The Players Championship 2024 (*** NO LIV DISCUSSIONS ***)

I get it, but no, he had nowhere near what he got from LIV.  Generational wealth is when you can put it somewhere at 4% with zero risk and still not be able to spend the interest every year despite mansions and a jet.

4% of 500mil yearly is $20,000,000 a year to live off of without ever touching the principle.  So in 20 years of doing that, you've spent 400,000,000 and never touched the half billion principle.

Generational wealth is having enough money that you can live comfortably and have enough cash/assets to pass on to future generations to allow them to live comfortably.  Again, different strokes for different strokes.  20M a year to live off is hilarious BTW.  Of course he got more money to leave, or he wouldn't have left, but everything has a cost...

Well, he did lose his moral principles. 🤣

I'm sure his kids will be happy and well adjusted for the harsh realities of life too lol.  But whatever.  Like I've said a million times, no one is upset with the decision, it's how the decision was made.

I had $50 on Harman at 60 to 1. Man was I hoping for him to make one of those last two putts or for Scottie to make a mistake coming in -- even though I'm a big Scottie fan.

My guy, you're just flat out wrong about the parity. Statistically the fields are much tighter now than they were in Jack's era, and tighter at current than they were in the early 2000s. It doesn't matter if you don't feel that the field puts up a better challenge than they used to, the numbers say they do, it's that simple.

Besides making things like that clear, the age of data has also changed what players know. The air surrounding Tiger was that he made everything, got up and down from everywhere, and took every course apart. As the data actually emerged we learned that his biggest strength--as some commentators pointed out on occasion but didn't have a full grasp of at the time--was is Par 5 scoring. Some of Tiger's strongest wins were at courses where he was actually over par on average for the 3s and 4s but massively under par for the 5s. Now every player knows that and tries to take advantage of Par 5s, tries to drive 4s when they can, and knows to the pin placement when and when not to go after 3s. The data also bore out that Tiger's willingness to go long into trouble is often an advantage over laying back to leave a full shot in, and now all the guys in the field know that truth.

It doesn't matter that some of the guys might not be "tough enough" in comparison to whoever of yesteryear. They know their own games far better than those players did, know their tendencies & which holes/layouts help and hurt them, and know statistically what the best move is off of every single tee, and have equipment 100% fit to their swings & preferences. Tiger figured out before the data proved it that longer is better and that going for Par 5s in two often pays the biggest dividends. Tiger was brash enough to try what all the traditionalists rarely would; now everyone takes the Tiger route because it's known to be the magic bullet. Longer is better, closer to the green is better even from the rough, and when everyone in the field who is able to plays that way, it's harder to escape the pack.

I agree with most of what you said...except the part about driving the ball long and crooked. Tiger has actually been quite the opposite, very conservative off many tees, leaving himself long approaches after a 2 iron into the middle of the fairway. He could get away with it though because his iron play was second to none. That plays into what you said, just walk away with par and move on making the birdies somewhere else.

That is not to say he couldn't play aggressively. He had many impressive Sunday rounds at the Masters to sneak into the top 5 or so. I remember one round way back I think 2005 Buick Open. He was batting Vijay Singh who was by far his strongest competition and had a poor second round. He went for everything on Saturday and shot a 61 to vault himself back in contention. That was the round in which he made back to back eagles. I can't believe it's not somewhere on video. He ended up losing to Vijay on Sunday all the same.

My guys are Scottie is #1, Spieth, JT, Fowler and Simpson are on my list too.  Hard to believe JT missed the cut.

Improves lies, ALL THE TIME and in various ways.  Caddie lines up his putts, not against the letter of the law, definitely circumventing the intent of the law.  Doesn't call penalties when ball moves after smashing the ground behind the ball in the rough.  Tamps down his lines on the green to the point he's seemingly creating a channel the ball can't escape.  I don' know, I'm sure there's more.  He just rubs me the wrong way.  Clone of Patrick Reed's playing style.

No.  I'm pointing out what just 4% return yearly on 500 mil is.  It's a freaking lot.

Add up all the golf I've watched since last fall and it doesn't total the time I spent parked watching it yesterday and it was worth it!

I had it up on Hulu on my phone while I was actually out playing!

Like I said earlier in the thread, I've never been so not-annoyed play was slow.

Yeah, that's if he doesn't leave the tour after being offered a Billion dollars by the competing tour. Look for that if he wins a major this year.🙂

"If anyone can handle that along with the pressures of competitive golf, I believe Scottie can do it.  He just seems so grounded and keeps everything in perspective.  I hope it lasts.  Like I said, we really need more role models like him."

We must control our excitement and not get too giddy🤣 over Scheffler's escapades.  Remember Rahm looking us in the eye and declaring that 54 hole team golf was not for him only to change his mind after a 1/2 Billion dollar offer.

Aside from the talent. Why Scottie is the man.

I don't think he'd leave the PGAT if he was offered a Billion $'s.

He has that much integrity. His morals cannot be bought.

Clark’s caddy addressing the ball with the wedge and lining him up was weird. Reminds me of LPGA caddies aligning players up from behind and then scurrying out of the way right before they swing. I don’t know if it’s cheating (I tend to think it’s borderline) but at the very least, it’s aesthetically displeasing. Can you imagine if Steve Williams did that to TW’s ball on the famous chip-in on #16 at Augusta? Clark just seems a little unlikable to me, can’t put my finger on it. I did want him to make that last putt though, would have loved to see Scottie rip his heart out in a playoff!

Tiger also could not find fairways with driver off the tee for long stretches of his career.  3 metal and 2 iron helped him at times, but scheffler is orders of magnitudes more consistent off the tee than woods.

Imo that is why Scottie seems “boring”. What made Tiger exciting, at least in my opinion, were the hero shots after a wayward tee shot. Scottie doesn’t make those shots because he’s always in the fairway and he doesn’t have to. If Scottie had to hit amazing shots opposite handed out of the trees off of a root while fading it around the bend and landing it softly on the green after shanking it into the woods off the tee people would think he’s just as exciting.

All these comparisons between Tiger n Scottie!
Tiger had what, ~8 majors before his 28th bday. Scottie has 1. I mean…

no one has compared him to tiger ...

Also safe to say “the best since Tiger”, still isn’t close to Tiger.

There have been a few with hot streaks over the years.  Jordan comes to mind.  I can recall a press conference where they hinted that he was the new Tiger.  He told them to stop with the crazy talk,  iirc he said if I keep it up for 10 years maybe we can have that discussion but right now I'm on hot streak.  Paraphrasing that.
