P790 vs mizuno Hmb

Anyone looking at these 2 options?

I tried both out yesterday and I found the p790 to be longer on average by about 8-9 yards. I’m not sure if there is a difference in loft or length of the clubs but I tested both with half inch longer than standard shafts.

HMB felt softer especially on mishits. On pure strikes there wasn’t a great deal in it but HMB sounded a bit better. The P790 seemed slightly more forgiving. Looks wise they both look great. P790 seemed more compact than the HMB. I’m not sure if there is actually any difference but at address the face appeared longer to me on the HMB.

I could really bag either of these clubs and will be swapping out my AP2’s soon!

yeah very curious about this comparison as well. I do believe the P790 are 2 degrees stronger in the 5 iron thru 9 iron so maybe that's the difference in distance you are seeing. Can't wait to hit them both side by side as well!

I found the new 790 to be very easy to hit and surprisingly good feel. I like how it has very little offset and good looking top line at address.

I would be concern about the spin resulting on the low side. I’m actually considering trading my 900T for the 790s at 2* weak to reduce the offset further, add a touch more launch and spin.

Has anyone got a side by side picture??

I prefer the idea of Mizuno HMB to blend nicely with my MP 68's but being a low spin player I'd need to go with whichever spun more, give me more spin!

The specs of both are right on the web - not hard to look and see what the exact lofts are.

Pretty good comparison video here of the two. They are not matched perfect loft for loft but gives you a starting point.

One is a hollow muscle back and one is a hollow/foam filled players game improvement iron. I wouldnt put them side by side at all.

Mizno's version of the P790 is the hot metal pro

The real question you should be asking is which one gave you the best dispersion. You can adjust distance with loft tweaks and/or golf ball tweaks, but you can't adjust your (and most importantly IMO) front to back dispersion numbers. Irons aren't really all out distance tools, they are meant to hit fairly precise numbers, and hit those numbers consistently.

I say this because I did not find 790's to have very good front to back dispersion.

Tried both at my fitting along with the Ping i210 and Titliest T200. The P790 gave me the best numbers on mishits, with only 9 yards difference on blades/toe shots vs pure shots. The Mizuno was around 19 yards difference on mishits. The P790 also had the best dispersion, height, descent angle and distance of all but with the stronger lofts, that was to be expected. I ordered the P790’s and am waiting for them to come in; can’t wait,

Are they not both "players distance irons"? Foam or no foam they fill the same void.

Ok dont focus on the foam. The foam doesnt mean anything.

No, I would still not put them in the same class. In laymans I would say the HMB is harder to hit than the P790 or the HMP etc if you 'need forgiveness'

may have to disagree a bit. mizuno classifies this as a players distance iron according to the rep i spoke with. also, the hmb has more offset than the hmp (I have both, along with 919hm and 919f), and a thicker topline. i posted pics on another thread. on my flightscope, i get more distance from the hmb than hmp (i have it lofted 1 strong, which is still 1 weaker than hmp). i also get better dispersion on off center hits than hmp. now, a lot of that is swing and style - but side by side i would choose the hmb over hmp for forgiveness. and no, the hmb does not have foam, but neither does i500 along with others.

> Ive noticed about a 600-800 difference in spin, the 790 was much lower spin and consequently went further but I prefer the spin of the HMB. Both are great irons, it depends whether u prefer the high launch high spin or the longer distance low spin. I don't think you can go wrong with either iron.

Ditto for me -- HMBs had more reasonable spin during my testing. Loved the 790s too, but spin on these was too low for my delivery.
