The real numbers on the PGATOUR........

Recommended Posts

Do you think that long driving gives a player an advantage or is it hype?.......Small sample serving, first round but the number usually works out the same. Doc Redman -7 average 279 all drives, Scott Stallings -7 285 all drives, Kevin Kisner -7 279 all drives. Bryson DeChambeau 304 average----331 average at the Rocket Mortgage. Cameron Champ is the longest driver on tour with a grand total of two Pga tour wins. these player are not threatening to make any golf course obsolete ....the sky isn't falling....Golf is fine! I'll start to worry when Bryson and Cameron start winning all the tournaments....but I love to see the ball fly!

P.S. Brendon Todd almost won his fourth tournament this year....he average 274 all drives. Whew! that ball goes to far....(sarcasm). Can we stop this hype and nonsense please.

*All numbers is from the PGATOUR. So Practice your wedges and spend some time on the putting greens for success! My opinion of course.

Dustin Johnson won last week playing in the final pairing with Brendon Todd and blasting it 50 yards past him all day...

The Top 5 in the Official World Golf Rankings, and their strokes gained off the tee and strokes gained putting are as follows:

#1 Rory - #4 SG:Tee, #110 SG:Putting

#2 Rahm - #6 SG:Tee, #20 SG:Putting

#3 DJ - #13 SG:Tee, #79 SG:Putting

#4 Thomas - #23 SG:Tee, #95 SG:Putting

#5 Koepka - #19 SG:Tee, #117 SG: Putting

Of the 230 players who have played enough rounds to qualify for SG:Tee and SG:Putting this year, the top 5 in the OWGR are all in the Top 25 off the tee, but 4/5 are outside the Top 75 in putting. So you tell me if you see some correlation...

Does a guy who gets hot with his wedges and putter usually win the tournament each week? Yes. But week-in, week-out, over the long haul of the season, the bombers are going to come out ahead. The numbers bear that out.

Since the reutrn of the PGA bryson is the most under par player. Bryson is using his length to gain a large amount of shots on the field, his biggest issues are he has one bad round of putting, and his chipping and pitching has been awful. His strokes around the green he gives up about 1 shot a round to the average player, hes given up even more to the eventual winners.

On one par 4 yesterday, DeChambeau had 40 yards to the green...easy up and down for birdie. Not only is his distance impressive, but his accuracy too. Sometimes those long off the tee can get pretty wild. Even if he finds the rough, he still has a wedge in his hand while others in the fairway might be hitting 7-irons. DeChambeau is taking the distance thing to a whole other level. He can cover every fairway bunker on the course, and he finds himself hitting a lot of wedges into the greens. I am sure his short game will get better over time.

OK, let's take the first round of 1 tournament where short hitters are leading. Forget about last week when DJ won. Forget like @DLev45 said the top 5 guys are really good in strokes gained driving (long and straight). There's no reason long guys can't also be just as good with the wedge/approach game. In fact since they'll always be closer to the hole anyway, so easier shot. Man, I fell into the trap again. Soon we'll be talking about how strokes gained doesn't make sense. BTW I'm actually fans of all the guys at the top, especially Stallings and Kisner. These are solid players and multiple tournament winners on tour (both 3). Just saying it's just easier for long hitters in the long run. It's a fact. Now everyone get on the Bryson Dechambeau workout train.

The fallacy in OP's argument is that success is based on wins. However, I believe that the determining factor here should be chances to win, rather than wins itself. And I believe that in the long run, those players with more length will tend towards higher up the leader board than those with equal or even better short games but less distance.

I am not sure that Cameron (he does not like Cam) is the longest any more..

You typed “lol”.

Anyway Great logic there champ. That Is just like saying Tiger Woods and I have 15 majors between us. I almost won 0 of those. I’d love to live in your world.

Almost won “his” fourth tournament this year. This could mean Two things.

he has won three and almost won the fourth he payed in. he was won three and almost won his fourth event out of how many he has played in. Either way to almost win your 4th you need a 3rd. Now we won’t even counter your argument that he got well and truly whipped by someone who averages over 300 yards off the tee. I’ll save that one.

Seems to me you will only hear positive and like comments about your statement. Anything negative or against your opinion is wrong and will not be tolerated. I pointed out an anomaly and asked if I missed something and your gave a condescending reply. Hence why I returned serve. Anyway we get it. You can’t hit the long ball and vented your frustration on a public forum with an opinion stating facts and figures and absolutely can’t say you were wrong. Have a nice day Sir.
