Disaster stories of meeting online golf forum members in person

Only been an online poster for a few seaons; However, I went the extra mile and was curious to meet a group of online forum golf posters. We met at a course 3 hours east of me for a mini/tourney get together (40 or so posters). Anyway, drove all morning to get there in time, and was excited to see who everyone was. Teams and tee times were predetermined before we arrived so everything was in place. Out of the blue 2 posters got in an scuffle on the putting green over some posts they made on a political thread. This escalated and than involved about a dozen posters. I had nothing to do with it, and proceeded to then first tee to go off as a single and skip this mess. Was so upset, drove all that way for a skirmish between online golf posters. From the fifth tee I saw that the skirmish continued, and even witnessed a few squad cars pull up to break it up. A complete disgrace , one of the oraganizers drove out to get me and come back. I told him where he could stick his tourney

 

Upsetting .. Anyone else have catastrophy stories from meeting online golfers?

Really? I thought this site was to bring people together who really love golf and feel like this is an extended family. Not a dysfunctional family but one that cares about each other.

It is sad that guys get together and actually fight over the right way to swing a fricking golf club or whatever.

Wow! And I thought it was bad when I drove 3 hours to get stuck in the last group of a golfing forum meet with a guy who was not ready for a tight/long course, thankfully we were a threesome so that helped speed us up a little but this guy went on to loose at least one ball per hole and often two which I would have been okay with but he insisted on looking for each and everyone in knee deep grass. At the turn I jumped onto the other guys cart in an attempt to speed things along, by the 12th I just didn't care anymore and should have quit and gone home, when we finished everyone else had been gone for over an hour including guys who had dinner in the clubhouse, longest most painful round ever. This was not a GWRX get together.

I could handle that, and awakwardness of getting introduced to "flop shot 2003" real name "Ed". But the fight was over the top; enough said. Just a epic disaster

It was back in 2008, when online forum golf kinda took off. Took a long break from online golf and joined here last year. At the time, it was exciting to see people you chatted with on a busy forum. All was going great, but I heard 2 individuals yelling at each other on the putting green. Than it just escalated in pushing and literally rolling on top of each other like fools . Another Internet player on green said this is all over a political thread on the site. Was unreal, and upsetting .. A fun scramble on a beautiful course turned into a brawl of 10'plus golfers. Im not a fighter type, left that mess and played 18 solo

Too bad a few idiots ruined the experience for you. A lot of us have
made many friends on here we'd like to play some golf with. I guess
that would be different than what you went to. I'm always game to
meet new people but as far as on here I would prefer to play with
people I've gotten to know a little bit already.

At least that way you're meeting people you actually want to meet
and vice versa. Otherwise, it's just little more than a random pairing
you would get going out solo at your local course; seems to me.

I've probably played golf with 40-50 guys from online forums. Like in "real life", 25% I'd never want to play with again, 50% fall into the "they're ok" category and 25%, I'd play with every day.

If there were 2 adjectives I could use to generally describe a large % of the online denizens: Dork City & CHEAP.

Never saw a fight, though.

Interesting. I've met lots of "internet friends" from automotive boards and from WRX and have not met anyone who was more obnoxious in person than they were online. If anything, it seems that most people are nicer when you meet them face to face, because there is no hiding behind a screen. Even the so called "e-thugs" that showed up from car forums conducted themselves decently in person, some actually were the complete opposite in person. As far as WRX members go and playing an actual round of golf with them? I've played 5+ times with various members in the DC/VA/MD area and pretty much all those I've met thus far I'd be willing to play with on a regular basis. In fact, because not many of my friends are that serious about golf, in some cases I'd have a better time with the WRXers I know than some of my friends.
