Every 2-3 years. For me it's more of a visual check, if the chrome is wearing off and the grooves are getting a bit dodgy. I play about 10 months a year on average. For me though it really depends on how much you practice. If you are just playing golf 20-40 times a year or so you really won't get much wear. But if you practice bunker shots and work on your short game on a weekly basis then you many need new wedges every season.

I bet on average my lob wedge gets replaced about every 50 rounds, it doubles as my sand wedge as well, so gets lots of use. Gap wedge about every 100 rounds, and PW when I purchase a new set.

Spin isn’t like fresh grooves of course, but there has not been any difference after about year 3 though. Played last week, hit 5 greens and got up and down 11/13, most of those were short putts inside 5 feet. A couple full wedges from 100 yards both stopped about 3 feet in front of their mark. I didn’t play at all Feb - October but 2 rounds in 2 weeks now and I’m not missing the 60 degree wedge either. I’ve also not played anywhere difficult and would certainly miss it on a challenging course.

Talking about new wedges makes the “buy now” trigger finger itchy.

I'm on some 15+ year old 588 (52/56/60). The still spin plenty well enough for my needs - which are that they are predictable and not so much that they generate max possible spin. They've pretty much been at the same "plateau" for spin performance for many years. They're old friends that I can trust.

If I could get free new wedges every few rounds like the top pros get, then sure, I'd adjust my game to that level of groove freshness.

I had a set of Cleveland DSG wedges that were fantastic and lasted a ridiculous amount of time. I've pretty sure I used those DSG for at least 7 years and never thought they lost much action over that period.

Does anyone know if any brands and/or use of certain type of steels offer increased durability.

Weird question. I have no idea. Most of my wedges have always had dynamic gold shafts. I have always owned vokeys

I play about 100 rounds a season. I just replaced my 60 degree wedge last week. The previous one was 5 years old.

I have a groove sharpener that I use on the wedges once or twice a season. Seems to keep them "good enough" for my needs.
