Let’s add another clean set to the New Acquisitions thread.  A set of Sombreros, Lee Trevino Grind Spalding Top-Flites, new old stock.  I’ve looked for a set of these for three years.

And another stunning set of irons😍

NOS? The only problem with NOS is bringing oneself to hit them. It took me months before I could bring myself round to hitting my NOS Muirfields.

Glad I did, though.

I picked up a set of Wilson Staff Fluid Feel irons today, 2-PW plus matching SW. It also came with Wilson Tour Block 4300 laminated woods in 1,3,4,&5.

They were covered in dirt and dust but had those crappy red iron covers on them and all were in a brown Palmer bag with molded divider holes. I don't normally even look at clubs like that, but the SW was uncovered and I started pulling covers off and noticed they didn't have any damage.

The whole set was $20... and I spent a half hour washing them. Not yet sure what I'll do with them but the grips are starting to crack on a few of the irons...

Great irons, great find, ridiculous price!

As a follow-up to these...

There was also a name band on each shaft and the owner was Roy M. (full name left out). Anyway I googled him and he had passed away in 2010 at the age of 90. So if these are the 1986 model... well you can do the math.  It may explain their limited use?

Yeah, that is always the problem.  Hit them and enjoy them or preserve the value by keeping them NOS.

The Tour Editions were +1/2” from the factory so it made sense to make those into gamers as I need an over length iron,  but I’m not so sure about the LT Grinds.

The LT Grinds are very similar to my 1980 Top-Flite Customs with very little bounce, although the LT’s have a cambered sole while the 80 Customs have a flat sole, so the LT’s should be a bit more playable.

Great pick-up. The Tommy Armours look gorgeous, and the Pings are, well, Pings! I think I see an EYE2 7w in there, which would be a great club to have in the bag for vintage rounds. Ideal rescue club👍

Any of the RH models with graphite shafts?  Wouldn't mind a red dot 1W and a 4W.

another find...totally forgot I had these. I do love PowerBilt's. I'm guessing, based on the black finish, they are '91 version (wish Maltby's had pictures)..the 2 thu 9 have the red band & the same reg# 9995RS, while the PW has "the standard" (not sure how/what that means, except another model in same year???). Don't know much about the TPS series....

  • 2 weeks later...

visited my storage place, looking for some persimmon woods & putters, found this Beauty in a barrel dedicated to beryllium copper....have no idea when it was made....thought even if not persimmon, it's gotta be a classic....

Toney Penna Driver w/a Toney Penna Alda HM-40 shaft (lots of bag blemishes but still quite playable) and a Golf Pride Velvet Cord grip (in a not too bad shape, again, I'm thinkin' playable). Oh yeah, a plain black ferrule with no reg #.

Found these on FB Market Place for 25 bucks.  I think there’s still life left in them.

I believe they are pro model.  I have these shafts in 1960,61,62,63, and 64 clubs.

Can’t pin point the exact year but I like those shafts an awful lot on my other clubs so I’m going to give them a go.

I have a set of Model 86's with a black finish, along with a set of Model 78's with a rosewood style finish, both with the same insert.   I also have a another model 86 driver with the same style insert but it's white over black with a red chevron.  Unfortunately that one has some damage on the face, it's disassembled at the moment and hopefully I will get it restored some time this fall.  According to the Golfworks book the "chevron" inserts date to 1961 and would be pro model.   These are probably my favorite insert style in my collection, they really stand out.

1961 would totally make sense.  I have 1960,64,65, and 66 catalogs.  These are not in there.  Thanks for the info.

again, found this set of irons, 2 thru 9, in storage while looking for something else...MacGregor TP VIP w/66 "above" the triangle near the sole. I couldn't find much info, Maltby's & Kaplan's don't have a listing at all. The only reference I found was in "American Golf Classics, Golf Club Collectors Handbook"...there was a pic, description & the years '65 thru '67. So I'm guessing that the "66" might be the year made. The shafts that still have the banding say "Tourney Action" over "MacGregor & #1 stiffness (whatever that means - stiff?". The grips are Velvet Cord, worn but seem to be playable.

Anyone know anything about these beauties (well, they'll be beauties when I finish cleaning the faces).

I had a bronze Anser 3 for a while. I'm not entirely sure what makes it so different from an Anser or Anser 2. Anser 4 has the short slant neck (I don't know the proper term for that), but the Anser, Anser 2, and Anser 3 all have the plumber's neck, don't they?

Are the blade lengths different from heel to toe?

Edit: Forgot to add that 38" for a putter is crazy! Was the previous owner a Tyrannosaurus Rex?
