Starting a new adventure . . . Minimalist Golf

Interesting read that has value in this thread. The Pitfalls and the Potential of the New MinimalismI play more than half of my round with a half set. I play this way because it's lighter, helps me practice with different clubs and with different shots than I would normally play with a full bag. Ultimately, there's no wrong answer as long as you keep pace.

I used this set up for fun sometimes.

M1 (8.5*), Hybrid (17*), MP-32. (4,6,8,9,PW),

LW (60*), Putter

9 overall , easy Sunday bag carry with no lost on playability and scoring.

@jt2gt That is a nice looking set up. I wanted to look into a Mav Max 3+ but couldn't find one to demo. I happened upon a cheap 2016 M2 driver that I got along with in on the launch monitor and so far is working out well on the course too. So maybe another time for the 3+.

We're going on a Minimalist Adventure who knows were we'll end up:

"Full" 10-Club Bag currently looks like this:

Taylormade BRNR Mini Copper 13.5

Taylormade Sim Max 7w Mitsubishi Diamana F Limited 75S

Titleist 818H1 25* Fuji Atmos Black 9s

Callaway Mavrik Pro 7-PW Project X Rifle Tour Flighted 105 6.0

Vokey SM9 50.08F

Vokey SM9 56.10S

White Hot OG #1

Srixon Z Star/Chrome Soft X

I have a full bag but just recently got some old extras out of storage so I figure I put together a “minimalist” bag for the trunk.

M3 driver

MP33 4-6-8-PW

588 52-56-60

SC Mil-Spec

Might drop the 52 in favor of a slot for a 19* R15. Probably see more adjustments as I actually start playing with this bag and seeing what clubs I actually use in the current set up and what clubs I feel like I’m missing out on.

On to mk3 of my minimalist set. Taking another club out the bag to take me to 8 clubs but trying to find suitable clubs to fill the spaces.

49 wedge

42 blade

35 cavity

All low offset

Lots of research and bargain hunting ahead while stuck inside...

I don't understand the minimalist thing. Is it that you carry your clubs when you play because if it is then join the club. In fact I'd be a lot more impressed by someone who could carry 200 clubs in an Al Czervik bag for 18 holes. If it's that you're playing with a limited set I would say just throw half your clubs in the trunk because doesn't buying a second set of clubs kind of defeat the whole minimalist thing?

Carrying fewer clubs helps prevent hemorrhoids.

Here are the grips of my recently completed half set. L to R, FT-9 driver, rac ht 3 & 6 irons, rac mb 8, Snake Eyes "A3" (?) pw & lw, and a Tuttle putter. It's almost 10° between each club. I used to play with four or five clubs and getting back to minimal just makes more sense to me and is waaaay more fun.

I've been using a minimalist set for 10+ years. For some of us it's the challenge of making one club do the work of two or three clubs. For others, its the joy of carrying your clubs often in a smaller, lighter Sunday style bag. For some it harkens back to when we were younger and learned to play with a smaller half-set. For me, it was picking up the hickory bug which often is played with <10 clubs and then aging into more modern vintage clubs and now with a half set of modern graphite shafts which are easier for a 67 year old 12 handicap to carry in my MacKenize Sunday Walker bag.

For me it's basically whatever gives you the most fun. If you want to play with 5 or 7 or 10 or 14 or whatever - do it and have fun!

follow less than 14 (<14)/ wingtip on instagram, I learned it from them. For me it's a combo of things. The extra light bag with 10 clubs, 3 balls, 4 tees, a ball marker, no range finder, and a yeti with bourbon & Ice. I can walk 54 in a day and not worry about anything, but mostly it's about the shotmaking you have to come up with, 25 yard gaps in the lower clubs mean you gotta make things happen, not just grab the club and hit it. I got into this after purchasing a new set, so I just added a few more clubs and now I have an evens bag for even days or a shorter course and an odds bag for odd days or a longer course. Then when I practice I can use all the clubs in my bag and get longer life out of them with less/ even wear. It's how I learned to play the game. It's about the joy of the game and being outdoors with friends in the sun and warmth. I don't care what I shoot weather is 68 or 86, it's about everything but that. Hitting a high cut 6 iron 180 on one hole and a high draw 6 iron 205 on the next. Its making things work with what I've got. It's not for everyone and that's totally fine. But it works for me. I'm good with a PB&J for lunch!

For me its about always having a set of clubs in my car so I can play Or practice whenever I desire, only having to carry a light bag around so that I don’t get tired / back issues meaning I can play more golf, and forcing myself to stop and think more about course strategy. I also use “player” irons In this to help improve my ball striking and feed back

I only use my full bag in work tournaments / more competitive rounds with my friends. I use the same driver, 5 wood and hybrid in my full bag, add a 3 wood and an extra hybrid, but I use more forgiving irons and wedges ( I even carry a chipper in my full set as I’m not afraid of the mocking I get as I’m now regularly closer to the hole than my friends when chipping around the green).

Just use the clubs that work for you.

Hehe. Love it.

I get the strangest looks when I golf too

I only carry nine clubs and one is a chipper. Deadly from 75yds and in. I also use a side saddle putter.

Driver, 5w, 5h, 6i, 8i, Pw, 60*, chipper(46*), 46” putter

lol

ps best way to practice with a chipper is taking only it and a putter and playing pitch n’ putt
