Worse US Open choke: Rory today or Dustin Johnson in 2015?

Dustin Johnson obviously 3 putted 18 to lose by 1. However, he did have a few bad breaks

 

Rory on other hand missed a similar short putt, though it wasn't to win it all. The last 4 holes were unreal choke from Rory.

 

I would give a slight nod to Rory's choke being worse just because DJ got careless with eagle putt thinking he could win.

Hate to see posts like this. Granted he probably should have won. But WE the average golfer have no idea how much pressure those guys play under and on the hardest courses. And everyone is watching.

I doubt these missed putts will be remembered the same way that Phil's drive at Winged Foot will, for example. Or even Montgomery fanning a 6 iron in the same tournament.

 

I doubt Rory is happy about these, but I don't think they will be all timers

Yeah that one was really bad, but for whatever reason doesn't seem to have the same staying power. I think over time this will be similar. It won't be one that everyone remembers

Choke:

 

“to lose one's composure and fail to perform effectively in a critical situation”

 

My theory is he went after distance to the detriment of his short game, so that he now has to play the ball back in his stance leading to too much in to out and as noted by the tv guys inability to fade the ball when needed.  This sort of thing is one aspect of the distance problem some people want to deny exists.  The guy who some people think is the greatest player of his generation with somehow not quite living up to his potential.

 

And he sometimes misses important putts to lose big championships.

 

OK, let’s face it he has the temperament of a 14 year old girl.

Rory’s masters one is much worse. It was Greg Norman bad. This one is snatching defeat from the jaws of victory

Has to be Rory.  Rory declined an interview...and he is usually very available.  Guy was absolutely crushed.

It depends on if they win the next one like Scott or Johnson, then the redemption story.

 

what makes Norman’s one in 1996 so bad was it was his last big chance to win the Masters after so many close finishes. Everyone knew it at the time too.

 

If Rory wins the next major or one next year then it won’t be remembered the same way. If he never wins a major again and doesn’t contend like that, it will be remembered forever in his career I feel.

To be fair Bryson missed a short one on 15 too.

 

Rory's SG putting was still +2.21 for the round. Bryson was -0.59.

 

The 5th hole screwed Rory over as well.

It's not that-it's the posters taking almost sadistic glee at his misfortune.  I joined up back in April, but if I see much of that kind of crap going forward I'll just log back out for good.
