Finally broke 90 and in style!

Haven't posted in a while but it's also been a slow year for me golf wise also. Anyways, like the title says I was finally able to break 90!! Not a huge accomplishment for many but it's my third year playing and my HC is about 20 so this was next milestone to hit after I was able to consistently shoot in the mid to high 90s. I shot 91 last year and that was the closest I came previously with a bunch of 92s and 93s.

Took the afternoon off work since it was just too nice here in NJ to be behind a desk and played my home course at Rutgers. Went 45 on the front and 39 on the back to shoot a 84!! I didn't break 90 for the first time but I crushed it! I guess this counts as breaking 40 on the back 9 too, if that's a thing.

Either way my game was ON today! First hole was an easy par that had me feeling good. My irons were dialed in which I think made the biggest different as my approach shots were great. The driver behaved mostly and even the slices were salvageable for bogey or DB. Had a nice sand save on #14 to keep a par streak alive and became part of a 5 par run! 9 pars total which is obviously a new personal best. The biggest key today was avoiding the dreaded 3s. No 3 putts or triple bogey on the card. I kept my short game in check and my putting was pretty good. Didn't drain any for birdie but I will take a lot of tap in pars.

I probably won't shoot this well again for some time so I'm enjoying it all right now! I'll leave you with a shot of my tee shot on #17, a par 3 with a bunch of trouble. When I stuck that one I knew I had my break 90 score in the bag. Final hole was a par 5 that I played nice and safe. Made bogey but that was more than good enough!!

Congrats! That's a great way to break a milestone. 39 on the back is a fantastic nine, and yes, breaking 40 for 9 is definitely a milestone all of its own. Keep up the good work!

Good work and keep working towards your goals. Me and a couple of the guys I play with talked the other day about how much fun golf was back when we were trying to break 100, 90, etc. Now if I have 2 bad holes it usually means I dont shoot in the upper 70's which is my goal every time out and it makes things miserable sometimes even though it shouldn't.

Limiting the blowup/bad holes will get you below 80 quickly

Good luck and great job!

I envy you right now! Congrats! I'm on track myself to hit that milestone, I'm hoping by the end of this season, but the way it is looking it will be next. Keep up the good work! I'm pretty lucky to play most of my rounds of golf with someone who is a very low handicapper. Every time I get mad at myself over, what I think is a bad shot, he tells me not to get so upset about it because a year ago that same shot would have been a million times worth, he does a good job of reminding how far I've come in my golf. Also he tells me I'm not good enough to get as mad as I do at the game hahahaha. Congrats again!

Ive heard the "you're not good enough to be mad at that miss hit" line before too! Keep getting that score lower, its an awesome feeling when you finally reach it! I was standing on the 16th tee when it really sunk in that I was going to have best round of life to date if I just kept playing smart golf and managed my misses. After finally shooting under 90 my only advice is to play smart golf, no hero shots and to accept the easy bogey and move on to the next hole.

I have yet to break 90 but I have come VERY close ONCE. The guy I typically play with has been golfing since he was young. I have been playing since I was 29 (I'm 31). He is probably 50 yrs old or (i've known him for 6 years maybe I should ask). He tells me all the time to just wait until I break 90, he claims it is going to be the best feeling in the world, golf wise. He says you'll almost never experience that feeling again after you do it, even if you break 80, or even 70. It seems like breaking 90 is confirmation to yourself that your game is legitimately improving. Anyway, congrats!

I swear once you break 90 you don't go back to shooting over 90. That's an exaggeration, of course, but it's a mental breakthrough. Now you know you can do it. There's no need to freak out over a bad few holes, because you're totally capable of pulling off a similar streak of excellent scoring.

Congratulations. I was really hoping to hit that milestone this year, but alas, not to be. But it's been my first year with multiple scores in the 90's. I'm thrilled that my handicap has come down by 3 this year to a 28.x. Had a good round going this week and then hit 3 tee shots in a row into the trees. Laying 6 and no ball in play yet, I went on to the next hole.

A good deal of my success this year is due in part to better fit clubs, from Redbird Sports, which I learned about because of one of the WRX podcasts. All they've done so far is adjust my length and lies, but I'm awaiting 2 new wedges that should be ready next week, and hope to be able to afford a new set of irons next season.
