VAS Irons

Immediately what I thought of. Cory Pavin 95 us open if I remember correctly. The only reason I know this is because I had a set of the VAS irons.

Nah... let's go back down the Greg Norman equipment rabbit hole and take it back to 1986.... the year Norman lead all 4 majors on Sunday and only won 1 of them.  Jack got him at the Masters and the US Open had a bunch of guys chasing him and Floyd got him.  He finally won his first major at the Open Championship but an equipment nightmare got him at the PGA.  After some rain that softened the course, Norman's infamous Spalding Tour Edition ball kept spinning off of the greens and in the end Bob Tway got him by holing out with the arguably the greatest sand club of all time.... the Ping Eye 2 sand wedge.  Fast forward to 9:45 and they're going to 18 all tied.  Enjoy!

Any idea on his woods, putter, etc. Seems he was playing Strata Balls? but not really a whole lot out there. I did read he burried his putter in a time capsule on some ranch.

I don’t remember his woods but he was most notably known for playing Maxfli Australian Blades.

How do I know? I used to occasionally clean his clubs when I worked as a bag room guy at a local club.

Greg Norman, whom I cannot tolerate, was aptly named the “Shark” because he was an apex predator of a golfer - except in the majors. In those events, he was a choke artist.
But he had prodigious talent. He was one of the all time greatest drivers of the ball

He lost the US Open to the light hitting  but dogged Corey Pavin. Pavin played the ridiculous looking VAS irons during that event although that US Open is most remembered for Pavin’s approx. 227 yard (VAS) 4 wood to around 5 feet with the championship on the line.

Greg Norman might have been a great driver of the ball, but in the final round of the 1981 Masters, playing in the final group with Tom Watson, Greg hit it dead left on the 10th hole.  By-by a chance at the green jacket.  (I was there.)

Hah!   28 wins worldwide including 16 PGAT wins and a US Open.  And a 26 for nine holes on the PGAT.  Pretty good for “slapping it all over”

^This.

It takes talent to make that little over the top move work.  Just ask Bobby Jones, Sam Snead, Ben Hogan, Craig Stadler, Matt Fitzpatrick, Victor Hovland... should I continue?

Yep, choker. Star crossed and unlucky as well; karma?

Did you have a 4 wood too?

I did not, but now I kinda want one. A new challenge for the BISC has entered the fray.

The Great White Fish Finger was how Jack Newton (RIP) put it.

To partially answer the question posed by the OP (these are older irons, btw).

1958/59 Wilson Dyna-Powered irons
1958 Masters - The King
1963 US Open - Julius Boros
1968 PGA Championship - Julius Boros [before Phil in 2021, JB the oldest mens major winner @ 48 years, 4 months & 18 days]

1960/61 Wilson Dyna-Powered irons

1960 Masters - The King

1960 US Open - The King

1962 Open Championship - The King

^^ You can read about Arnie's 1960 irons here:

https://www.golfwrx.com/705183/the-incredible-story-behind-arnold-palmers-275000-irons-from-the-1960s/

MacGregor Pro-81 Forging

1980 US Open - Jack

1980 PGA Championship -Jack

1981 US Open - David Graham [the famous final round @ Merion]

1986 Masters - Jack [30 on the back 9 on Sunday to win, a feat not repeated until Cameron Smith did it in 2022]

^^ These forgings were first sold to the public in the USA as the "Jack Nicklaus Limited Edition" and later after Jack won his 20th major [including 2 US Amateurs] the "Muirfield 20th"

MacGregor Pro-82 Forging

1988 US Open - Curtis Strange

1989 US Open - Curtis Strange

^^ Sold in the USA as the original "Muirfield" irons, and also as "VIP"

A word of caution to anyone thinking they will go shopping for some classic Macs on eBay.  MacGregor Japan often used the same forgings as MacGregor USA but rarely (if ever) the same stampings on the forgings.

And there is this --
The irons that won the Open

Except it has mistakes, as noted by Faldo himself.

Norman did lose to Corey Pavin in the 1995 US Open at Shinnecock. Norman while he did lose to Ray Floyd at Shinnecock in 1986 as did everybody else (Norman finished T12) he didn't finish in 2nd place as he did to Pavin in 1995. FWIW.

..few weeks ago the PING Tour Van happened to be in town at the PING Proving Grounds. Handled that exact PLD (his personal back-up they like to keep on the van).
