It is getting out of control with fans yelling stuff after players hit! (merged)

If someone that is close to the USGA/PGA or have insider insight curious to hear their perspective on why they aren't fixing this problem. My prejunior who loves golf gets turned off from watching it on TV with these people yelling stupid stuff. Turns around to me and tells me these guys are morons. Great way to help grow the game by allowing these guys to ruin the experience for others not just in person but on TV also. It's a shame that there are so many real golfers out there that don't have a chance to see these great players in person while you get these idiots that don't really play golf attending the events yelling stupid stuff. This is very easy to fix - marshal sees you yell you get ejected immediately. After that happens to the first few and publicized it should stop.

Just saw that they had guys in the gallery with vests saying "cellphone patrol" on them or something of that sort, to police cell phones ringing during a player playing his shot.

Can't we get some "Idiots yelling patrol"? Seriously.

As sad as it may be to some golf fans, I think that the increase in screams like GET IN DA HOLE reflect a growing fanbase for golf, or at least beyond the stereotypical old rich dudes. Go to essentially any other sporting event and golf tournaments still look incredibly civil. I know golf is supposed to be better, more proper, etc....but in order to attract the masses of fans, maybe some feel that the party/crazy fan type of atmosphere is what's needed.

we already have marshals on every tee box with the task of keeping everyone behind the lines and quite before the hit. it doesn't take a rocket engineer (sorry sergian woodsian slip) to take the same resources you already have in place to do the same thing they did just 60 seconds prior but just extend their job 60 seconds longer. yell after the strike you get removed. it takes no additional resources / money since the marshal is already there. simple and effective. then again, its probably me, I have zero patients for idiots acting like that in life whether in golf, work, forums, etc. I am attending the open and I will have a very hard time on sunday not saying something to the idiot next to me screaming stuff like that.

[/quote]this is an interesting point. looking at it logically it makes no sense to allow these idiots to act like this that distracts from the avid fans and players. they must obviously know that. so why not change it? its very easy to fix like I said we already have marshals so just extend their job 60 seconds longer. I think what you mention could be the logical reason why the tour allows this. Deliberate intention to allow it. They may believe in order to grow the game they need to appease (sp?) to people that don't really play but show up at the events and make it seem on TV more like your blue collar sports where fun is tail gating, getting loaded, and screaming in the fans (granted you are not right next to the quarterback). all kidding aside this is the only rational explanation they deliberately allow it to continue.

Try going to a Philadelpia Eagles game (I'm a Eagles fan), you should hear what's said there, I can't stand the idiots at golf tournaments either.

1. Stop selling alcohol at events, which will probably never happen because they make $$$
2. Kick the white trash out that act like idiots

1. Totally agree... will never happen. They make a ton of money from it.
2. I would say it's mainly men between the ages of 21-28 that cause the majority of issues. They are only there for the scene, to meet girls, while getting drunk.

Those people who yell random stuff out after a shot are not actually interested in the golf itself and just want to draw attention to themselves and think they are being cool, and what is it with this "light the candle" or "mashed potatoes" that I sometime hear?

Does anyone mind the "Luuuuke" or "Kuuuuch" noises after Donald or Kuchar hit good shots? I personally don't mind it, i guess it is a type of applause, not as stupid as yelling "get in the hole" when a player is teeing off on a par 5.

On the other hand, I loved it when Bubba and Ian Poulter got the crowd cheering during their swings at the Ryder Cup last year? There was more of a "go team" atmosphere as opposed to individual clowns.

How about we try holding a tournament with no quiet signs? Constant cheering and noise would drown out any "get in the hole" or "mashed potatoes." Give it a shot in a less important or exhibition tournament and see how it works.

Why is there silence anyway? Never could figure out why a pitcher in baseball could deliver a 90mph pitch with pinpoint accuracy in a crowded stadium and a golfer needs absolute silence to hit a golf ball.

Just look to last years Ryder Cup first tee with Bubba. Silence is not a prerequisite to hitting a ball.

I marshal at a web.com event each year and have done it for the past seven years. These (if all events are run basically the same) are volunteers that agree to help out, and expect no pay in return except to enjoy a nice day outside and watch a little golf while helping players mark their balls, tell people to stand still, etc. And, they are mostly doing this to help the charity that benefits from the tournament. Many are retired individuals and/or women.

I'm 6'4" / 240 lbs. and the last thing I want to do it put myself in a controntational situation with someone that is more than likely drunk, and who is hanging out with three of his buddies that are likely drunk as well (if not drunk, then certainly a beligerent individual(s)). I'm certainly not trained for those situations. I would imagine most police officers, while on duty, would also want nothing to do with it as well, unless absolutely necessary and they are totally prepared for the situation. Sorry - it's not in the marshal's job description. Throwing out people is for highly trained, properly compensated individuals!

Even if the marshals are to simply report the idiots to an authority, it would be impossible to track them down. Example, I'm on hole #8 and somehow call to security that an idiot in yelling after shots and won't respond to my requests to be quiet. By the time security gets there - the idiots are half a course away - sounds like a wild goose chase detracting security from more important tasks.

But, I must say, in my time as a marshal (and based on the few PGA and LPGA events I have attended), I have NEVER heard anything yelled after a shot. I think these idiots are isolated to the PGA Tour and probably with only the biggest names (Tiger, Phil, Rory, etc.). So, we think it is more prevelant than reality since the cameras follow them more. I believe the rest of the crowds at the course are more civil.

What is the answer? I have no idea. I personally think some peer pressure from the crowd would help. Actually, I seem to be seering more "stink eyes" from the players recently. Hopefully this helps.

I was at the Wells Fargo. A friend of mine was with me he said anyone who screams any of that S**T in my ear is getting punched. Sure enough it happened. He punched the guy like he said and both were removed from the grounds.

We at Miller salute you, Mr. Punches golf screamers in the face guy. You don't take nothin' from nobody, and when those hooligans drunk off of foreign ale get out of hand, you show them who's boss. Sure you both get ejected, sure you might go to jail, but that's just how you roll. So here's to you Mr. Punches golf screamers in the face guy.

I really wish they'd bring those commercials back =p

Well, maybe this'll get bad enough that it'll actually take care of itself. I chuckled to myself on Sunday when Tiger played a shot and it sounded like literally hundreds of guys screaming random crap at the same time a split second after impact, and it just sounded like white noise. I mean, these guys are doing it for attention, right? Somewhere, someone is bragging to the rest of his foursome, "hey, you know 'mashed potatoes'? Yeah, that was me. I did that." But if you get enough idiots screaming, then you can't hear any of them, and voila--problem solved.

Either that, or just nut tap the whole lot of 'em. Especially the "mashed potatoes" guy.
