LAB DF3 Order is in!

First official round with the DF3 went well. I knew there was going to be some adjustment period but I actually putted better than I have in a while. I didn't do much else well but I had a few solid par saves and dropped a couple of 10-15 footers (which has rarely been part of my game.) Also it was a course I've never played with some pretty funky greens. I'd call the maiden flight a success (now if it could somehow help me hit a few more GIR, we'd really be cooking.)

Guys, I have some bad news. My after playing and practicing a few weekends with my counter balanced DF3 it just isn’t for me. Everything feels great about it, balanced well, looks killer, but I just don’t feel comfortable with it and my putting has suffered. I really wanted to love her, I actually love everything about it, but I can’t make putts. I am gonna put her up for sale. 🙁

Bummer, but there's a line for these!  It'll go.

Not sure if I should post in this thread or one of the others… I received my second hander from a fellow WRXer today and I am very pleased so far. I was honestly a little worried the DF3 might not be for me.

I have been able to try out the DF2.1 and Mezz on 3 occasions, but not the DF3. I didn’t like the brooms at all and those were what I was planning to buy blind. I liked the regular Mezz and Max ok the first time and hated them the next time (pushing everything). The DF2.1 was just too big for me. I didn’t feel like I could line it up very well either. Since then, I have read a lot about keeping the ball more forward, and it works!

Fast forward to a friendly WRXer that had an extra. It fit everything I wanted, upright lie, 3 line alignment, red was ok, Accra shaft, heavy head, and textured grip. It arrived today in like new condition.

I am not a great putter and have been working on an underneath type grip to keep my hands out of it and have also been trying left hand low on my current putter. Both have worked great this year. I don’t feel like I have to do much of any of that with this putter. I wasn’t sure about shaft lean with the other putters in the store, but something seems to fit better with this putter. I have putted this LAB over 100 indoor puts with a regular grip and left hand low as well and I’m not sure which way I’ll go yet. I think I am going to try to stick with left hand low, and I think the shaft lean is working very well for that.

I have heard lots of comments about how soft the putter feels with the Accra. I don’t think this is a massive difference from my Spider Tour, but I can feel a bit of difference and a slightly more muted tone with the LAB. I do like it. I have been testing different balls this week (softer vs harder - Chrome Soft vs X LS, ERC Soft, Prov1x, Bridgestone RXS, etc) and the differences are very noticeable across every putter.

Forgiveness has been hard to tell so far on just 7ft indoor putts. I look forward to getting out to some greens to see how I like it out there.

I have the heavy head, but I’m not sure how that compares to a normal head. I feel like my Spider is a little heavy and I like heavy, so it feels nice.

I love the size. Not a lot bigger than my current putter or my old Sabertooth I handed down to my son years ago. MUCH more appealing than the DF2.1. I thought it would be a little nicer to look at, but it is much nicer to look at than I expected. I would say it is smaller than I expected, and that is a good thing.

Overall, I love it so far! I try not to buy clubs (especially putters) blind, but It really fits me so far and fits me better than either of the other LAB models. I’m sure the upright lie is helping. (It now feels weird to look down at the Spider after only a couple hours of testing).

Here are some size comparison pics with the putters my son and I use.

They don’t let you NOT aim at the right spot. They are what I wanted and really help you get the ball centered and aim. Coming from a putter without lines and thinking would probably prefer to have lines, I am digging the change.

I am a recent convert to the benefits of LAB putters. Will be putting the DF3, that arrived earlier today, up against the Mezz Max (broomstick) to see what will be my putter of 2024.

Battle commences tomorrow morning on the practice putting green before heading in to work.

just finished up now. The clear winner for me was the DF3 (standard length).

Everything felt automatic, this could be down to the fact I have only tried the broomstick for just over a month or so.

The DF3 goes straight into the bag.

I will go down the full customisation route further down the line but this was purchased off the shelf at 34” and 69’ lie angle.

Oh boy, that's a long time.  They need to fix that.  I just ordered this past weekend and wonder if I'll be able to use the club this season, lol.

