Talk to me about your DH89

Tree Levino

Recommended Posts

Are these the real deal? How do you like yours? How long has it been in the bag? What setup do you have? Thinking of putting my order in for carbon, deep water, light tuna milling 350g. Very 009ish. Has anybody owned both carbon and stainless? Which feels better? Is the upkeep heavy on the carbon?

Interested in everything and anything!

The DH89 is an outstanding putter, as good as a Cameron 009 in my opinion. Byron doesn't have the marketing Cameron/Titleist does and I am not saying the 009 isn't a terrific putter. It is. I have a DH89 GSS with Long Pipe welded neck at 34 inches. I had gamed it for a couple of rounds before my Byron Morgan Epic Day Long Pipe putter came in. I worked with Byron directly on both of these. The DH89 was based on a friends DH89 Long Pipe I tried on a golf getaway in 2014 in Northeast Ohio, which Byron was also at. There were 12 or 14 of us playing golf over a weekend at a club staying in the cottages on premises. Long story short, Byron and I discussed the putter sitting on the back porch of one of the cottages and started discussing the Epic Day putter as well. I have mine finished in deep water and it feels excellent. Problem is when my Epic Day putter came in my wife asks when the UPS truck shows up with a Byron Morgan putter box, "What's that?" I said, "That the new putter Byron just made for me." She responded, "Byron just made you the 'Blue Tuna' (nickname for the DH89)." I said, "The Blue Tuna is my backup." She said, "The H3LL it is. It's my new putter. I putt better with it than you do!" Believe it or not, she does. LOL. My DH89 is now my wife's putter. LOL

Just like any putter it’s all about shape and what fits your eye and stroke. Its not going to instantly turn you into a great putter but I find myself practicing more which has made my putting better. I bought mine second hand and have thought about ordering a custom but mine is everything I want already except for a naked sole. Mine is stainless.

The DH-89 predates the 009. Story goes, Scotty used to work with Byron and when he left, so did a CAD file or two.

The benefit of a DH-89 is you get exactly what YOU want, down to every spec. I’ve had mine for 4+ years and will never sell. Too personal.

I went with Stainless to now worry about any maintenance.

Enjoy the process.

TThanks all. It's definitely an exciting process. I have owned and loved Scotty putters but the guy... irks me. The marketing machine is strong and it's a shame craftsmen like Byron haven't had the same level of success. However, I think it being a smaller company makes it more appealing as well. I love that I can get it exactly how I'd like and I get to speak directly with the creator. My idea is to order the first one and game it for a while. If I love it, I'll get one with initials or something sentimental in GSS that'll be "permanent".

Would love to see photos of yours if anyone else would like to post

The best part of ordering a putter from Byron is that he works on every putter that goes out. He will attend to even the smallest details if that's what you want. I like rolled top lines and every one of my putters come this way and the rounded top lines are always perfect. No matter what I want, Byron has always accommodated me.

I just sold mine DH89 a few weeks ago, I absolutely loved the look of this putter especially at address. The reason I sold it was because I wish it was a touch heavier, I didn't really want to add 10g or more of lead tape, the other reason was sound and feel, just very firm for my liking. If I was to custom order one I'd do carbon with a mid to deep milling.

346g was the stamp on the head, and if I played it at my proper weight the swing weight would probably be "correct" but I prefer a heavier head regardless even at 35-36".

As for carbon or stainless both can be firm or soft, I'm just kinda wanting a carbon putter because i like the look. Mine was stainless but as mentioned it has a very light mill, almost nothing at all so it was going to be firm regardless. If it was in carbon it might have been a hair softer but still firmer than what I wanted.

If you're in wet conditions often I'd go stainless 100% to avoid rust and maintenance unless you clean and dry your clubs after every round. I'd just get a face milling to reflect the feel you want and Byron can do that.

JS8DN1BGFSCV.jpgI may not have had one as long as these guys but I had one and sold it. Stainless was a little too clicky for me but man thing was a beauty! Still felt good but almost everything I have is carbon and that is my feel. Might be the perfect head shape though, they look downright amazing!! Will have another one probably this year but it will be carbon steel for sure! I say order one up and enjoy it!

Those are all nice, wish the Goodwood has a thicker topline from those pics.

But I will 100% agree with the stainless being clicky, that's one reason I sold mine, if it was a more muted sound I would have kept it.

Don't get me wrong stainless isn't that bad. But the sound is just off to me. Oh the goodwood thinner topline looks good in person but I still think dh89 is perfect from a design perspective.

I'm not against stainless either, I have a mix of stainless and carbon putters. But for whatever reason the DH89 in stainless is just clicky. I'm sure a deeper grind will get rid of that but how deep?

It's more just to let others know, I'm not saying they shouldn't buy if they don't like clicky and want stainless, I'm sure Byron could help them out.

I've owned several DH89's, in GSS, regular stainless, and carbon steel, with a variety of face millings. They all felt reasonably similar to me, i.e. no real difference in feel between stainless and carbon. The face milling has a bigger impact on feel/sound than does the variety of steel, in my opinion. I've owned probably 10 Byron putters over the years, and the best feeling putter of all of them is my 006. Going by conventional wisdom, it doesn't make sense - the 006 is stainless steel, with a very light face milling, and a sound slot. But it has the best feel & sound of any putter I've owned.

DH89 is a fantastic putter - I still have two of them. Both stainless with Rincon necks and site dots - one with a medium face mill and one with a deeper face mill and rolled topline. You can't go wrong with a DH89.

Yeah for sure I'll have another dh89 probably this year but a custom carbon one. I just like pretty plain as you can see from mine above. Byron makes a great looking putter I just need carbon lol

I've had a DH89 with the tuna #4 (light) milling and one with a deep mill. The click doesn't bother me, but I did find the deep mill with a significantly softer feel(sound). As others have said there are other factors more significant than the material such as ball>grip>milling>material, etc. You have to find the ingredient mix you like I guess.

To the OP DH89 is awesome. If you a) want that headshape and b) you want to customize it to the specs and stamps you want, you can't do much better than Byron IMO.
