Blade users thread (NO DEBATING CLUBHEADS! NO Buy Sell Trade!)

Played my first few bladed rounds ever recently with a set of Titleist 712mb’s I scored on the bay for fun.  Current gamers are G400’s. I have to say that I can definitely see the virtue of improved accuracy and distance control evolving with the short end of the 712’s, but man, the long end is a bit rough.  Pretty sure I could pick my nose with that 4i.

Lotsa fun though.  Love the minimal offset.  Was hitting baby pushes with the short irons to begin with, but shed a tear when an 8i pushed and then drew back for a kick-in.  I think the long irons still have me mentally stymied.  Maybe a combo set in my future?

I think I'll give Texas wedge some reps and see where it goes on the practice green. Rarely see any real advantage under conditions I routinely see but who knows. The Open and Augusta my course is not. The greens are quite fast though.

I rarely hit the putter when I'm more than a pace or two off the green, and it's really dictated by course conditions. If there's any long grass or bumpy ground between my ball and the green, then the putter is not an option.

I use a 3w with a putting stroke if I have a lot of fringe or fairway to get through.  It takes practice to get the distance right but it's no more than practicing chips.  There is very little to go wrong other than misjudging the speed.  I also like it over putting since the 3w loft helps get it going through the fringe better than a putter.

I like this idea. I've been practising the shot a little with my 23* hybrid, which is an easier club to putt with than my 4w or 7w. Not tried it on the course yet, though.

I've done the hybrid or fairway wood chip from time to time, but it never occurred to me as an option during my round over the weekend.  Should have remembered that.

Same with me. Although I've been practising the shot, I have forgotten to actually try it out on the course. In my last two rounds since I started practising the green side hybrid, I've had two or three occasions where I could use it, but I always forgot I have it as an option and chip or Texas Wedge it😔

I've also never been one to putt through the fringe... but lately its been working for me, I think its because its starting to go into our autumn/winter months where courses get hard and fast.

In summertime here its impossible, the grass is too sticky, have to chip or try the 5wood bump n run which I'm useless at 😅

I can understand that. The putter off the green works best here in winter and early spring when the grass is still dormant. This means that lies can be really tight, leaving no margin of error on chips, and also means that the grass is short anyway, so a putter is the safest option.

The worst shot to have in these conditions is from below a bank up to a raised green off a lie that is basically mud (wet hard pan...so, soft pan?)

Really nice looking course, by the way; so different from the courses here which generally thread their way through the mountains.

And through the camera lens, that par three looks a lot longer than 140m.

Even a swing video for you, par 3 15th 9 iron 140m over water, I pushed it slightly landed on the green pin high and spun back into the hazard... great... luckily it was out of the water so I managed to chip and putt for par 😅

Brother @Jonesy that is a very fine swing you got there.  It goes well with your blades.  😁👍

I hear you on that mud pan/soft pan shot, that is never a great situation, putter from there all day or a back foot 8iron 😅

Amazing how the lens changes it but thats the short tee for that hole, directly left and up are the other tee boxes, it can play a terrifying 180m from there. Not fun with wind off the left or into... or into off the left 😂

Seriously you have a very stable and simple swing.  It kind of reminded me of a slower tempo Nick Price with a finish like Ian Poulter.  You pretty much take it straight back and straight through on the same path for back and down swings.

After really looking at it, I saw a just a very small hips movement/drift rearwards just before your takeaway and just an ever so slight cast at the top.  During your pre-shot waggle and towards the end of it, it looked like your hips moved backwards just a hair at just about the same time you started your takeaway.  And then at the top of the swing you might have got just a little too quick and cast it just barely enough to come over the top at impact.  End result of all this was a slight fade but you still made decent contact.

And to be clear, I nitpick these minor points intentionally.  It's really a great swing and a lot can be learned from it.  I certainly am not that stable.  And posting it takes guts.  So thanks for sharing it!

Thanks @DeNinny I do appreciate it! My bad move is a slide to the right off the ball during my takeaway, feel like I really have to make sure my right leg is stable to stop it.

I was battling with the pulls that day for some reason so the push may have been an over-correction 😅

Will definitely keep an eye on it, playing Saturday and have league on Sunday on a tricky coastal course where you cannot be wayward

180m over that lake? Mmm, sounds like fun, especially with a breeze up. I noticed that there don't appear to be that many trees, so the course is quite exposed. Have to love the expanse of sky; just don't get anything like that in Japan, except perhaps in Hokkaido.

It is a good looking swing, but I think more love needs to be given to the Tommy Fleetwood-like choke down on the grip. I could see at least an inch of the grip showing above your left hand. Very Fleetwood.

Been wondering what would happen to my handicap index after my Men's Club event last weekend.  I found out just now.

My 77 has earned me a 6.1 hdcp index.  How wonderful.  LOL

Will be interesting seeing how I play this weekend, have another event coming up Saturday

Adding to this....

I didn't realize the USGA added an adjustment for those who have low number of scores.  I had a 10 after three scores, but it was reduced to 8 thru this adjustment (-2).  My 77 actually would give me a 7.1, but there's a -1 adjustment for only four scores.  Looks like the adjustments are removed once I get 7 scores recorded.  Which should be soon.

