Ping G425: Low Handicapper Impulsive Buy

Bow Hunter

Recommended Posts

I currently play Mizuno MP4 blades which I love but there are times I want a tad more forgiveness. I am a 4 handicap and a decent ball striker.

I found an old Ping G2 7 iron at our club and was hitting it high and straight. It was stupid easy to hit.

Welp, I decided to buy a set of Ping G425s. They are a couple years old now so I can still buy new at a discounted rate and reviews seems positive.

Anyone gaming the 425s?

I've done that and you will hit em longer higher but with less spin.

I did not try the g425 I tried the g710. but believe your results will track in a similar way.

now Im back in Ie1 pings first version of the I series that look similar to the i200-210.  after a while with the g710 I found I liked more spin on my approach shots.  also fewer fliers over the back.

did see pics of the new blueprint blades and am in lust.

I think you might find yourself right at home in this thread!

I didn't play G425s but have demoed the G430 irons and was really impressed. They're incredibly easy to hit, want to go straight, and the biggest thing I noticed about them vs. other game improvement irons is that they spin. Not as much as a one-piece forged iron at a more traditional loft, of course -- but they spin enough that I could play them without worrying at all about stopping power.

We have a baby on the way, and while I love my i230s and find them very forgiving, every time I hit the G430 irons I find myself wondering if I should get a set of them or the G425s given the great prices you can find on them now and just play them next year, since I'll have a lot less time to practice and play than I have this year and might really like having something that's just point and shoot. (Then again, I'm a total gear junkie; there's a LOT of stuff I wonder if I should buy, and I probably shouldn't buy any of it ... but whatever, this is a hobby, I like messing with the equipment, it's fun.)

I played blades almost exclusively for 15 years and am currently playing a set of 620CBs, but I always run right to the G series anytime I want to make the game easier.  My obsession with them started a few years ago.  I took my wife and kids out for a twilight round and was hitting the ball all over the place.  My wife plays on old set of G5 irons and I grabbed her 8 iron and proceeded to knock down a pin from about 150.  I figured they would feel harsh - they didn't.  I figured they would be horrible to look at - they aren't.  I figured the wide sole would provide horrible turf interaction - they don't.  In fact, quite the opposite.  I am playing really well with my 620s at the moment, but I can almost guarantee that I will have another set of Gs in the bag at some point soon.  They are just really good.

I played the G425's for awhile since they came out but I actually liked the G410's a little better.  Not sure why but they just seemed to be easier to hit and more consistent.  Then I sold them to get the standard Paradym's and wish I didn't as I am not as consistent with them as I was with either Ping iron.

Similar situation - 0.6 hdcp and ordered a combo set of the g430’s and i230’s a few weeks ago.  I haven’t hit the g425’s but have it the previous g4XX series.   Stupid easy is the best way to describe them. I should get my new set any day now.

How did you gap the430s and 230s. I got a full set of 430s but was thinking of doing the same combo.

I've played the G425s and they're fantastic.  Former blade player who regularly shot under par.  I'm old now and not the ball striker I used to be.  The G425s hit very high and yes perhaps slightly less spin but because they hit high and they still have decent spin that you won't have any issues what so ever holding greens.   The G430s surprisingly are even better than the G425s albeit the lofts are about 1 club juiced.

I spoke with a couple of ping insiders.  Blending the G430’s and i230’s were a new challenge for them.  I ended up getting g430 5 iron through 8 iron. I then got the i230’s 8 iron through wedge power spec.  I think there is only a 2 deg difference in loft between the two 8 irons. However, with the construction difference / spin difference, they estimate approximate 10 yard difference between the two. I am just got to pretend that the G series are mislabeled by one club.

I played my ISI BeNi set all summer. Love ‘em and love the unreal consistency these deliver all be it short yargades with their older lofts. With the Alberta golf season coming to a rapid close here in about a month, I chucked in my very unplayed 425’s (5-U) just to say I gamed them a bit this year. With a softer ball, I rather enjoyed them. Too clickie with a firmer X ball but with something a bit softer, I was hitting high, straight irons all day. A full club longer than ISI but that’s to be expected due to lofts. Not as spinny as my BeNi set but they launch way higher so the steep landing angle negates the lower spin. I was sticking them next to my ball marks. Easily held a 180 yard 7i on a small par3 green on my home track. Nice. With the right ball, I’ll game these way more often. I play off a 6 and would (and will) bag these more often.
Zero issues with sole width, top line, or offset as I’ve been a Ping fan since Calc gamed Eye2’s. They just work. Recommended.

425s are great clubs but frankly they sound and feel like are not that great. I think this will be the biggest thing for you unless it is unimportant. As a 4 though I suspect you can appreciate a nice feeling club. 425s are great clubs but in the end, I just couldn't get past the feel and sound. Went to the Mizuno JPX and got the same performance but with way better feel.

Arrrrrrgh. I've been threatening to get some 425 irons for a while now. I just don't play enough to hit my Apex the way I used to.

This thread isn't helping my urge. Most of the sets for sale in my area have senior shafts though, which tells me all I need to know 😄 I can't find a set with X flex shafts lol

G UNIT!

I’m an ISI BeNi fan boy so no matter how the bag looks from day to day, a BeNi (or 2) will remain. G Unit this fall is happening though😂😂
