Dogs on the course

Recommended Posts

Why not?
I did a search for this, and after going about 5 pages back, I didn't see anything. Sorry if I missed it.

Can you take dog on the course with you anywhere? I've never seen anyone bring a dog with them for a round, but it seems like the perfect activity to bring a dog along. I understand that some courses may not want any dog poo on the course, or things like that, but it seems to me like some courses like muni's and city courses might allow dogs. Does anyone know if anywhere allows this, and if so, why not?

If everyone had well trained dogs....i'm sure it would be allowed....but the reality of it is, if they let dogs on courses, most of them would run around and cause problems for other golfers on the course.

And before people get all huffy puffy....i know i know, you're dog is super well trained and the best dog in the world....but that's not the case for every dog.....

We had a problem at our course with people wanting to bring their dogs with them. If it were one dog here and there, fine. But now imagine the scenario when every person that plays the course has a dog with them, I think this would not be good for anyone. We banned dogs from the facility the day a guy brought his pit bull to the range with him.

I know a guy in San Diego who takes his Choc. Lab out every round in his cart. Styles just sits there and enjoys the action. Never barks or whimpers.
He's been riding in the cart since he was a pup.

That's super....there are probably a lot of dogs that would behave this well on the course....but that doesn't change the fact that there's just as good a chance that there are a lot of dogs that would run around disturbing people, pee/poo everywhere, bark incessantly....and then there's the biting issue.....

I've seen dogs twice in the last year.

1) Older bulldog. Followed the owner everywhere and was well behaved. Went to the cart when his owner went to the cart and off the cart when the owner did. Never had to be called, coaxed, or anything. Nor did she ever care about anything else that was going on other than being with her owner.

2) 6 month old Golden Retriever. Off leash. Being 'walked' by nearby homeowner at dusk (owner had leash in hand). I bent down and had my arms wide open and she came running right into them. The two I was with didn't care either as they were dog people too (as am I).

My Thursday league has an adjoining house on the 1st with invisible fence and a dog that comes running/snarling right up to the line and then barks the whole time you're on the green.

I've taken my collie with me before. I always call ahead and ask though. If the course is dead, they usually don't care at all, he loves to walk and doesn't bark really.

i was cool with dogs until i saw one on a course one day sporting a flat brim, listening to a radio and talking loudly on his cell phone. Then the S.O.B hit into me no less than 5 times. The last time i was so frustrated, i hit it right back at him. He proceeded to chase that 20 yard slice, tracking it, leaped over a bench on 14 tee, crawled up and over a leaning tree trunk just off 15 rough, deftly dodged a screaming pink precept that came off the blade of one member of the combined 68 HC foursome of women (they should also be banned, oh wait.....nevermind) coming down 12. i watched him catch the thing in his mouth and sprint 215 yards down the fairway where he dropped it at my feet, panting expectantly. WTF? No Zeus or Marbles, or Doritto, whatever unfortunate name you're called, I do not want to play with you! And you can keep that ball and the rabies you left all over it.

Simple concept where we draw the human/canine play time activity line that is not to be crossed.

I've seen some course super/maintenance guys who have border collies or other hounds with them on the course. They are great for keeping geese away.

In addition to the problems mentioned by others, I will add that I have never seen a dog rake a sand trap after running through it.

I've never seen a dog pick up his own poop either, though I have seen a few eat it.

Along the lines of this:

Our muni has a park right next to it, and dogs are being walked along side of it all the time. Last Sunday I went out and played and on the longest Par 5 of the course, guy in our group hit his drive and the dog picked it up while still rolling down the FW. Dog finally dropped it about 40 or 50 yards past where it would have hit. Owner finally caught up to him, got the dog to drop it and threw it thinking we didn't see it.

Funny to see...but the question is, do you play it as it lies if the ball was picked up by a dog while it did not stop rolling?

1. Never take my dog to a public course. Only my home club, when I'm playing alone during a leisurely stroll
2. If your dog is not well behaved and properly trained to avoid all the negatives discussed above. Then it's the dumb arse owner's issue. My dog walks where I walk, stops when I stop, and never barks at other dogs {yep others at my club ride or walk with their dogs also}. Waits off the green when I putt and does not frequent bunkers.
3. She craps early morning and evening, but I carry a plastic bag just in case. Not willing to pick up poop? Leave dog at home.
4. You ever pee on a golf course? I have. What's the big deal about a little doggie pee?

Just sayin'. Not everybody's circumstances are the same. So before using generalizations to condemm an activity, consider other possibilities where something just might be ok.
