Rory has referenced it many times in particular in relation to an in depth conversation he had with Thomas Bjorn about wedge play. Rory's biggest asset with the driver, his explosive speed thru the ball, is his biggest weakness with the wedge.

I get that but other high speed players have successfully managed their wedge game.  DJ, JT and of course Tiger.  Maybe they use different wedge techniques vs normal full swing?  You occasionally see Rory hit cut-off wedge shots but maybe he is just not comfortable with that yet?

Regardless I hope he pulls things together and has a great year with at least one major!

Skinn's best approach to to today is going to be just relax and celebrate the last group accomplishment. The killer save on 18 yesterday bought him that. Put away thoughts of winning and know that if you don't crap the bed and just shoot anything near par, you're going home with a really nice chuck of change. That's already in the bag. The only disappointment would be tossing up a 78 or something and throwing it all away.

.....and it'll also be the best attitude for him to actually win.

Such a good post!! Just play his best with NO expectations. Play smart, minimize mistakes, and just hang around until the end and maybe have a chance at the W.

Great post and perfect analysis!

When his swing is on and timing is perfect no one can touch him and, for me, he is the most watchable golfer since prime Tiger.  On the other hand he seems to struggle to manage his  "B" or "C" game and still win at the highest level like say Tiger did.  Yes he does that on the DP Tour but I cannot remember in recent years him grinding  a Faldo-like mistake free 70 to win a PGA Tour event.  There is always a costly big miss in there somewhere.  Maybe that's part of the "edge of the seat" viewing experience with him!

You are also bang on with the course management approach and the caddy comments.  I'd love to see him sit Harry for the majors and get Stevie Williams on the bag - especially Augusta.

Doesn't matter who's on the bag if he's not going to accept their input. Lots of criticism of his continued use of Harry to loop for him over the years including by me, but one thing that someone pointed out when many were discussing it is the fact that he doesn't bring Harry in to read anything the way other players do. Now maybe he's clueless so Rory has reason not to trust him, though after all these years the more likely thing is that he simply wants to do it on his own and won't allow the input. There have been many, many occasions where his read is off just enough to cost him and none of them come after the discussion most others have with their caddies before those kinds of strokes.

No one's saving him from that. Remember Rahm's blow up when he wouldn't hear his man out? Nothing doing if the captain won't listen to his number two about backing off of shots either, and it doesn't look like Rory even lets Harry bring up the subject of whether or not he should go for something. He's dead in the water in his worst full swing moments as well when there's literally no discussion to be had no matter how big the danger.

He certainly has trouble dialing it back. It's really telling seeing him side-by-side with someone like Knapp who also booms it off the tee but then dials it back on the short irons when he needs to. Same thing watching Tiger when he needs to be accurate and take advantage of a good drive or layup. It's but that he has explosive speed, it's that he only has explosive speed.

Rory's trouble gearing down for wedges is never going to become an asset to his game.

The Rory caddie thing to me is interesting as we really have no idea if someone else would help him. Maybe having a buddy on the bag relaxes him and is what he needs to play best?

-Bones went with JT and last year was JT's worst ever year on tour

-Tessori with Cam Young lasted less than a full season

-Scheffler keeps putting like he is and continues to throw putters and we might need to pray for Ted Scott again

Thing is the caddie can help with strategy and get the player in a good mindset but execution is what wins you tournaments. I feel like Rory’s a more complete player then he was in 2012-14. He should’ve won at St Andrews and LACC but both Sunday’s he was stuck in neutral. Once he gets that 5th major he’ll win a couple more in quick succession

When the delay happened I switched over to the PBA tour’s Delaware Classic. Semi-final game went to a roll-off and David ‘Booger’  Krol ended up winning it all in his first TV final appearance!

🎳 🙌🏼

I really hope that the PGA Tour guys start to go with logos like this on their shirts .... 🙂

Even the idea of there being a time of year when it doesn’t usually rain is alien to me 😄

Rory always looks better when he is hitting those cutoff shots, even the announcers started harping on it during the Desert swings tournaments. DJ has always had a very stable clubface via his extremely limited clubface rotation throughout the swing, he just needed to shallow out and learn to control his distance better to improve in that area. JT's explosiveness was always a lower body centered thing that IMO seems far easier to turn up/turn down when needed. JT also has a more stable clubface rotationally speaking and a fairly neutral delivery. Tiger is Tiger, he had/has a little bit of everything. Rory simply has more moving parts. More clubface rotation, faster/flippier hands, and an ingrained delivery that isn't as neutral. With his speed it's just more to manage than the other guys and it explains IMO why he still struggles with it.
