Golfers you love to root against

Monty and Howard Clark. Saw a fair bit of tournaments starting golf early 80’s as a late teenager. Those two were so unpolite to the patrons. And the golf journalists from the time agreed. Have no notion of US players until say 1990, US golf wasnt televised where I live.

Everyone loved Seve here, but I did not really like him. Cannot say why really.

Tom Watson and Tom Kite. Same here, they just had an aura I did not really like. And the worst bully at my school had the unusual first name Tom, took until the 2000’s till that went away.

Young Phil Mickelson. Had the aura of a rich brat, didnt like him until he jumped on AN hole 18.  And he’s leftiness, other lefties don’t look that backwards. Well he probably paved the way for others…

Annika, never liked her swing, great person though.

Tiger, too good, made golf tournaments boring.

Toms, extremely bad aura.

Stenson, never liked his swing.

Bubba, peculiar fellow with a peculiar swing.

young Rory, that hair and the mouth always open. Wanted to stuff a lollipop in his mouth. Now his rate is dramatically improved.

Webb simpson, worst looking swing ever, and well bad aura.

Spieth, great temperament but unattractive swing and irritating aparrel.

Hovland, swing, nationality and used car salesman smile. He’s ok when a bit pissed.

Van Rooyen and JT, because.

i’ve always liked the bad boys somewhat. But ok, when Spieth beat Reed in the playoff at Innisbrook, that shut him up well.

I can’t believe it hasn’t been said yet, and maybe that speaks to his waning relevance, but…Sergio.

I can't believe I missed this. Christmas hangover's to blame.

Sergio goes without saying. As I suspect it did for many others.

was turned off by Fitzpatrick during full swing , if he wasn't golfing he was glued to his phone like my dimwitted nephew.  I like his brother better.

Historically yes, followed him playing half a round on course on one of his first victories. Peculiar little fellow, walked with long strides, looking constantly down. Had a kinda eerie aura. But I think he’s been lightening up. Probably born kinda shy. His brother, yep just radiates chumminess. Hard to see they’re brothers.

I'll second that nomination for Eric Van Rooyen, and anyone else wearing those high water ankle hugging pants or a man bun.

Jordan Spieth used to be on my list, but I've changed my mind on him. I've grown to appreciate the spastic nature of his game, I can relate.

I do agree on Justin Thomas, he's got a bit of that weasel factor working against him.

P Reed

Shark
Billy Ho

There are a few others I don't like, but I still find at least something interesting about them like Cantlay or Bryson, and if given the opportunity I would tee it up with or have a beer with. The 3 above, I wouldn't tee it up with if given a free weekend at Augusta National............

I'll throw HV3 in there. Used to think he was ok, then he went to LIV and now this. Pretty pathetic.

It's pretty sad in general how bad the drinking gets at the course despite people knowing they'll be behind the wheel well before they can sober up. No idea of the situation above, but brought to mind how much buzzed and drunk driving goes on right after rounds.

On topic, I really don't root against anyone. I have golfers I'm not a fan of and don't pay attention to, but the only golfer I actually dislike hasn't been in the spotlight for years so I don't have to give him a second thought 99.9% of the year. He was mentioned here in the thread, so I'm not the only one.

Patrick Reed. Truly loathsome. Maybe the best thing LIV has done and will ever do was vacuuming him up to deposit in their golf purgatory menagerie. Maybe it's not forever but it was a true service to the professional golfing world.

It's not really that I hate Jordan Spieth personally, certainly not like Reed, but the announcers slobbering all over him for years after it became super clear he devolved into a worse player was extremely off-putting.

Im not out to kick HV3 when he's down and admire he came from nothing, but drinking is driving is wrong and he needs to set a better example. Its not okay because a lot of people do it...

Sergio, Poulter, now Mickelson, and of course Reed.

Though the entertainment value of Reed's attorney is gold! 😂🤣😂

Reed is pure entertainment. His match VS RORY at the DC is one of the greatest things seen in golf - better then all the other boring robots out there.
