Mickelson & his Ping Eye2 Wedges (topics merged)

Recommended Posts

Damn, this thread just makes me regret the day I traded in my Ping L wedge. I had bagged it for quite a while all the crap was going on. I assumed it was going to be outlawed and finally caved, I traded it in on a used Palmer V grooved 60 degree wedge. THE VERY NEXT DAY, the settlement between Ping and the USGA was announced..........

They seem to be ripping him pretty good about the wedge. I wonder if they would do this for certain other players? If your name isn't Parnevik, the answer is obvious.

He is within the rules to use the wedge. I am sure this is also some sort of jab at the USGA since he is ticked at them for not approving certain clubs that he says are legal. But the bottom line is, he is not breaking the rules.

I am sure there are other players in the field using the wedge. There are probably some that have never taken them out of the bag. What about them?

I actually think it's kind of refreshing to see players choosing equipment based on what performs best rather than who pays the most for them to use it.

Agreed. All the "Spirit of the rules" nonsense is bizarre. The groove ban is an arbitrary attempt to change how people play, and the announcers are treating it like it's no different from playing the ball as it lies.

I think belly putters are more of a "spirit of the rules" violation than an eye two wedge.

Why wouldn't PM and Ping "be a good match?" He used them throughout college and during his early years on Tour...

McCarron needs to issue an apology. Cheating was the wrong word. He's running for the Tour's Policy Board and wants his name out there.
He's standing by his guns on TGC right now. I admire him for voicing his opinion when so many tour players just say what they think is "media safe".

McCarron just said the USGA should talk to Ping and get the lawsuit dropped.

Uh..................

(ETA: "Spirit of the game" probably says to forfeit your Tour wins with a long putter, too, Scott. We gonna see that anytime soon?)

Scott Mccarron just talked TGC.

Took the gloves off.

"this is a gentleman's game"
"looks bad to me and it looks bad to the fans"

He said tour guys have actually talked to Phil in person about it.

Basically said nearly all the guys are against these clubs being used and the only ones who are for it are the guys playing them.

I just heard Scott McCarron b**** and moan about the wedge on GC. I love how he said "If two guys are in the rough and one has square grooves and the other doesn't, the guy with the square grooves is at an advantage."

I find that interesting coming from someone who's using a belly putter.

I wonder if Scott believes if two guys have an eight footer for birdie and the win but one is using a putter that he can steady with his body he's at a distinct advantage. Does he have a problem with that? What about the "spirit of competition" in that situation?

Oh wait, it's legal, right? Right? You can use that putter, right, right?

I tell you what, Scott. If the "spirit of the game" is so important to you why don't you switch to a Wilson 8802?

Being called a cheater in golf is about the worst thing someone can call you. Phil is not cheating by playing a club that is within the rules, McCarron is wrong in using that word. I just saw that interview, he kinda backed off the cheater comment when Jim Gray asked if he still thought it was cheating.

Getting off track a bit but...

He used them during his Yonex years for a bit. Im not sure what other companies you refer to- he went from Yonex to Titleist to Callaway.

Funny you say Ping is the best out there yet you do not game even one of Ping's clubs.

Pot meet kettle. Geez, Mr Long Putter sure has gotten morality.

Originally I was in favor of the new wedge rules but after hearing Breed explain what conforms I just decided the new rules are nuts.

If the spirit of the game was so important to McCarron and the like, why don't they use the same exact ball? Why do guys use balls that spin more? Or are longer? Or both, etc?

Like I wrote in another thread, stop using the belly putter. I bet Scott does not mind using that belly putter, the one he can steady with his body, when he's got a downhill left to right from 8 feet for the win.

What's that sound I heard coming from San Diego? Is that a stone flying threw a glass house or McCarron's empty words?
