Talk to me about your DH89

If you know what your specs and preferences are than a DH 89 from Byron is a great choice. I admit to having one and selling it but only because it didn't have my preferences (Round Pipe Flow neck and on the light side 340g) but otherwise the feel was nice. I could have made it work. It was Carbon, deep milled and had the Sound Slot. I purchased it used with no finish (raw) which I don't recommend at all. I sent it out and added the Black OX b4 selling. A plated finish on carbon is best of both worlds or just know you cannot put it away wet. Double the price for Stainless steel never made sense to me.

Copper plates carbon steel is still pretty soft and eliminates concern of rust. With regard to stainless steel, try deep milling to create a softer feel.

Here's what copper plated carbon steel looks like

I love the smooth face (fine mill) on it the feel is, I think the best on any putter I've ever owned. Sound wise it's a muted (soft ) click. I have Byron building a 615 for me currently with the same milling.

Dont want to hijack the thread, but for those who own both, did anyone saw any real difference between a dh89 and a dd201 from lajosi?

i have my dd201 with my daughter’s name on it and IT WILL NEVER LEAVE ME. I just bought a toulon las vegas to see if i could improve my stats with a mallet, but whenever i go in the basement to putt, its the dd201 that goes in my hand!

It all depends on what customizations you ordered - a custom neck, a lot of stampings, hand finishing, and some of the finishes will add time to the build. I've had putters turned around in a month or two, and others take 3-5 months. You can always email him and ask.

I have had a few DH89s... Couple carbons and 1 stainless. The stainless, I was not much a fan of. My first carbon was the Mystic finish and that thing was nice, felt great, wish I still had it. That said, I currently own a Lajosi DD201 Chocolate copper original and I find it to feel much better than the Byrons I have had. Kari's work is unreal IMO and while I appreciate Byron putters, I am fully on the Lajosi train.

What finish did you request? My guess is that the finish is what's holding things up. I've always ordered my Byron's in a glass bead blasted finish that Byron can do at his shop in minutes. But many of the special finishes are done by another shop that specializes in plating, black oxide, PVD, etc. Then Byron can't control the turn around because it's out of his shop. Also, some finishing shops require a minimum number of pieces, so your putter may have to wait until other orders with the same finish come in.

Because I've always gotten a glass blast finish, I've never waited more than a couple of weeks for my Byron's. But I also order them unshafted, ungripped, and unpainted--since I like to do that myself.

Owned 4 and sold 4. 1 carbon flowneck dh89, 1 GSS pipeneck dh89, 1 SS plumbers dh89 and 1 Damascus Bombora. I couldn't gel with any of them.

I think the problem was that I didn't buy direct from Byron with a custom order that suited me, I just bought and traded on here and got unlucky 4 times! Basically I was buying someone else's mistake or misfortune. Some day I will get a custom from BM and I'm sure I will love it. One problem with BM is that you can't try before you buy."Dont want to hijack the thread, but for those who own both, did anyone saw any real difference between a dh89 and a dd201 from lajosi?"

Yes; my Lajosis have always sat, looked and were shaped and felt superb. The distance you see is the distance they go. Very, very intuitive for me.

Both are great. Byron and Kari are two of the best.

Based on the putters I’ve owned, I liked the shape of the DH89 better. They’re really really similar but there’s just a few picky details I liked better on the DH89. From address, each section of the putter just flowed a bit better to my eye

However I’d give the DD201 the slight nod in overall craftsmanship. All of my DH89’s have looked great, but the Lajosi was perfection. Between his bulk Asian market orders and his US customs, I think Byron makes more putters Kari and it sometimes shows in negative ways. Every now and then you see a Byron that looks a bit rushed.

Feel of both putters is great. My DD201 was a bit softer, muted, but I like a bit of a click so I think the DH89 appealed to me a bit more here. Both Byron and Kari can do a variety of face milling though, so this can obviously be tweaked to individual preference.

That first sentence on the last line now has me looking at Kari's options. As much as I loved looking down at my DH89 when i had it that click I couldn't get over even when making nice putts. I tried a few softer balls but the click was still there.

I have both Lajosi putters (DD201 and two Bayzie HSM's) and DH89's - have had and still have multiple of both. There's nothing magical or different about the feel of one vs. another. In my opinion, Lajosi's have more of an industrial look to them, with "sharper lines", while Byrons tend to look a little softer - Byron's generally have a slight handmade look to my eye.

Feel is entirely subjective - I think it all comes down to face milling. I've noticed no difference between carbon and stainless - I had two DH89's with the same specs and face milling, the only difference was one was carbon and the other SS, and I couldn't feel a bit of difference between them. I have two DH89's right now, both stainless with Rincon necks, one with deep water finish and the other with tour satin. The deep water putter has a rolled topline and deep face milling, the other has a medium face mill (not a Tuna mill). The deep water putter definitely feels softer/more muted than the other, but it's not radically different.

As I've said before, the best feeling putter I own is a stainless Byron 006 with a very light face mill and a sound slot - by all rights that putter should feel loud and clicky but it doesn't. It's all subjective and what sounds good (because feel = sound) to each person individually. I originally sold that 006 years ago because I bought my dream putter, a GSS Byron DH89 with a Rincon neck - when I finally got it, I kind of hated it. It looked weird, it didn't sound as good as the 006, but I spent so much on it (GSS was the only option originally for lefties) that I didn't want to admit defeat. Ultimately I moved on and sold it. It didn't sour me on Byron's putters, I've had at least 5 more since then. Today I have two DH89's and the 006, which I was lucky enough to get back. I still hope to be able to get a 620 if he offers them in LH.

Custom putter ordering is a crapshoot, even if you know your specs (and I think I do having been fitted on a SAM PuttLab). It all comes down to sound/feel, and that's very unpredictable.

I totally agree with the last paragraph you wrote. I’ve also found that some putter necks, welds, and/or shaft bends make the putter set up differently behind the ball. This is another crap shoot with not being able to try out a custom putter before you buy it. With that being said, the customs I’ve bought directly from the makers, I’ve kept. I’ve sold off all the other customs I’ve bought from random people along the way.
