Interesting set. This guy seems to do some great restoration work. http://www.ebay.com/...T-/231415025187

Had him rechrome a set of Hogan Apex for me. Not a fan. Sold them as soon as I got them back.

This is the guy that you want to send your Pings to if you're looking for a cheaper alternative. Also, unlike Ping, he WILL do BeCu clubs.

BeCu's are stupid easy to refresh, provided all you want to do is make them look like new. I put my 1-A in a small container and filled it with water to cover the hosel and then dropped Polydent denture cleanser tabs into it until the water turned a dark green and left it overnight. The next day I used a stiff nylon brush and running water to clean the slime off. Other than battle scars, the head looked brand new off the shelf.

Caution :

If the head isn't the genuine BeCu it turns into some other stuff I have not identified. I tried the same on a 2 Iron and it came out so disgusting I just stuck it into deep storage and left it there. I really should take it out and clean it but I was so disappointed that I totally lost interest in the club.

Yeah...this method, the Coca-Cola bath, Barkeepers Friend, etc, aren't quite the same as a retumble.

These old clunkers are junk. Only old men and junkies play them. I think this thread is for the sick and twisted. Update your sticks guys. Put those becus up on bst and wash your hands of them. No need to keep something 30 yrs old.

I still play these. I didn't play them much last year but this year I think I'm going to put them in play more (if they behave). I just put some old school Victory grips on them ...... Sorry about the pic quality.

Any of you see this? :)

I threw this up on Twitter but didn't expect that much attention, esp not for a set of 30 year old irons.

Not trying to start anything but seriously are the EYE 2 + the ones with the now non conforming grooves? The reason I ask is that recently I found a EYE 2 PW head on the yard ( I work for a metal recycling company) it was in pretty decent shape when I cleaned it up and it has a relief ground on the leading edge of the sole. It is just marked EYE 2 no plus mark. I threw an old S300 in it and checked the loft and lie it came out at 47* loft and 64* lie. I just needed to know the difference or if it is conforming.

If it's an Eye2, it should be 50º. Eye2+ no plus, 48.5º. I'm pretty sure all Eye2s have non conforming grooves.

Stu, you might have a "plus-no-plus" head. They had the Eye2+ head shape/sole grind, with the Eye2 grooves that caused the scheiststurm, and the Eye2+ lofts. 47° is strong, as spec was 48.5°, but someone could have had it bent strong. Or any number of other things going on. ;)

Count the number of grooves in the face and compare with an Eye2+ PW picture on the web. Should likely be about one more groove in a club with the "old" square grooves.

I would still be bagging my Eye 2+ & BeCu Eye 2 SW had the powers that be, deemed them illegal after all these years.

Its OK to hit the ball 900yds, but God forbid a groove be deemed an advantage.

There is still so much misinformation about the grooves.

Not sure I want to waste time rehashing the same info that's been posted countless time before but people ignore, since people will just ignore this post yet again. Suffice it to say that the majority of the Eye2's in the market are conforming. Even if you have the type that are not, such as the Eye2 +, they are still okay to use for the next 10 years for all but those guys playing in USGA national level events or on the PGA tour. For some reason a LOT of people hear the words "non conforming" and they assume they are illegal to play, which is not the case for something like 99% of all golfers in the US.

I agree but I do play competitive....even on the state level they are illegal. I'm not hashing from a weekend warrior. It is a legit complaint.... I played wedges for 20+yrs that were suddenly deemed a competitive advantage....and you & I both know that's not the case. I also used a long putter, now that stroke is illegal after using it for 20+yrs.

The game changes, as do rules, but it doesn't mean they made the right decision IMO. The powers that be got all pissy about the belly stroke cause a newer generation was using/winning with it..... Though for the previous 25yrs it was fine.

Great thread and forced me into marketplace for new Ping irons to go with my Cleveland Classic Tour irons. Picked up some Ping Eye 2 +'s last weekend with 3-SW in good nick. On emailing Ping the serial code it seems they were originally a Blue dot on exiting the factory. I bought as a Red dot.

Have KT-M shafts fitted with Dyla grips. Should I be concerned with the legitimacy of these clubs or would changing the dot color be a reasonably standard feature for an owner to undertake?

Thanks in advance....

Pretty standard to bend at least 2 color codes. No need for concern. Blue is .75 up and red .75 down so only 1.5 degrees different.

Okay fair enough. I'm surprised you are finding state level tournaments where the clubs are illegal. Do you have the Eye2+'s or the older model? After Karsten sued the USGA part of the settlement included grandfathering in of the Eye2 clubs, however the 2010 groove rule changed that somewhat.

Here is a link to the USGA website if anyone is interested in reviewing what's what. http://www.usga.org/infoclubsdb/search_results.asp Remember, the out and out ban from use of old groove clubs doesn't occur until 2024 except for high level amatuer events, or the local events feeding them. Some people think pre 2010 grooves are "illegal" for use today, but that's not the case for most people (sorry, repeating myself).

Dug out the BeCu set. These haven't been used in years, unlike the stainless set that I use on occasion. Will see if I have time to clean them up.

There you go. Just grab an old 12* Railor and a driver and you are good to go. :)

In fairness I bet of all the 1 irons on the planet that is probably one of the easier ones to hit.

One of the guys at my club has a set in the bag. He's a +2 handicap and is the biggest club ho I've ever met, but has never switched irons. He bought a new set of MP-64's right when they came out but switched back in a matter of days. He goes through drivers, fairways, and putters like crazy though!!

Embarrassed to say that I have never hit these classics, but I am interested in adding a set to the collection. Haven't seen an address photo for the mid and short irons. Are they dramatically different from address than the current G or I series pings?

Yes. They're not pretty. Tons of offset.

The look like they have more offset than they really do--their offset is almost exactly the same as the G10s ect but with the narrowing tapered hosel the offset appears bigger than what it is.
