Why do many of you assume just because a person like dj may have failed a drug test conclude that he's an addict? Do you call everyone that has a few drinks a week an alcoholic?
Because he's failed multiple tests and literally every piece of anecdotal evidence involving him goes along the lines of "oh yeah, he's been doing cocaine for years, this isn't surprising"

by golly youre right!

Deaths per user:
Alcohol = 100,000/140,000,000 = .07 % or 70 per 100,000
Cocaine = 1,000/ 12,200,000 = .008 % or 8 per 100,000

Deaths per abuser:
Alcohol = 100,000/18,000,000 = .56 % or 56 per 10,000
Cocaine = 1,000/ 250,000 = .40 % or 40 per 10,000

So even considering abusers, with advantage to alcohol (probably
should be over 1%), cocaine is still healthier.

Hmmm...they just said DJ shot a 61 this week and is playing golf every day. So...that means no rehab...and why then wouldn't he be playing???
Not in rehab. Playing golf but not playing tour. Unannounced suspension despite what tour statement said.

Actually it is a valid discussion. Cocaine can be detected up to 7 days in standard tests and 90 days using more sophisticated analysis. If he does coke once a week, he'd fail even the most basic test. A guy that does it once a week is a chipper, not an addict. Just like a guy that has a few beers a week.

If a person needs a drug including alcohol to get through the day, then they are an addict. No evidence exists for DJ other than he MAY have failed a few drug tests. That doesn't necessarily make him and addict. If you think it does, then your allowing social mores to blind your objectivity.

Why would the Tour care if he uses recreational drugs?
care? they should mount an all out add campaign.

This is beneficial to both of the PGA's major concerns right now.

Pace of play.
and
Getting young (rich and white) people into the game.

Seriously, the PGA's "handling" of this will drive more people away from golf, than it will bring in. - not that i care.

addiction counselor weighing in.. DJ is probably taking some time to get the stuff out of his system, get some clean time (doesn't necessarily mean rehab, maybe a private therapist), and is biding his time until he can return. this is just like NFL players who party hard, smoke pot, etc, but then don't stop even when they risk losing millions of dollars. the risk of consequences doesn't keep people from doing things they shouldn't, hence why even the normal person may drive after a couple drinks, or speeds/texts while driving, or lies to cover something up, etc

and alcohol and cocaine are very similar, just one is legal and one is not. in fact, alcohol is by all means probably more addictive than cocaine in the long run. people do react differently to different substances too

Only DJ knows if he is an addict or an alcoholic for sure. That said, three failed drug tests and two suspensions (allegedly) are some pretty heavy consequences. If he didn't stop after the last one why not? You would think a "normal" coke user would have sufficient cause to stop at that point. Continued use after that in my mind is a red flag. I would think some real evaluation of his relationship with drugs and alcohol is in order, else it's just a matter of time till a repeat.

BTW him playing golf kind of made me laugh. Back in the old days, when Lawrence Taylor was on his first drug/alcohol time out, he said he played golf every day for therapy. Didn't take.

That might be part of the problem. Addicts don't truly buy into their recovery until they understand and admit they are an addict. DJ might not know, or want to acknowledge that he as addict (if he is indeed addicted to drugs/alcohol).

If he is an addict, I hope he is going into this break with an open mind and listening to the people who truly want to help him. He can probably stop for a short time (again, assuming he's an addict) but if he doesn't understand how to manage his life then he could end up back where he was. And as a pro golfer, there are consequences that include not being allowed to play golf.

To use a baseball parallel, even though Andy Pettite used steroids, it seems as though his contrite acknowledgement has kept him out of the conversation when that topic is discussed.

Most would be recused after simplistic peremptory challenge questions.

On the other hand, it is good to have these folks in society. I gives me confidence that success is not that hard to attain in whatever you pursue.
I'm sorry, where did I say that? The question I responded to asked why everyone assumes he's an addict and referenced drinking "a few times a week", which I responded to.

And cocaine and alcohol are different; cocaine is an upper, alcohol is a depressant. Man, some of you people are just begging to start an argument.

Also, while I would agree that third party evidence wouldn't normally mean anything, I think it holds more water when more and more people have the same or a similar story to share. Where there's smoke, there's fire.

I can't assume he's an addict. Robert Downey Jr is an addict and went to prison after getting pulled over on Sunset Blvd with a loaded handgun, heroin, and cocaine. If DJ is an addict, how did he win $4.2 million this season? DJ is playing golf in Idaho and is reportedly close to shooting 59s. Come one people. If DJ is an addict, either he should stay one and continue to be a premier PGA Tour player, or he has the potential to be the best that ever played the game if he quit the partying. He's a young rich dude that likes to party. He's not an addict.
