Anyone else find the "seriousness" of the presidents cup almost comical?

As im watching the presidents cup last night and my wife is on the IPad on the couch next to me. The coverage cut to Ernie Els and TW in 'command central' making their pairings with their assistant coaches next to them. Listen I LOVE golf and can't get enough, but I was always wonder if im the only one who finds all the theatrics too much. My wife turns to me and says "this is the lamest thing ever", I said I agree, but I like it. So there it is, I guess I like it but I find its a little WWE as well. Do these teams really need like a captain and 4 assistant coaches? Does setting up these pairings really require such a serious demeanor as if they are military commanders getting ready for war? Sorry for venting guys, all I can say is: I like it!

I was annoyed as well and had many eye roll moments. The consternation and deep thought antics made it laughable.

best part was Ernie telling Tiger to shut up and play......

There is strategy involved in doing those picks. When we do our local version of the ryder cup, theres 2-3 guys on each side trying to figure out who to to put up against who. The partners for each session are usually predetermined before the pairing session begins. You might have some players that want to go against other players, try to force uncomfortable matchups for your opponents, not give away automatic points yet if you have an opponent you dont think you can beat, you dont want to waste your best players playing that matchup, etc.

Thats a good point and I didnt even think about it, but very true even our clubs ryder cup requires strategy..

I think I just cringe tho when I see TW in his terminator glasses being so dead-ass serious. Then see all the huddling by the coaches mid round. Like Bill Bellichek doesnt do this crap during a superbowl! Lmfao. Its hilarious. I cant, i just cant.

It's just an exhibition that doesn't even include many of the best players in the world. Just some Winter golf to watch for me.

Agree. I guess they are trying to make this into the Ryder Cup but it will never be that.

In this day and age, we don't need two Cup events. Just make the Ryder Cup all-inclusive that way the world's best are showcased and it's US against the world. That's how it plays out anyway.

If you play in Private club Inter-Club team competition, you've played in a watered-down version of the Ryder Cup where each clubs team captain labors over who to pit against who. It's fun...competitive yet social.

I'm looking forward to see if Tiger can break Seve's record for having a golf cart on the most holes at once later today.

Tell her about all the theatrics ya had to go thru with the sells staff pressuring you, Tell her it was like a three ring circus in that store. Tell her ya couldn't make up your mind so you ask another customer what they thought and he differed to his assistant., and all the while she will be admiring the sparkle, gleam, shine, brilliance of the lamest thing ever.

I find the whole presidents cup and ryder cup thing comical...…..Not sure why the US is playing against all these different countries and all these different countries getting so full of themselves when they win......What other sport does this happen where one country plays an all-star team from a bunch of other countries?

I have never taken the Ryder or Presidents Cups too serious. If the US wins or loses, really no big deal to me in the end. I will say, I have enjoyed this cup so far. Quality pressure golf being played by both teams. Really looking forward to today's matches.

The only drama I see Is in the course winning and how badly it can make them look. Yeah, I get it that they are some of the best players in the world, but you don’t see this much crashing ‘n burning at Daytona.

They're exhibitions on the grandest scale....designed to bring nationalism to golf. Nothing to me but putting contests.....boy do they miss Kevin NA. But I'm with you, it reminds me of WWE as well....but I like it! LOL!

These events are money grabs....If they could there would be a third Cup.....the players get to donate to their charities but that's about it.

Then you had Tiger riding around in a cart with a white towel around his neck... like the "General" in Gladiator on a white horse....LOL!

Thank god I was scared Justin Thomas and Tiger Woods were somehow going to airball their high five! It just seemed so fake and forced. But I aint complaining just glad we got golf to watch in the winter?

The players definitely care. Watching them drain long puts for a score in the team event I can tell you now they get alot more fired up and emotional then they do in a single standard pga event. Yesterday they were throwing there arms up getting the crowd so fired up. Even reed throwing it back with his banter.

To us its all a bit of fun. Our team takes on another team, who ever wins is the best for a week and then we all forget about it again for a year. But the players take it very seriously because for once in the year they get to play in a team which is new to them. They get to experience the team side of sports and getting selected onto that *great* team is an honour. With that then comes the pressure of not wanting to be on that losing team or being the one player to cost the team the win.

Look at how many official's an support staff an NFL team has, or an international hockey team or cricket etc. Yes some of the meetings and things are cringe but they also make the event what it is. There are 30 matches over 4 days they need to add in some meetings to break it up, get a debrief from the caps and keep it all flowing.

Also how it teams USA vs the world (except Europe) to bring fans of all nationality together. I would love to see this become a tri series where Europe play internationals also!

I personally think its a great event with some great players who are doing it to keep the fans happy and there pride for the teams is huge to them.

When will we play the one where the US gets to have 10 or 12 countries team up with them?

Come on man you realize we have more than double golfers in the USA than all of International teams combined.

What I can't figure out is why they act like the team captains agonize over every decision and have the hardest jobs in the world............then they do stuff like run Reed/Webb out for three straight days to give the International team 3 easy points. Great work, guys.

But isnt reed captain America? Why is everyone now picking on reeds match play when 3 months ago he was the best match play guy in America? FYI im an Aus who is not a reed fan in anyway.

I love it. But the idea that the coach, Tiger or Ernest has much impact is comical. Every one of the guys playing is a great golfer. Today will be some good golf.

Other than picking pairings and riding around in golf carts, what do “Captains” even do? As i mentioned earlier, at least Zach was responsible for scratching off names from list. And at one point, I think it’s was Freddie who had to cover the mic to keep Tiger from batting out of turn. ?‍♂️
