Need new irons desperately but can’t get fit due to lockdown. Any advice?

I need new irons real bad. I was already missing a 7 iron and now my 6 is broken and 5 head is about to come off the shaft. I’m a 12 handicap, was already planning on getting new irons this summer due to swing improvements and my first set of irons getting old and worn(TaylorMade Rocketballz). I was wanting to get fit for my first time but due to lockdown in NJ nothing is open. Any advice on what I should do? I play 2/3 times per week and to play without my 6-7 iron soon to be 5-7 gets frustrating. Should I pull the trigger and get fit later or wait?

Second swing often has a iron to match a set. I would fix the irons you have and use them when you get a fitting Lesson with your course pro. Good luck.

Like 2Down said, find a replacement 7, re-epoxy the 5 head back on. As for the 6 broken, we'll assume the shaft has snapped and you can get a replacement shaft off ebay. Those TM irons are good clubs and should be good enough until you can get a proper fitting and then you just may find that you really don't need a new-expensive set after all........

Lol I lost my 7 last year and didn’t want to replace It because I wanted new irons. 6 iron just like @RogerinNewZealand said the shaft bent towards the head. Not sure what exactly the stock shaft in those is but when I went to a good fitter last year to get lie angles checked he said the shafts were basically garbage and yeah 85 grams which is why I also want to get new irons. Regular flex/85 gram shafts don’t work for me anymore unlike when I bought them 7 years ago when I was just getting into golf

I'd pick up a used set of what you have and look for other options later.

Ping has an online fitting app that's worth going through. Unless you are short or tall then you very well may fit into standard length irons with standard lies.

If you are good with the weight of your current clubs then look for some shafts at about 100 grams or so.

Taking a guess but I'd say try Mizuno Hot Metal (not the Pro version) or Ping G-series irons would be a good choice. Those are awesome clubs and can be found for great prices on ebay. Worst case, sell them later.

Fitting covers a lot of variables. If you are playing standard length, loft and lie, you can do some low cost experiments.

if you want truly custom fit stuff, wait until after lockdown.

if you want a complete set now, hit the classifieds here or eBay...

you could also try to do a fitting over the phone... I had a good chat with Jason at sub70 golf and am confident in what I’m going to order, but I know my specs pretty well.

I wouldn't go the single iron replacement route as its not worth it $$$ wise. Pick up a cheap set to tide you over and then just flip after you get your new irons.

If you do opt to get a used set of what you have, you'll have almost a full set of heads to experiment with different shafts, shaft lengths loft/lie angles or whatever. It's much harder to test these things on part of your set.

While I’m fairly certain that you won’t take this recommendation, and everyone should be fitted, etc. - Ping G400 Irons 4-PW wSteel Shafts | PGA TOUR Superstore

The 400’s are now (as of today as far as I can tell) no longer produced, and back stock is what will be available. At $500 for the set, they represent the best value in the last several years in irons. If you drive more than ~240 yards in the air, get stiff shafts.

My buddy just got fit for a new set of Pings and has to wait two months for them to come in. I was lucky and was fit and everything was std so the shop had them in stock. Ping has online fitting as does second swing. The wait is going to get longer as more states open and factories get more backed up. I would hate to wait order clubs then wait even longer to get them. Here in Michigan our season is short anyway and have to wait till almost the end of the season would not be good.

Check with your local golf shops about repairs. Some will let you drop off the clubs to a curbside rep for repair and then pick them up later. A reshafted 6i and a re-epoxyed 5i should be quick turn-around.

You could always get a few used sets on the bay from global golf or 2nd swing who offer easy returns if they don’t work out.
