Nice--- Right up my alley--- Me I would clean them up some and possibly regrip and play them. If they became players for me I would tape off and use spray poly on them to seal but keep the dings in them. Dings add character if you ask me. Also I have always loved red inserts. For me I guess they fit my eye and draw attention to "the Bullseye" I am SUPPOSED to hit

Aren't you supposed to hit em on the screws?  🙂

In the case of his TAs it is between the screws and on the Keyholes it is between the screws too right in the middle of the keyhole. LOL though back in the day I have been known to leave balata in the screw heads. Tee hee hee I never considered myself to be a good ball striker🤪

That's what I thought too.  For an off-brand Mac the grain is quite nice.  The 3-wood is brutal though.  The orientation of the grain is totally off and looks super weird on the face.  I guess I can't complain too much for a whole three bucks.  Haha

I'm with you in regards to just giving it a spray seal. That works for me too. But it would sure be a beauty refinished. I absolutely love a nice horseshoe grain, especially in a driver. Just my 2c worth.

In case you change you mind, I have these decals you can have. I'll never use them.IMG_20220323_143045_kindlephoto-8010897.jpg.f70932fac67e360a3eecea0b6f919d2d.jpg

That's fantastic - thanks!  The decals are (were) a big reason I wasn't going to do a full finish as I didn't want to lose them.  Now I have no good reason not to!  Haha

I'll PM you when I get home from work.

These came from two different sources but they match.

1962 VFQ Tommy Armour 2-9 and 1962 Tommy Armour AT2W woods.

Matching leather grips which I had just treated and seeing them lined up and drying I thought would make a good picture.

Yep, that's exactly what I was thinking.  Tape them off and spray poly.  That way the decals remain intact too.  The scratches and dent don't bother me either - I too like a bit of character.  Sometimes the full treatment is in order but if they're already solid and not particularly collectable then I don't bother.

What parts do you tape odd?

I just picked this up;

Took it out to play 9 last night and it is a great driver.   Higher trajectory than the Macgregors I have...probably due to the graphite shaft.  I hit it 6 times, and hit 5 fairways.  I really like the sound and feel...very solid, not soft, but FIRM...not a crack but a deep THUNK and the ball just goes.

Mizuno Drive Face.jpeg

Mizuno Driver Sole.jpeg

Oh my...that looks so similar to my favourite driver I played as a junior, until it was stolen along with the rest of my clubs. However, before you think I'm accusing you of handling stolen goods, mine was steel-shafted😄. I also pretty sure mine had a shallower face because I used to hit it off the deck, but yours looks too deep for that.

The insert is the same, the black paint is the same (again, not a common Mizuno colour, though they used it for the TP line in Europe sometimes) and the lack of stampings on the toe--usually Mizuno puts the model name there--also seems familiar. On the other hand, I think mine had a butterfly shape sole plate. Not sure. It's been over 30 years since I last saw it, and back then I just played the clubs without thinking too much about them.

Nice blast from the past.

You "Nailed" it..  We always said, you hit that one on the screws.   Today it's more like "you hit that one".    Neither good, bad nor indifferent.  😀   To be able to swing a club is good now days.

Just the neck.  Normally I'd remove the whipping and spray the whole head but I think I'll just cover it with masking tape to keep the poly off.  It's a bit cheesy but if you're careful it usually looks ok.

Thank you I have just started spraying poly on some beat up Laminates.  Not a full refinish but I wanted to a)

make them sturdier for play/practice and b) practice for some MacGregor persimmons.

I had great luck with the first coat on the laminates.  Waiting for coat two but I’ve made two mistakes so far.  I didn’t tape anything off and used semi-gloss.   I think gloss would have looked better.

Its a 2014 reissue of a 1954. Fender went crazy in getting the small details right on those.

I have that a 1956 reissue that is pretty close to the originals as well.

sadly unlike golf clubs I can’t afford vintage Strats.

I added several new classics to my play sets this week. These are the best of the woods. Excellent condition Kenneth Smith 1,2,3,4 and MacGregor 1,3,4. Several other decent woods. Also full sets of Kenneth Smith irons, Wilson Staff blades, and others. Looking forward to playing them.

I always thought it was cool how KS ran the laminations toe to heel as opposed to the standard crown to sole. Very unique.

Very nice. Could you give us a bit more info, e.g. how old are these, what do the soles look like?

Never heard of Ken Smith woods before, are they pretty rare? Beautiful, as are the Mac's

Yep they are sorta rare because they were mainly a custom line hand made and were not mass produced but great quality.

Beautiful.

I see quite a few Kenneth Smith sets come up for sale here in Japan. I would guess that most date from the end of the Seventies and then the Eighties when Japan was enjoying its bubble economy. Most of the the Kenneth Smith sets I see don't appeal to me in terms of aesthetics, and many are chunky-looking laminated heads with weird ferrules.

Occasionally I'll find a good set of persimmons, but I've never seen a Kenneth Smith set as beautiful as yours. I love the fact that the whole head including the face is stained (two of my favourite persimmons are like that), and as mentioned above, the horizontal grain is gorgeous.

Still not a fan of the Kenneth Smith ferrules, but I'm willing to overlook it on this occasion🤩☺️

STU, being from the St. Louis area, we used to see quite a few of them in the bagrooms at the local clubs because Kenneth Smith was based out of Kansas City.  Every set I ever saw was pretty sharp.

Catchy, this will blow your mind but the golf professional I apprenticed under back in the early 80's would order the raw plastic material direct from Kenneth Smith and make his own ferrules!  It was a pretty cool process where he would cut it into long strips and soften it with an acetone and water mixture and then wrap it on the club.  It would look kinda chunky but he would turn it down on a belt and then shine it up with raw acetone at the end and those things were slick!  I wish I could find some raw plastic and try to do it now, myself.  Would love to give it a try and see if I could remember how he did it.

But the other Kenneth Smith ferrules you would see on his irons were those big ol chunky metal ferrules and I agree, they were the ugliest part of the club.

So he was making them from a flat piece of plastic? Interesting process, and probably quite time consuming, right?

Now those metal ferrules you mentioned...those things are indeed nasty. I can only guess they used them to stand out from other clubs at the time.

Ok that is the reason I have never seen but maybe 3 sets of woods and a couple of sets of irons in this neck of the woods. A guy I know down here and I have not seen in a while has a set of the Woods that were his Dad's and they had been perfectly restored and were beautiful

The set of Kenneth Smith’s includes a full set of irons and bullseye style putter. I have included a picture of one of the irons. I have 3-9, 19, and 99. The latter two are a gap wedge(19) and sand wedge (99). I am going to give the irons to one of my best buddies for classic play. There is also an 11 iron which is obviously a chipper.

Yes on the flat strips of plastic.  I wish youtube would have been around back then.  I would have made a video of him doing it and preserved it.  He would just lay it right at the top of the hosel and then just keep wrapping and folding until he had diameter he needed plus a little extra.  Then it was off to the turning belt and a little trimming from a razor blade and the next thing you knew....'Voila!!!
