Why does no one use Ping i15 driver on tour?

Recommended Posts

Other than Mark Wilson, does anyone else use the Ping i15 driver on tour? I think most guys are going with the Rapture v2, G15 and now the G20? I hit the i15 and the g15 and liked the i15 better (more solid and better ball flight). It is less forgiving but its I dont have trouble finding the sweet spot anyway. Right now I am playing a Rapture v2 and will probably go with the i15 next season.

There have been threads about this before, and the sentiment is usually that it is not workable enough (it's very fade biased and imparts little spin).

I was using an 8* for almost a year, then all of a sudden I couldn't keep from losing it right. I have no idea why (I actually suspect the head as occasionally I could hear a faint rattle) but I replaced it with a G15. I've lost about 10 yards, but am much more accurate. Sadly, when I was hitting it well, it was the best driver I'd ever owned, and I'm not ruling out buying another one in the future.

I just love the G15, (10.5) but if I had to give it up I could be very happy with the I15. (11*) I'm 64, 6 hdcp (for real). I drive the ball about 235-240, straight. The I15 goes right down the pipe as does the G15. G15 is, maybe, 10yds longer. I think those who answered above are correct. when you miss with the I15 it's going to fade. Misshits with G15 are not as pronounced. I tried out the K15 just for fun. For me there would be no question G15 and I15 over the K15. That's suppossed to be the long one, I think. Also, I have hit the V2 and I'd say if you have a G15, I15 or a V2 you're set. Would not want to live on the difference. Pros? I don't know. I do know I saw a G-10 come out in one tournament from under a G20 headcover so...

i hated the I15 more than a punch in the face. If you literally offered to give me a free I15 or punch me in the face i would choose the punch. The best part about the driver was i got really ripped carrying my golf bag when i was playing it, since i had to lug around about 25 extra balls, aswell as a machete to bushwack through the woods and a snakebite kit

Excellent - - that's the kind of no-nosense, straight-from-the-gut review I like! Glad you survived that beast!

Because the driver sucks, that's why :)

Seriously love the original Rapture and the G10, but the i15 was horrible, horrible, horrible. My guess is based on the comments above, there are a lot of people who feel that way about the i15.

Why does the i15 driver "suck" and is "horrible, horrible, horrible"? It's less forgiving than the rapture or G10, but has a way better sweet spot. I would prefer a better sweet spot and workability any day of the week. To me it's all personal preference, but it definitely doesn't suck.

You are correct, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. My comments were my perspective on the i15, and TO ME, the i15 does suck. I do not consider it "workable" at all. I consider it "unforgiving" to the extreme.

As a long time Rapture owner, I put the i15 through its paces at a demo day at my club with Trackman data to back up my subjective feelings. The i15 was worse across the board compared to (at the time) 4 year old Rapture. It did nothing better (launch angle, spin rate, ball speed) and I tried all the shafts they had. (And I could hit draws and cuts without problem with the Rapture.)

On the other hand, when I demoed the Cobra ZL, it was as good as the Rapture statistically and also felt good and sounded good. So I put it in my bag for a couple of weeks and found it to be more forgiving than the Rapture so it has found a place in my bag.

If you like the i15, great. I think it was a huge step back for Ping.

So basically, you guys are saying stay clear of the i15... Was thinking of getting one. I play a Rapture v2 now and its good, but I think the Ping G10 (with the right shaft) is a better driver. Maybe I will just pick one of them up. Anyone have any ideas about what shaft to put in? I was thinking maybe a prolaunch red?

I just wish they would have moved the paint scheme to the G20. The i15 was a GREAT looking driver....

Inexplicably lost it on the fade side even with a good move at times, very penalizing on poor shots but LONG tho...not worth the headache of poor te ball position even with great shafts - and i work the ball more than most so trust me when I say stay clear of this club if you play a stou shaft and work it cuz it listens very little.