Fun with handicapping!  🤔

Well I pulled em apart and put em together 3 times to get em where I wanted. Got em built with the new ferrules and I gotta say, I like em better that the 1957 Version. Very easy to hit and still feel like Miura's should.......Powerful and solid.

Oh man I didn't need to hear that you like them over the 1957 version.  I remember when I bought my second set it was because Miura was getting bought out and I thought the baby blade line was going to die.  Fast forward to today and the line is going strong.  I doubt I'll get the newer version anytime soon but what you said makes me more tempted.

LOL and yeah I can relate to getting them perfect and doing multiple rebuilds.  I've put my fitter to work and rework on both of my sets.  When you spend so much on a set like Miuras I think every detail about them should be just right.

Also amen to them being very easy to hit!  I was paired with an old Korean man last Sunday and he asked about my clubs because he noticed they were small heads and pointed it out.  I told him the small head makes them easy and they are definitely the easiest to hit clubs I've ever played.

It can get messy very quickly from back there, really is a great design and makes the round interesting on the closing stretch. 16 is a short par 4, 17 another long par 3 and 18 is a reachable par 5 but if you go for it it's a 200m carry over water 😅

The course is very exposed, very much a links design but nowhere near a links. I've had 3 club winds there on more than 1 occasion which makes you get very creative...

I'll take the Fleetwood comparison! Just need to start puring it like him 😂 these irons are actually an inch longer than standard and I'm loving it, not sure if it's because if a slight counter balance or if its just a mental thing

It looks like a course that'd be brutal in the wind. A femme fatale of a course: beautiful, but dangerous.

One inch longer than standard? So the PW is over 36 inches? What's the swingweight?

I'm getting a set of irons extended (should be finished today). The SW, P/S, and PW were all 35 inches, which is way to short for me (they're old Mizuno irons). I wanted to get the PW to 36 inches, or even 35.75 inches, but it produced a SW over D6, which was too much out of whack with the rest of the set.

Absolutely brutal but so pure, it's never in bad condition. The par 5 14th is 500m uphill off the men's tees, into the wind I've hit driver - 3 wood - 9iron to just make it there...

I honestly don't have the exact specs but they should be an inch over standard cause they are the same length as my friends irons which are an inch longer, also 2° upright... swingweight I have no idea but they are sledgehammers and I love it, helps with my tempo

Trust me I have been there many times pull them apart and put them back together several times too get them right.  Did 6 different shaft grip combos to get my Santa Fe right--- Now working on a M-6 driver trying to get it right since my beloved Homna G-1 cracked internally or something. Since my broken back is healing up I changed the shaft from a A flex to a regular now trying to get the ball flight adjusted with the adjuster and lead tape placement.

I played a nice, old course in Wakayama. Shirahama country club. We played the day after a typhoon. Blue sky and ocean on a few holes all the way to the moon. Played with my wife. One of the rare rounds before kids.

You are right that a lot of what we get is encapsulated - mountains, trees, a lot of earthworks, not a lot of vistas and open space. I'll be looking for that in the future when I get off the islands.

I messed up my deliveries of iron sets. I meant to have two sets delivered on this Saturday or the next, but the message I sent failed to say that - so everything came today. My wife was home for the first set, the Daiwas. I was out the door before she could say anything and I threw an unopened package of grips by the front door. After that I went to the range and she went to work. Later, a pristine, but uncared for set of Dunlop 601mbs arrived. The shafts are rusted out. The grips immaculate. The heads look like they haven't been hit, but they have rust spots.... Maybe my first set to strip down.

The finish on the 601s is that old man gold hue. I always forget what it is, but it was one of the most expensive options - I've seen it with the Mizuno Super 11, The Bridgestone Proisme, and the Miura first edition MK wedge set I have. I bet there is copper underplate, but at some point, I want to strip one nice set down and have a set of dirty, raw a** irons.

Range session was really good, other than my driver is down 50 yards or so. I hit 4-5 balls with it and the most I could carry it was 220. It was flaring out to the right and high. Might have to get the wrench out and do a little playing around.

Also picked up a Daiwa Staff Bag from the Dan Forsman era off Yahoo auction that's coming - hopefully next Saturday... So I can start organizing that mess you see. I've got a few stashes like that in the house. So, I'm on the look out for a few more. The Maruman staff bag I found last summer is too damn nice to take out of the box... So...

Really like that Daiwa bag.

I'd like to get some classic Marumans or Daiwas, but right now I'm trying to reduce my iron sets. I just gave a set of Mac VIP CBs to a friend, and I'm looking to sell a bunch of other sets. The wife has been grumbling about the number of iron sets lying around, and she has a point.

I do have a couple of persimmons coming in soon, however...😨

I should have bought a bigger house....

When we built the house, I thought a lot about (club) storage and putting. made sure we chose a nice rolling carpet for the upstairs and it has paid dividends. My daughter is developing a putting stroke that a lot of people would envy. Even have her cack handed. A lot of the clubs remain out of sight. She will not notice a set or two, but at some point she has to notice. It's completely unreasonable... Anyway I am gonna check YA to see about another set..

We should plan a get together. A celebration of all things golf. What do you think of getting together in the fall?
