Get your arm swing and pivot in sync

I'm sorry for being dumb but i have to ask. When doing the drill, on the back swing as you have set out with the wrists fully set and the hands hip high, should part of the goal be to keep both arms poker straight. The feel i get when i force the trail arm straight its like im pulling my left arm out of its socket, or is it ok to have a very soft bend in the trail arm. I know this isn't the aim of this drill but i just want to do it properly

Will feel straight. If it bends slightly so be it. It's a drill that's a motion not static position. If arm swing is short enough rear arm should be straight. As it becomes chest high and longer the trailing arm has to bend.

Dan great article my man. It sounds as if this would be a good drill for me to work on to get some more width and keep my hips opening on the backswing. Good stuff

This is a good article but as you show in the example in the picture how do you avoid moving the head away from over the ball...? This is my problem, I am building flexibility but not using it to my advantage by turning too much around not up with more (what look like) restricted shoulders.

Youtube golf instruction video
only shows a ball distance or direction
of about 3 inches

Not sure I understand. Why are you trying to restrict your shoulders? The turn is responding to the swinging of the arms. If the arms are extended, and therefore must be in front of you, you have no choice but to turn. The "up" happens because you are bent over. So shoulders turn on a tilted plane

Iteach wrote "The turn is responding to the swinging of the arms. If the arms are extended, and therefore must be in front of you, you have no choice but to turn. The "up" happens because you are bent over. So shoulders turn on a tilted plane" which everyone should remember. I would again suggest that so long as your turn is a response to the arm swing they will be in synch.

Great Post Dan. You refer to two things that happen when the arms move too slowly. Can you please explain what types of shots usually result from this - and also what types of shots result when the arms move too fast. For me, when I hit a big push, it feels like my arms are left behind,...moving too slow. And when I'm hooking, it often feels like im all arms and late pivot. Just want to make sure i'm connecting the dot's properly here. Thanks!

Is this video a good representation?

I would have thought that drill was almost the opposite, but I might have interpreted Dans one incorrectly

I beed working on the drill/feeling and I am suprised to find how mush you have to fight to get to the hip high position (with wrist set) in the follow through. It gets really hard to keep things really synched up with long irons and woods. Looking foward to a DC vid to see if I have the correct interpretation.

You're not supposed to hold the wrist set to hip high on the follow through. Just swing your arms back and through while keeping them straight and set the wrist on the backswing.