6 weeks lead time. I cancelled my order. I’m a solid putter and wanted to try one, but no shot in waiting that long unless it’s a true custom putter. Hopefully down the road they hire more staff to keep up with demand.

Rolled the DF3 today and I have to hand it to LAB Golf. They have taken the previous model and made it way smaller and more nimble without losing a thing in terms of stability. It is much improved.

I briefly owned the MEZZ1 and did not get on with it or the Accra shaft but the DF3 has a much more comfortable feel. I was using one with the pistol grip. Could be a factor as I like it a lot more than the original grips they used. I also prefer the steel shaft. Putter puts a very smooth, immediate roll on the ball.

Have you been able to try a non-counterbalanced one too?

I might not be liked for this, but if your hands are steady, chances are you don't need CB. The longer and (overall) heavier putter doesn't help everyone, so trying a non-CB version might actually help you. 🙂

In other news: I'll be picking mine (no CB) up tonight 🙂

Had very interesting testing experience with some lab putters today...

Never rolled one and here in Montreal Canada they are impossible to see in person.

Found one clubfitter who had 1 demo each of the Link, DF3 and Mezz.1Max.

Only the Link was at my needed 33 inches.

At first was pretty disappointed. Didn't find them as stable as I would have thought (DF3 and Mezz 1 max)

Was missing everything right

Had choked down to comfortable length played with ball position... Eventually was better but ironically found the Link was working best.

I think the onset causes alignment issues particularly with the Mezz. DF3 with T alignment was better.

Had fitter weigh the putters and discovered:

Link at 33 inches weighed 565 grams

DF3 was less than 540( 535 about) at 35 inches

Mezz was 550 at 34 inches.

He added 10 grams of lead tape and DF3 was better.

Still putted best with the link.

I know there is a heavy option for DF3. I am wondering if they weight the putter differently based on shaft length as well or keep it same.

Finally got some more info:
"Per lab support, DF 3 target head weight ranges are as follows:
Standard: 350g-360g
Heavier: 360g-370g
Lighter: 340g-350g"

I was putting with a standard in 35", which is 2" longer than I putt with, and choked down a couple inches it did feel pretty light in the swing, but I could personally feel the putter head moving. I'm just going to make a note with my current putter specs and let them do their thing.

Did they say if they vary the weight based on shaft type or length?

Ok.. my custom DF3 came today which has the accra shaft.   It also has the heavier head and is 0.5" longer and is 1 more degree upright than the stock steel shafted DF3 I compared it against.

So.. between the steel shaft and the accra shaft, there isn't much of a difference imo with my limited testing.   The biggest difference was that the head could be felt more with the Accra vs. the steel shaft.   You might point out (correctly) the accra shafted version has the heavier head, so that might account for at least part of it but I'm not sure it accounts for all of it.    In respect to putting feel,  The accra might be "softer" compared to the other graphite shaft options, but not so much vs. the steel shaft.   The feedback is a little better in the Accra, but I had to mis-hit quite a bit off the toe or heel to find out.

This testing was only done for an hour in my indoor sim putting surface, with a longest possible putt of 11'.    Both versions are spectacular.    Would I order the Accra again?  I'm not sure...it is a nice shaft but I think I would stay with the steel or roll the dice on the TPT.   I prolly would want to hunt a TPT down first to see for myself though.

Can you tell me the specs of each? I tried a stock demo DF3 it was steel shaft 35 inches 69 lie. I need same lie at 33 inches. Choked down the putter felt insanely light for its size and confirmed it was 25 grams lighter than the 33 inch link stock demo with same shaft.

I am debating Accra. I think if I fit into stock I would go steel but for some reason DF3 they Eliminated the 33 inch stock that is available in the other models. So once I have to go custom will go blue and maybe heavier? Question is if The white Accra shaft is worth it

The Accra shaft vs the Steel to me I preferred the steel. But since getting my TPT shaft it’s been a game changer.
