Does anyone still game Ping Eye 2's?

Hit em good

Recommended Posts

I bought an Eye 2 sand wedge off of Ebay last weekend and just hit it today. I cannot speak to the rest of the set but if the other irons play as well as the sand wedge did for me today then a full set of those clubs would work great for me. My home course is a mess most of the time and was wet and cold today. You are often times hitting out of muck, no grass, etc. this time of year. My irons are Ping G-20s but for my home course my sand wedge will be the Eye 2 going forward because you can hit this thing out of wet, hard sand, hard tack, muck, etc. When I play a really nice course that has fluffy grass, soft white sand, and is generally well cared for I will probably play my G-20 SW but to play in not so good conditions the old Eye 2 hit the spot. I had read posts where folks said they still carried this old club and after hitting it a few times today I understand why the club comes so highly recommended.

PING Eye 2 players are too classy to use the term "game". Yeah, I'm rockin' some Eye 2 pluses.

I do a shoot out with 6 irons about once a year. The Eye 2s always beat out some serious competition.

I own: Redlines, X22 Tours, I701 Tours, TA7s, Apex 99, and VIPs. Eye 2s are sprinkled with some kind of magic dust.

Ugly, yet beautiful. Beauty is as beauty does.

Becu +'s are in the closet and the Stainless box grooves zzlites are back in the bag. I just can't give them up, they just fit my swing perfectly.

I knew Wolfpack would make another appearance. Howdy from the home of the Pack.

I try, but can't kick my eyes to the curb. One of the cool things about Eye 2s is you can play the same club from 2-iron to LW.
Consistency!

Was paired with a guy last season who was still gaming his eye2's. He mentioned he bought them brand new. My buddy asked him if he used any other irons since buying these . He replied why ? They work great , not broken and have payed for themselves many times over. He then tossed his cig down and drilled a green from 160yd out , picked up his cig and started walking ... like a boss.

Ya there GI irons ... but I keep em clean .

First post, figured I'd add my story to this thread...

Last month I met my family in Doral for a week. I was flying from Portland, OR with a new baby so I didn't bring my clubs. My dad, who drove, brought an extra set for me to use. It was a set of Mizunos, which I regularly play (MP-57), but he threw in a Ping Eye2+ lob wedge with a KT-M shaft. Long story short, that lob wedge was like magic. I usually hate hitting full shots with a lob wedge, but with the Eye2 it was a joke. I was laughing that I should just pick up a set of Eye2's like I had when I was younger. I'm a 4hcp these days, but don't get to play much and the MP-57s are not exactly forgiving.

So I hopped on eBay one night that week and was amazed to see how many great sets of Eye2's were for sale. I wanted Eye2+ for the lofts, and since the KT shaft worked so well on the lob, I looked for a set with that shaft in red dot. Ended up there was a really great condition set that still had the shaft labels in perfect condition, so I knew they were well cared for. Only issue is that they were listed as +3/4". I emailed the serial number to Ping who responded that they left the factory standard length. So I figured they were just shaft extensions and ended up picking up the set of 3-SW for $115!

Last week I took off the grips and pulled the shaft extensions. Just finished regripping them. Here are a few pics.

Kauffee, great first post, super buy on the clubs, and good move to call Ping re the shaft lengths. I wouldn't have thought to do that and just assumed 3/4" longer shafts.

Snuck out for 9 holes yesterday with the Eye2+'s. Smooth 37. Only missed one green with the irons. Just so easy to hit and so straight.

Ironically, the green I missed was on a shot I hit pure and dead on the stick. I actually walked to the side to see if the flagstick was obscuring the ball on the green. Turned out the ball was plugged a few feet short of the green, about 5 yds short of the hole.

My distances seem about a half a club shorter than my Mizunos on the long and mid irons. But I'm maybe a full club shorter on the 7-PW. Seems like the ball is ballooning a bit more.

So... question for those of you still playing these. Did you have trouble keeping the trajectory down on the short irons? Would these benefit from a lower-spinning ball?

Yes the ball ballooning is what I experienced when I last played my eye 2s. And I was also a half club short in the mId irons to a full club in the short. Were u playing ZZ lites by any chance? This is why playing forged clubs are better for me and why I wouldn't play ping eye 2's any more other than for fun rounds.

I still have my SW and Lob eye 2's but I like the spacing and style of the Volkeys. The 1 & 2 iron made an appearance this weekend though. Love these clubs!!

No, KT shafts.
I would like to play them more than just for fun since they set up so well and are so easy to hit for me... but I'll have to figure out a way to keep the ball down a little more with the short irons.

Before I reshafted mine I had some ballooning with all the irons, but this was natural for Eye 2's. Since my reshafting the ball has come down a lot and I'm even flighting my 8-pw better than ever. Sometimes I wish Ping would re-introduce eye 2's with conforming grooves for those of us who still like gaming these.

Got a set of Eye2+ 4-W originally with KT and reshafted with KBS Tour stiff.

I hit them fairly similar to my other irons, no ballooning with KBS Tour unlike ZZLite which I dislike. KBS is very solid. No trouble with the swing weight... Bang on at D0.
