids to fill in for longer irons.

What he said….. The loft on a g430 6 iron is 25* which gaps well with his i230 6 iron that is 29*. He’s always played more of a blended set for most of his career since he has always been a lower trajectory player.

He’s the mark crossfield of the tour. 
mark played 2 6i for a while. Halo and then the srixon

Yeah its really a clever way to set up your bag honestly.  I'm trying to do something similar but hated the G425 5i I got that was powerspec to basically go 3h - 5i - 6i so I can have an extra wedge in the bag. 

 

I know Rickie had done that for a long time, essentially his driving iron/longest iron was a GI of whatever Cobra was putting out that year.

I believe Colin Montgomerie was playing them on the Senior Circuit.  Not really what you were referring to, but he's still a heck of a golfer.

KJ Choi played G15 and G20 irons. 
 

There are guys/gals that play them (there’s a big hitter on the LPGA who games G410, but I can’t remember her name). 
 

KJ is probably the biggest name for the game improvement category on a non senior tour though (in the day… as they say).

I do something similar. I bend my 6i 1* strong, drop the 5, add a wedge, and bag the 4 primarily as another off the tee option. I maintain nice gaps in the scoring clubs and expand the gaps between my distance clubs.

Kenny Perry and his original (non TP) R7 irons were pretty notable as well.

Jesper Parnevek played G20’s for a little while too. So not totally unheard of for a pro to use G series irons.

Billy Mayfair big G series iron guy.  Played forever on PGA Tour and still does on Senior tour I believe.

KJ played the G400s for a brief time also.
