Do you play better with more “player” style irons?

I consider myself a pretty decent iron striker. As you can tell from my signature, I play clubs that most would consider close to “blades”, but I have played pretty much every style of club except a Ping G series iron (just doesn’t fit my eye). I went to these clubs from 714 AP2s and for some reason I seem to feel like I hit better iron shots with blades or MBs than I do CBs or other perimeter weighted clubs. My only hole in one came from an MP-68, and I have owned more Mizuno blades than I’d like to admit.

 

Do any of you feel like you just play a bit better by using these style clubs?

For me it depends on the golf course conditions. On a wet, soft course I could probably play just about any irons I think. But on a dry, hard course I prefer thinner soled irons for picking balls cleanly off of the hard fairways. This year I used my AP2’s in the spring and early summer when courses were softer and it rains more and then I switched to my CB’s mid summer until the end of season when courses are drier and we get less rain. :)

I played 9 holes with my dads clubs the other day, and I really enjoyed it. I play MP32’s with Royal Precision Rifles 6.5 flighted, and he has Ping i3+ with some lighter regular flex shafts. It was amazing how easy I could swing and how easy they were to hit. The offset was strange at first but it was nice not having to work too hard.

I’ve spend a lot of money trying to prove myself wrong, but at this point I’m settled on the fact that I just play better with player’s irons.

I would say so. My distance gapping has been much improved with my Mp-25s compared to my PSIs. This could possibly be down to the fact that my game has improved, but I also think the change in lofts helped a lot. I would hit 7 irons with my PSIs 165 and then out of nowhere hit on 180 (good contact, fairway). I gave up a few yards with my MP-25s and how hit the 7 iron 155-160 but I know that I will definitely hit the ball the distance I want (assuming good contact).

 

It also helps to have the additional spin when playing firm courses and you need to stop the ball on the green with trajectory and spin. You don't notice much of a difference in stopping power when the greens are soft though.

No, no matter what irons I have used and there have been many sets, my scores are about the same.
