Okay, my girlfriend and I started watching this last night. Turned it off about the time ppl had hot dogs for fingers (honestly surprised we made it that far). If I would have paid to see this at the theatre I woulda walked out. I’ve never done that before btw. Tonight it won best picture and quite a few other big awards. So did any of you see it and actually like it/enjoy it? It can’t be just us that thought, what the…??? 😜

I honestly haven't watched most of the "best picture" winners recently. There was that one recently where the woman fell in love with the fish man etc...

I'm sure these are well made and all that, but there seems to be a bigger gap now between movies that everyone likes watching and movies that the academy loves

Mid 90's to mid 2000's there were some really popular movies that won best picture. I feel like Braveheart would lose to a movie 8 people watched in 2023

@TiScape I'd say "give it a chance" ... but also that you're entitled to have your own opinion & not obligatory to like the movie!

IMHO it's a thought-provoking movie & inventive... albeit yes also more than a bit weird!

Yeah we couldn’t get into it.

But maybe circle back to it. We hated Game of Thrones first episode then stared again like a year later and ended up watching it religiously!

Do any of the alternate realities in that movie involve her shooting down SU-57s with Miles Teller? If so, i will give it a look

I remember listening to Howard Stern a day or two after the awards ripping this movie wondering how it won...ive never seen it just remember this for some reason.

I know a lot of people were big on the Whale and glad Fraser won for that, I will check that one out when I have time. Top Gun was very good just seems like the big blockbusters never win.

Its an original (by modern hollywood standards) artistic pseudo-intellectualista motion picture and meant to be the way you explain it. It's going to big time pander to all the critics and those type of people in the industry and those who orbit around being creative which is why its won so many awards. Your run of the mill movie watcher and or anyone with a major left-brain right-brain difference going on will just turn it off and say wtf is this.

Haha yup! Also was a little slow on the uptake w/GOT but then essentially binged it.
My GF found and recommended we watch this movie. As we were watching it I’d periodically look over at her with my eyebrows raised and she’d just laugh… When we had finally taken all we could, we went to ‘You’ on Netflix. Now that I recommend 👍🏼

There is an episode of ‘You’ where they take a lot of LSD… I was thinking that was probably how this movie was created and what one needs to be under the influence of to tolerate it, get it, enjoy it. All good, just not for me. I will say on a + note, the one writer (taller white guy) seems like a really cool and down to earth guy. I was able to see him give ~4/5 acceptance speeches 😊

I like arty intellectual movies. I enjoy thought provoking art in all forms that allows the mind to interpret, speculate , and conjure emotion.

I just can’t stand movies about interpersonal “relationships” that are all family dramatic and gushy.

Watched the review, thanks JJ. I like the concept a lot. And I definitely preferred this delivery method as apposed to the 2+ hour movie 😜 Cliffs Notes for the W! 😂

Unlikely Mel Gibson is getting many Oscar votes in 2023. Just saying. 😉

I am actually all for Hollywood awarding these kinds of movies. You want to push the art form forward and so much being put out is safe and just a replication of other successful movies. Most of could write the major plot points and stories of a movie these days.

True that. Makes me appreciate ‘the Daniels’ other movie where they use a farting corpse as a jet ski and Daniel Radcliffe’s erection as a compass to lead them to safety 🍆 🧭

Holy cow @TiScape that description you provided = is from a real movie! Thought it was “too crazy to be true”... so I googled it.

Quote

“In retrospect, "Swiss Army Man" even at its most absurd is far milder than Daniels' second film. Sure, there's a moment when castaway Hank Thompson (Paul Dano) uses Manny's (Daniel Radcliffe) post-mortem erection as a compass and an abundance of farts.”

I watched this a few weeks ago.  Absolutely loved it.  Have it saved on the DVR, I'll probably watch it again.

I admit I find the naysaying puzzling.  But, I suppose there are always the unenlightened who have yet to learn the Truth that is the Ram Tour Grind, so it makes a certain sense.  🤔 😉

My wife didn't care for it as much.  The sci-fi element is something that doesn't appeal to her.  That said, she loved the hot dog fingers scenes.

As did I.  Found it quite funny.  Especially the wrist brace being on the ankle.  LOL

Some aspects of the film were so over the top that it's definitely going to be a polarizing watch. I can see why some people just won't get into it, even for no other reason that the initial conflict--a threatening financial issue in the midst of family drama--has certainly been handled better in other films in terms of drawing the audience in/making them feel like they know the characters/want to invest in them. The fact that the characters don't stand out as immediately identifiable or relatable on the whole is part of what makes the entirety of the story more interesting in the end, but the intro isn't going to hook everyone who's not already game to stay to the end.

It's also a trippy movie to put it mildly and some people just don't enjoy that. It's, in fact, a very trippy movie, to the point of absurdity. That's part of what can make it a good watch for people whom it resonates with, but again, it's really not going to be a winner for people who want a more straightforward story or philosophical questions presented in a more tame way. It's honestly not an easy thing to think on some of what the film presents, and having those thoughts as a result of murder, martial arts fights & wrestling matches, flashes between realities, and an encounter with the end of existence itself makes it even more visceral.

There are aspects of the film that make it clear a core element of it is artistic expression. It succeeds there, because those who are interested enough to watch it through will takeaway at least most of what was being expressed. This is really no different than painting or music or any other form of art, though, and there are some people who just won't find it suits their taste. It's not a film for everyone any more than Creed or Interstellar or Little Women are.

Lastly, the film had multiple directors. That's going to make for quite the blend of presentation.

I can easily see why some people just won't like it, but that said, it really did deserve its nominations and wins. Whatever its absurdities, in spite of its deep dive into the philosophical, metaphysical, and scientific, it's a very coherent film, it's well directed, and it is superbly acted in all of the main and supporting roles.

It also nicely fits the requirements for good plot as explained by Trey Parker & Matt Stone:
