Drawing a line on your ball

I don't know if i posted this in the correct spot or not?

I draw a line on my golf ball with a sharpie and it sears all the time. I've done it the night before, days, and weeks ahead of time and it still smears. Is there a better marker to use?

Milwaukee Inkzall has worked better for me.

I'll go back and forth between regular Sharpie, Milwaukee InkZall, Sharpie Pro, I just saw there is a Sharpie Pro Industrial.

Honestly if the conditions are right and you smack it on the line it will smear. I've had some last longer than others, some smear right away. I also think the ball cover itself really depends on the marker used and if it absorbs or just sits atop.

Like Matt said, sometimes the first iron or wedge shot hits the line and its smeared, sometimes you may go a few holes and never strike the ball on the line. Its gonna be random based on how the ball is laying when you walk up to it. My pal I play with just keeps a separate ball in his pocket exclusively for putting, so his line is never messed up.... but I know its illegal to mark your ball on the green, then putt out with a different ball so I never made it a habit of mine.

I've used all the different markers and they all suck, just the nature of writing on a smooth surface that doesn't really want it there.

I've also had the lines printed on from golfballs dot com but those were all crooked so they were completely useless.

I'd definitely love a better solution!

A good solution to this is to order from the manufacturer with a line printed on them. If you catch them running a free personalized sale like some are now it won’t even cost you anything extra and you’ll get the 4th dozen free.

The best I've found is an ear tag marker - like you'd find at Tractor Supply.  The ink is formulated to specifically mark plastics.  The marks will smear when hit - but they do not smear or fade as much as a Sharpie kind of pen.

Sharpie extreme is good but Marki are by far the best. Order you 3-4 of your favorite color and thank me later.

I will have to give the Marki a try! Thanks for the reccomendation. I wish you could get them printed from somewhere that would stay on like the pro's get! I will have to try manufacturer one of these days for that.

Check the Amazon reviews.

Funny you say that. I was just reading them. Think I'll save my 8 bucks.

I am going to try what @hammergolf suggested and see what the price is for the manufacturer to just print the line.

I have done it through golfballs.com before and I sent the product back because it was junk and the lines weren't straight!

Try the Y-Tex.  It's 8 bucks too but they really do work.  Designed to mark plastic ear tags for livestock that live in the elements.

Thats a great idea, I never thought of that one. Let me walk back to the back of my building where I am currently handling livestock and grab one of those bad boys!

Nice.

The y-tex takes a little longer to dry than a sharpie and will readily smear until dry.  Give it a bit.

Hated the smear and pretty much settled on playing Vice golf balls since it has the alignment line already printed. Some other golf balls have it too now.

This ball was marked with a Y-Tex marker and beat to death for about 6 rounds before it cracked.  In winter.

Shoot.

How did it crack in half?  Or is that just some swing speed miracle I don't have.  Do you do that often?

I have a very low swing speed - 90ish with the driver, down to the mid 70s with a wedge.  I have cracked one ball in my lifetime - it's the one in the picture I posted. That ball just refused to get lost - so I kept hitting it. I am guessing that it cracked because it was hit a bunch of times.  But I will admit - I have not put much thought into other potential explanations as I did not think this was an uncommon thing.

I usually ditch the ball before I get to that point, but have never had it happen.  Might just be a goal for next winter.

I don’t draw a line anymore but I used to and I don’t ever remember having issues with the line smearing. It would fade after a round or two but not smear. I just used a regular Sharpie and a ball line stencil thing and color in the line real good with like 10 passes back and forth. Let dry for 20min before use and no issue.

I use a Marki Pen I got in 2016. although I only mark dots for my ball, I stopped drawing the line and using the line to putts. the marker itself is fine. hasn't dried up in 8yrs.
