Help… Need Recomendations, I Hate modern drivers

For the longest time I really can’t get comfort with modern drivers…If I had to portion the issue out I would say it is 35% mental and 65% feel. I always feel the head is lagging and I can’t feel it in space.

My favorite all time drivers are R510TP and J33R.

Should I go back to one of these and stay happy I am keeping the ball in play 90% of the time but loosing out on distance or does anyone have ideas of a more modern head.

This is a fitting issue.  Something is off, relative to your "feel needs", in terms of weight, swingweight, or shaft flex feel.  It has nothing to due to the age of the club, other than maybe, you prefer the feel of older shafts.

Exactly what I was going to quote and say. "Modern" drivers are longer, lighter, and bigger, ergo to recapture the feel of older drivers you need to start with shortening them and increasing headweight.

Also @ava08, check out the current crop of "Mini" drivers in things like the Taylormade BRNR if you also want similar head sizes. Adjustable weights for the aforementioned tweaking if necessary, familiar size, lots of loft options, and newer tech for performance.

You’re a head case…sorry. 🤷🏻‍♂️

The answer is in the last sentence of your first paragraph.  It’s a shaft issue.  Modern heads really are that much better, but without the right shaft you might as well be hitting persimmon.

Maybe demo the Titleist TSR4 - and have your driver made up to 44-1/2" total length.

I'm intending to try out the TSR2 and 4 with Titelist in Bangkok... and compare it to my current driver(s) which are not that 'modern' , lol the 9015d heads may be old but the shafts are new and lovely 😉

You’re not losing anything playing older drivers from the center of the face. It’s the mishits where the newer drivers are better. The modern driver are just so much better at retaining ball speed and controlling spin on mishits.

@Nessism and @Valtiel gave some great advice.

Took me a while to figure out driver as well.  As soon as I started playing my woods shorter it changed everything for me.  Driver, fairway and utility iron are all cut short with added head weight.  You might have different needs, but it would be worth a fitting session to figure it out.

Last spring I picked up a Srixon Z745 for $30, and grabbed a new Attas 11 for $100. Best season of driving since I sold my VR Pro LE. And I hit it just as far as my playing partners Paradym, G430, and TSR3.

Maybe the 2016 Taylormade M2? It’s a GOAT. Or the Ping G400 (not Max) which is 445cc I think.

I’ve had a M2 for a couple of years. Found a shaft I like (senior flex). Slowed my tempo down a little and my driving is better than ever. Distance has also improved. Golf is way more fun when there is no stress with the driver.
