Worse US Open choke: Rory today or Dustin Johnson in 2015?

It depends on if they win the next one like Scott or Johnson, then the redemption story.

what makes Norman’s one in 1996 so bad was it was his last big chance to win the Masters after so many close finishes. Everyone knew it at the time too.

If Rory wins the next major or one next year then it won’t be remembered the same way. If he never wins a major again and doesn’t contend like that, it will be remembered forever in his career I feel.

The thing with this one is Bryson's bunker up-and-down will be the memorable moment of the tournament. I think only the most hardcore fans will even remember Rory's missed putts 5 years from now. They will remember Bryson's shot

What was so memorable about say 2006, was the most memorable shots were the flubs. Arguably same with Norman in 1996.

The story of this one will be Bryson

Going to have to disagree.  This is worse than Phil at Shinnecock. And I'm a Rory fan.

Faldo played better than Bryson did today in 1996, a final round 67 under Sunday pressure was as good as it gets. Bryson hit that unbelievable shot at 18 but was also in trouble recklessly he should never have been (terribly decision to hit driver at 18 and a bad three putt on 15). Rory was 2 shots clear with 4 holes left and bogeyed 3 of the 4 to lose by one with tiny putts missed. Realistically Bryson’s great bunker shot should be to make a playoff at best, not win the tournament without Rory’s hand.

Winged foot was the one with the big sprayed drive. Shinnecock was where Retief goosen went like 100/100 on putts inside 30 feet like he was prime Tiger

It's all true what you are saying but over time i think the defining moment will be the bunker shot. We tend to remember stuff like that if everything else was relatively in the normative zone. Like he shot 71 today but he didn't play terribly. And was pretty close to what the field did

With Rory, I kinda felt he made a bunch of putts outside of the "normal make range" so he was just normalizing his stats.  Sucks for sure, he hit some bad putts, but Bryson's up and down on 18 is close to as clutch as Payne's was, if not more so.

DJ 2 putts to get into playoff.  Rory makes those 2 short putts and he wins.  So Rory's was the worse one.  Plus he also bogey 3 of last 4 holes to boot.

I think DJ's was worse.  Bryson hit a nice shot on 13 to stay within range of Rory.  DJ basically made 3 putts within 12 feet when 1 putt would've won it, 2 would've made a playoff, and 3 lost it.

In DJ’s defence though, he had really a terrible green at Chambers Bay and it was also a downhill putt. Went for the win, was probably more stupid decision as much as a choke to hit the first putt so aggressively.

I doubt these missed putts will be remembered the same way that Phil's drive at Winged Foot will, for example. Or even Montgomery fanning a 6 iron in the same tournament.

I doubt Rory is happy about these, but I don't think they will be all timers

Yeah Monty was horrible. Fairway 6 iron, one of the best iron players ever, and he hit so fat.

Phil's driver was terrible but he only hit two fairways all day on that Sunday.

I still remember watching and yelling at the screen before he hit it LOL. Literally everyone knew he was gonna miss by a mile except him apparently

Phil 3 putted from 5 feet on the par 3 17th.

haha---see that proves my point about what we remember LOL. All i remember about 2004 is the 7th green was a nightmare, and Retief putted like a man who had made a deal with the devil

Ouch, just finished watching that. Bryson looked clutch all day but Rory had it almost in the bag.

I don't think it matters a great deal to Rory how much other people remember the missed putts vs Bryson's bunker. shot He's definitely going to remember those misses and have to deal with when he has short putts on the back nine of majors in future.

Let's consider others.

1. IK Kim at the Dinah Shore in 2012.

2. Doug Sanders on the final hole in the 1970 Open Championship at St. Andrews.

3. Stewart Cink on the final hole in the 2001 US Open.

4. Mark Calcavecchia at Kiawah Island on his Sunday singles match against Monty, who is another choker.

5. Monty from the final fairway to the 72nd green ("What shot was that?!").

6. Phil on the final hole a few minutes later ("I'm such an idiot").

7. Frenchy on the final hole at Carnasty in 1999.

8. Tom Watson on his final putt for history at Turnberry in 2009.

9. Greg Norman's final round at the 1996 Masters.

10. Hunter Mahan's chunked chip shot at the 2010 Ryder Cup.

11. Sang Moon Bae's fat chip shot at the 2015 Presidents Cup.

12. Bernhard Langer's final putt on the final hole of the final match at Kiawah Island in 1993.

13. Curtis Strange on any of his matches at Oak Hill in 1995--needed just a half point anywhere to retain the Cup.

14. Scott Hoch to win his first green jacket in 1989.

15. Dustin Johnson at both Pebble Beach and Whistling Straits.

16. Rory on his final nine at Augusta in 2011.

17. Adam Scott's splendid finish at Royal Lytham in 2012.

18. The US Ryder Cup team's Meltdown at Medinah, or to be more PC, The Miracle at Medinah.

19. Lorena Ochoa at Cherry Hills in 2005, fat chunk into the water on the final hole.

20. Nick Watney's final round at the 2010 PGA Championship.

Yes, those things happened too. It was so dry and dusty that day.  I was staggering, dehydrated, toward the shuttle stop and paused to see Phil bat it around 17 green for a double.  Here is a photo of the bus depot at Shinnecock that day.

Rory didn’t throw away the tournament today.   He had been 4th/5th all weekend and then had a string of good shots to bring him in contention today and couldn’t close it out.

he didn’t blow a 4 day lead with just some bad puts.   He would never have been 1st or tied for first unless he had made some amazing shots today

he’s got nothing to be ashamed of.   Bryson just played better.  And Bryson played amazing if you consider how many shots he was off the fairway and still

kept it together

Every decision is questioned in your head.

Every mistake is magnified.

Rory has been in this place a long time. LIV golf. The PGA stabbing him in the back. And now his marriage.

I hope Rory comes back from this but it is devastating. Much more so than any other tournament he has lost. Good luck to Rory. Go win The Open.

Scott Hcoh was a much worse putt than Rory. It wasn't even 2 feet and fairly easy putt.
