Probably hard to beat the local knowledge Bones has at pretty much every major tour stop. Bhatia really seemed to gel with the guy he had temping on the bag this week, though. They mentioned he used to coach a collegiate program previously but sounds like he's open to a full-time gig.

Pretty sure his caddie (Ryan) split with Justin Suh who he has been with for almost 3 years

I believe Ryan use to do some coaching at UCLA

Pretty unreal scenario for the guy, but that’s how caddie life is. You never know when your pockets will get $166,500 in them and you’ll be flying private to Augusta

edit

he was at Stanford in 2016-18 and was head coach at Florida Atlantic in 2018.

Matt Minter is his caddy for the week.

Matt Minter or Minister?

After an enviable stint with Patrick Cantlay, Matt Minister is once again in the headlines, courtesy of Justin Thomas. The 15-time PGA Tour winner has parted ways with Jim ‘Bones’ Mackay. Todd Lewis of Golf Channel reported that Minister might be the next man to stand by Thomas’s side when the two-time Major champion travels to Augusta National.

Minister has twenty years of caddying experience on both the Korn Ferry Tour and the PGA Tour. The veteran looper, once a collegiate player for the University of Ohio, was previously on the bag of Patrick Cantlay, Chris Kirk, Nick Price, Joe Durant, Chris Smith, and others. Not that his dream of becoming a pro was shattered, but he got more interested in looping after the serendipitous experience as a junior golfer.

Minister is correct. Google speech on my phone is horrible.

Agree with whoever on TGC said the caddie is always the easiest on the team to blame. All the more when your dad's your swing coach and you're afraid to sever those ties even though you started steep and have gotten so upright now you can't even manage it anymore.

Gotta suck to see your game going down in flames and have to pretend to chase fake problems instead of the real ones.

Funny! I'm no swing coach, I just play one on this site, but I thought the same thing earlier this week watching a live feed of them working on the range on GC...Since Butch is back in style, maybe he needs to jump on a jet and head out to Vegas so Rickie, Rors and him can take a group lesson....

Methinks he's past his prime like Speith. No longer top tear golfers, and Rors is trying really hard not to join them. Bones wasn't saving him from that finish...

I actually think Bones could have saved him from that finish. He has the experience to guide JT through what was going on. He has gotten to know him well enough to say the right things to help calm him down during the tough patch of holes, and probably had better insight in how to play the holes in that wind.

I can't believe people are saying Bones could have saved JT this week. Like y'all have seen their results together the majority of the last couple of years, right? Especially in the majors (save the one PGA).

As someone who bet on JT this week 😂 I do think bones could’ve gotten him calmed down. +7 in 4 holes is lack of trust in everything.

All 3 you named are headcases because they are involved with the politics of what is happening with the other tour, and how the structure moving forward is looking...JT doesn't like it, Spieth is listening, and Rory is being chased with the big $$ thrown at him.

I'm a big JT fan. Saw his tee shot on 12 in the second round, before the shot I thought - ok he is in this thing, maybe he will grab a few birdies and be lurking. Then I saw the tee shot on 12 - it was the most horrendous, uncommitted iron swing I have seen him make in a long time. It looked like semi thinned it to the right and just made the carry, finishing right of the green. I knew then that he might struggle on the way in with those winds. I didn't expect a missed cut mind!!! I wish he would watch some highlights from his wins in 2018/2019 to see where he may be going wrong!

Physically and age-wise, there is nothing holding JT or JS back, but both truly need a mental and heart reset to get back in the game. Both seem to me like they just don't really care at this point--especially Thomas. That finish on 15 looks like he had completely surrendered.
