The Players Championship 2024 (*** NO LIV DISCUSSIONS ***)

The PGA Tour’s flagship event returns this week for its 50th staging and it’s fair to say that the championship and course have seen their fair share of drama over the years. The hottest player in the world heading in is last week and last year’s winner Scottie Scheffler. If his performance last week was a marker it was an incredibly impressive marker to lay down. The stout field will surely head in to the week with the notion that if they can beat Scottie they will be well placed to take the trophy and $4.5 million cheque home with them. To do that they will also need to take down what is typically a fierce test with the opportunity of disaster always lurking towards the end with the 17th and 18th being do or die holes particularly off the tee. As well as the display on the course, there are liekly to be fireworks on Wednesday when Tour commissioner Jay Monihan takes to the media tent.

Might as well call this another "Signature" event.......50th anniversary and missing a list of great players......sucks the others from that "3-day tournament" tour will not be playing

Sawgrass is all about the course - and fun competitive golf.

 

I really don't care who's in the field , or who is not. 

 

Some worthy golfer, having shot the lowest combined score over four days, will win the tournament.

 

In the process, lots of interesting golf related things will happen.

 

It could be that one random guy has the coolest round ever on Friday.

 

I'll watch that sucker on YouTube for years.

 

How many times do you think I replay the trophy ceremony?

I'd say Harrington after perusing the results.  And,  man,  I haven't done that that in a while.  It's like a time machine.  Had completely forgotten some of those guys.

Looking forward to a great week. The weather (so far) looks good - a few passing t-storms Friday, but mostly clear. That course brings out the best (or worst) in people. Always good for drama.

 

And the field is always strong. (Personally, I don't even remotely miss the guys that went to the YouTube Exhibition Tour - they're yesterday's news to me, and plenty of new talent is stepping in to replace them. Fine with them riding off into the sunset and playing with each other every couple weeks to music, in shorts. As it were. I'll keep watching actual professional tournament golf.)

 

Secretly, I would totally love to see Zalatoris finally hit his stride and surprise everyone. Have always liked that kid. Big injury setback last year, but I've always seen flashes of something great in him.

I’m low key more excited about Jay’s presser. Lot of unanswered questions about the future of the tour, the SSG deal and negations with the PIF. Also wouldn’t this technically be the 1st major??

Both love and hate the course. Enjoy the challenge, but on occasion it's yielded a few results from well executed shots that weren't very sporting with the excess shaving all the areas near the greens get. Certainly not quite in the old school vein that way. 

 

Look forward to seeing who can deal with the pressure, though. 17 is obscenely brutal, and 18 has eaten up a few dreams of better things as well. Scheffler is the man to beat if that putter holds out.
