No new acquistions...?

[Six Pints]

Picked these up the other night from a local Craigslist ad. A few things I'll hang on to but mostly commons that need work. 

There was a nice Spalding with a face insert and rounded sole. I'm hoping I can tweak that one for my hickory play set. 

 

When I take a few photos I'll share what I bought last week... some really good stuff in that group.

I answered a for-sale add for a Par Aide ball washer today and ended up with a marvelous experience. I met an older gentleman, well into his 80s, who had spent a life working on clubs but is no longer able. I bought the ball washer and he asked me if I would take the clubs he has left for free, which I did; sets of PT19W irons, Bobby Jones pyratone irons, Demaret pyratone irons and matching Demaret woods re-shafted with True Tempers, and the coolest PowerBilt ladies putter that rolls balls like a dream. In addition, his wife asked if I would take his homemade deflection board, which I jumped at, and mounted on my irons rack when I got home. It is beautifully made and the red tape line is spot-on stiff. This is much nicer than the my homemade deflection board and will stay out and used.

 

It was great to meet a gentleman like that and I will use his stuff until I'm too old to work on clubs and then try to find a young whipper snapper looking for some tools and keep his board in use. It always comes back to Harvey Penick, doesn't it? If you play golf, you're my friend.

That is a wonderful story!  
One day you will have to make a post about your collection on the wall.  Just from zooming in on the pics looks like you have some great stuff!

Pretty cool find yesterday. Awesome to have a SW but a bummer it’s missing the 6 iron. These sure are purdy.

Same with my set of Frequency Matched Tour Grinds missing the 6.  Mine are also shafted the same.

 

The loss of the 6 iron was massaged by bending the 4 iron 1° weak, 5 iron 2° weak, 7 iron 2° strong and 8 iron 1° strong.  Smoothes out the gap pretty well without worrying about adjusting playing lengths.  Certainly good enough for my purposes of once in a blue moon play.

In what I expect to be the last load in an odd rush of clubs coming in recently, a few projects arrived in the mail yesterday. First, a pile of raw heads if varying shape, at least half of which I'll make into golf clubs...I hope. This lot includes on Ryder Cup driver and sole plate. That one is in good shape, so that should definitely become a functioning club. The rest are mostly Clevelands, and two Lynx 5 woods with aluminum EOM inserts; A few these have issues too big to solve, but half to 1/3 should be good enough to finish.

 

Second is an assortment of Macgregor projects, including a set of 5 screw M75s, a set of 6 screw M75s, an M85 driver, an M33 driver, a Penna 403 driver and two wood, and a Cleveland Jumbo. All need work, two need sole plates, but all will be played again. Now the hunt is on for M75 and an M33 sole plates!

 

Randoms that came my way this week include 10 Neumann straps, about 10 shafts, and some sanding tools.

 

I have so much more work to do then time to do it.

Picked up this set locally today…1958 Hogan Saber’s 2-9, all-original.

Very nice complete set.  I rarely see Hogans of that vintage around here.  The 8 and 9 have surprisingly wide soles for irons of that era.  They look relatively easy to get along with.  Cool find!

Man those Hogan’s are SWEET!!  It pays to keep and eye on Craigslist, FB Marketplace, and other local sites.  Nice find!!

I recently bought three Macgregor M33s, as I loved the look of the heads, and they all had steel shafts (about 75% of my persimmons have carbon shafts).

 

I think the M33s came out in about 1950, and had True Temper E-flex shafts, which I ascertained from some information the seller provided (see below). They've clearly been refinished, as the original black paint has been removed with varying degrees of success. Actually, I rather like the look of the driver, even though about half the black paint seems to be remaining!

 

The shafts are Dynamic S-flex, which should suit me fine, so they have been reshafted at some point. I think the refinish was done later, and whoever did it left the shafts and grips alone, because the grips were Golf Pride Grip-rites in terrible condition.

 

Anyway, I am hoping they hit well, especially the driver and 3w. Wouldn't the original set have included a 2w as well? 

 

Edit: Forgot to add the screen shot of what I think might be the Japanese translation of Kaplan with information on the M33s. Apparently had a True Temper E-flex shaft which was for swingers not hitters.

I don't think I have, either. Also, the driver and 3w have the more common U-shape grain pattern.

 

Edit: sorry, the grain on the driver is more front to back. U-shaped for the 3w. I guess you could get away with a lot when you are finishing the clubs with black paint!

I saw a lot of this in early persimmon hickory from before 1914 WW1. It may have been copied from early beech wood heads where grain shape differed from persimmon. They all split as you would expect. One such I own was a bulldog brassie made by Horace Fulford, pro at Moortown in 1909 to 1914 who won prizes for his craftsmanship.

A question I asked in earlier times on this forum was 'when did it become common practice to cut flitches with grain heading towards the face instead of parallel?' Don't think I got a reply in spite of there being a lot more hickory men on the forum then.

Well…it finally happened. After years of thrifting, I finally found a set (ish) of Mizuno Irons. MP-57 irons with custom steel fiber i95 shafts in stiff flex. I can’t wait to see how terribly I hit these tomorrow. 😂 Hard to pass up Mizuno irons for $23.

Wow!  That might be the thrift store find of the year.   $23 wouldn’t even get you one of those Steelfiber shafts, much less a full set of Mizuno’s with Steelfiber’s.

MP57s are superb. Feel is amazing and easily workable. Never the longest hitting but a belter of a set of irons.

I just got back from the range with them. I am shocked at how well I hit them but of course not shocked at how amazing it felt striking them pure. I brought them along with my Hogan Plus irons to see the difference. I hit the Mizunos more pure, higher, and straighter. I think I got pretty lucky with these. Whoever had these fit must have at least some similar swing characteristics as mine. Only…he was better looking at the wear pattern. LoL
