Thanks....only those who have truly loved a dog understand the pain of losing them. I sometimes think that I let myself love my dogs too much, but at the same time I think it's impossible to love them "too" much. It's obvious that every one in this thread knows what I'm talking about. It helps to know I'm not alone.

Its impossible to love them too much. They are the best. They cheer you up when you're down. Try to heal you when you're hurt or sick. Always there to lend an ear. But best of all show you what is true unconditional love.

Life is just so much better with that best friend. It really is a shame that we don't have longer with them.

Kaysquare, I really feel your pain. We lost our miniature schnauzer Shadow almost two years ago. She was 18. She was my childhood pet, and honestly I didn't remember anything before her.

I will say this: you never stop missing them, but it does get easier to manage. The good times with our dogs far outweigh the sadness we feel when they pass. The amount of unconditional love that these dogs give us is immeasurable. I too have thought that my family shouldn't get another after Shadow passed, but our house was too empty without a furry friend.

I wish you the best, just remember all the good times and the great life you gave your pup.

Yep. Losing a family member that happens to be a pet is never easy. We had to put our 12 year old Myles down in Sep and feel for ya Kaysquare. :( It's just one of them things that you know the odds of you outliving your pet are greater then them outliving you. It's hard, but those short years with them are just pure awesome and joy (with minor frustrations).

I love this thread. It makes me miss my family's black lab/boxer mix we put down a couple of months ago because of seizures. We got her at only a couple of weeks old and had her for about 3 years. We took her to specialists in Chicago and nothing worked and everything got worse. Putting her down was one of the hardest things I've ever been a part of.

Putting them down or losing them is the only negative to owning a dog I can think of.

As I write this, my dog is snoring up a storm. The ol' lady's the dog person, me... don't like the responsibility. But she insisted we get a new one after we had to put the last one to sleep. Hurt like hell. We were walking up to a dog rescue fun day thing and this little guy stopped me and wouldn't let me pass. We had to take him. He's been with us for seven years and I know that the end is coming within the year. I love the little mutt like you wouldn't believe and I know I'm going to miss him. He is getting to that point where he sleeps a lot and can't remember his name. Its going to hurt like hell, I just know it. But I wouldn't trade the last seven years with him for the world. Get yourself a rescue dog, you will save two lives by doing that, yours and his...

This is what me and my brother did. He lives in Birmingham and there is a lady up there that does the rescues.

His dog, Ollie, was thrown out of a car on the interstate when he was about 4 weeks old. The lady just happened to be behind the car, saw a bag go out, and just decided to turn around and go double check what it was. She found him, found a foster for him, and my brother adopted him a few weeks later. He is the best trained dog and happiest dog I have ever seen. My brother says he lets him out in the morning, without a leash, and he goes and plays with the kids while they wait on the bus. Then when the bus gets there, he gets at the end of the line and sits like he is supposed to be waiting his turn to get on the bus.

My dog, Oreo's mom was a surrender to the lady. She was pregnant with the litter when she was dropped off. I saw the pictures the lady posted online and new I had to have Oreo. All his brothers and sisters were adopted in Massachusetts. I always remind him of this and that he could be pooping in the snow.

My other dog, Squirt wandered into a bar downtown. My roomate picked him up and sat him in his lap and the dog never moved. So he brought him home. We looked every where for the owner but never found him/her. I saw how good him and Oreo got along so I have kept him. The vet thought he was about 2 or 3 and that the dog probably belonged to a homeless person because he had heartworms and had probably never been to a vet. Doc said he at his rate he probably wouldnt have made it another year. I have pics of them and will try to get them up when I get to my phone.

My brothers dog is the brown/white one. He is a lab/beagle mix. Mine is the black/white one that looks like Ed the Hyena from the Lion King. He is a lab/pointer mix and the vet thinks some great dane is in there too.

F*cking awesome! Synchronised tongue wagging!

I love this thread. Really tugs at the heart strings...there's just something about canines that just goes straight to the core. I prefer most dogs to most humans. As I pointed out earlier, humans and dogs have co-evolved for many thousands of years.

i/we own 2 standard poodles. they can be a little bit of work from time to time but overall they are great dogs. the dont shed, are very intelligent and good demeanor. we got them from breeders who retired them and both breeders did a wonderful job of training them. additionally we have taken them to dog classes(which i highly recommend). mabel is on the left and is definitely partial to the wife. forest is on the right.

We have to put down one of ours today, easily the worst thing I've ever been through. I'm gonna donate $100 in her name to a bulldog foundation. We nicknamed her the Junk Yard Dog so I'm also gonna pick up a Scotty JYD pivot tool and maybe a headcover and keep it on my bag at all times. Dogs are amazing but when you have to put them down it's just awful.

All my sympathy to you Lefty. Next to losing a human loved one, losing a canine loved one is one of the most heartaching experiences one can go through. I still tear up once in a while thinking about my Golden who passed 5 yrs ago. In a weird way though, it kind of reminds me I'm alive (like it almost feels good rembering her, missing her, and feeling those emotions releasing).

Thanks Thug. It takes me a lot to start tearing up but whenever I think about it, I just can't stop. She's almost 5 and was born with hip dysplasia and blew her knee out about 2 months ago and just has gotten increasingly aggressive towards our others. Just need to keep reminding myself that she will be better off and won't have anymore pain.

I'm so sorry Lefty. There's no worse feeling in the world. It was 2 years ago yesterday that we had to put down our Miniature schnauzer Shadow. I think your plan to put some things in your bag to remember your pup by is great. My driver headcover looks exactly like Shadow. It's a great reminder of how happy she used to be when I came home from playing a round.

This really helped me get through the loss. Maybe it'll help you.

I really want one,but what the pluses vs.minus
A medical bill can run upwards of tens of thousands of dollars is my biggest fear if/when I do get a dog.

My preferred would probably be a Rottweiler. Maybe a Pincher. Maybe a German Shepard. My neighborhood isn't the greatest so I want something that will maul someone if they ever try to break in.

My big girl is Brandy, my 12 year old(goin on 3yo, lol) Rotty. Yep, for a Rotty, she's way past the ave, though her Father(Max) lived to 14yo. I've had Rottys since I was 9yo, when the My Father brought a Rotty and a Sheppard home from the SEAL team and my parents and the I have had em ever since. I love the breed. Brandy is the sweetest dog though one night when I was doing some paperwork after closing the bar(about 3:15am), and the guy tried to come in through the back kitchen window. She was laying at my feet at the bar, her ears perked up along with her head, she jumped up and trotted to the kitchen door, growled, amd dissapeared into the kitchen, then I heard an, "Oh f*ck no," and bunch of growling and tearing, I grabbed my handgun and appeared at the door and Brandy was on him with his forearm in her mouth and she snapped his ulna(one of two forearm bones), along with leaving gashes that required 28 stitches/staples to close, following an Open reduction(surgical setting ). She's amazing with children and my Sis's little girls used to ride on her back, lol. She's very playful. She goes about 95-98 lbs.

The little one is Springsy Hunter, first name of my college Teammate/roommate/best friend. He's 15 months and was a foster dog that I decided to keep. I didn't have the heart to send him back. He's the 5th such foster dog that I've ended up with, lol. Brandy and he got along so well , I said screw it, I couldn't let him go. He's a pain in the *ss and much higher maintenance than Brandy. They told us he was part Rotty, and he does look like a baby Rotty.

Only problem is that he's full frickin grown at 44 lbs, LMAO, half the size of a small Rotty, lol. I was gonna clip the tail, like the Rottys, but said the hell with it cuz I've never owned a dog with a tail cept the sheppard when I was a kid. The first pics are from the day that he came home and he went right to my chair, lol. He grabs everything, hense that B&D wrench case, lol. The costume was for a PetsMart costume contest and I had recieved the SCOR irons to review and it was one of the days that I felt pretty good and I wanted to go to the club to hit em. Well, my GF dressed him up and took this pic. I was standing in front of him, next to the bag when she snapped the pic. We went to the frickin contest, lol, and didn't win anything, but he had fun.

So these are my two. A Rotty and a Toy Rotty(I have no idea what else is in him, lol) :)

What is the average life of a Rotty?
The books say 8-12yo with the ave being 9-10yo. I've only had one(Brandy is my 5th) that passed before 9yo, and she was poisoned at the age of 8yo. She was in excellent health at the time, so I have no doubt that barring an unforeseen, late developed health condition/issue, she would've seen at least 11-12, though when they get past 10-11, it's sorta like a 75-80yo human in that they're fine today and gone tomorrow.

I've only had one "show" quality Rotty, that my P's gave me when they went from a home to a town home, and she passed at 10yo, the shortest life span of any of them.

All have come from solid blood lines and professional breeders because obviously, with a dog this size and temperament, that's critical. I have never had a single incident with any of them and all were very well socialized. The incident at the bar I do not count because ultimately, she was doing what she was bred to do, to protect.

Thanks for taking the time to post.

Have a great season

Fairways & Greens My Friend,
Richard
