A little perspective here...

I just sold a set of irons to a guy in the southern portion of the Northwest Territories of Canada. He said it was -37C yesterday morning but it would warm up "a couple of degrees" during the day.

So...while our weather is going to suck over the next week, it could be worse. Happy Friday!

Yeah, and don't forget that winter basically never came this year. Since November, I think we've had maybe 2 periods of a week or longer where it was really crappy weather for golf. We've gotten about as close to zero snow as any winter I can remember (my data set is about 1/5 the size of the Kent Almanac data set, so take that with a grain of salt).

I guess we really can't complain too much. I'm not terribly fond of the snow, so that worked out. :)

Its not so much the snow I'm worried about. We had a couple of "snows" ths year but the ground was so warm it didn't matter. Its that the windchills will be below freezing basically from today until Tuesday, getting down to @ 10* tonight - then snow - then another 3+ days of below zero windchills.

Also blows because the one nice cherry tree we have in our front yard has just started to really bloom. Guessing this weather kills that.

One nice thing - daylight savings this weekend. Sunsets start back around 715/720 or so. Noicceee.

I might be wrong, but I think wind chills are just "people things". They're "feels like". Like if it's 35 out, and the wind blows, the ground and your trees still thinks it's 35. People think it "feels like" 27.

But, right now, ll I'm worried about is what things "play like" on the 18th.

Keeping an eye on this Tuesday action. . .seen 3-5. Seen 1-3. I think Waverly is going to be close to the rain/snow line. Gonna have a better idea as Tuesday gets closer. As the weather lady was saying, even if you get snow, in March, the Sun starts getting high enough in the sky to really do a number on it.

Mmm, doesnt the wind *also* cool down the ground too? Dont know, asking. I know the wind chill is basically a "snapshot" measurement but it still has to have some effect, right? If its 35 out and the wind is blowing 15 mph, it wont be 20* ground temp but I feel like it has to be cooling down the ground as well to some extent especially if its that way for a week.

Ugh. Nothing worse than not having any idea at all in the world what is wrong with you. Woke up last Friday with a stabbing pain just below my right shoulder blade.

It was on and off, and didn't think much about it. Then Monday looked at my ribcage and had a bruise around my right side. Ok, time to go to the doctors.

Tuesday afternoon see my doc. She checks things over and seems to think its my gallbladder gone bad. Get a sonogram scheduled for the following Tuesday.

"But if things get worse, go to the ER." This is the case Wednesday morning. Fever, chills, nausea, cough, even more pain in my back and ribcage. So I go to the ER.

Get checked in. They take my vitals. They try to find a vain...and after 6 tries, they find something that's good enough.

Doc sees me, wants to get a sonogram, so I just wait to get that done.

The counts come back, and everything is in the "normal" range. The the sonogram results come back, and there aren't any gallstones.

What's the issue doc? Why do I feel like this? Why do I have a fever and this pain?

He thinks its a pulled muscle. REALLY? Really.

So he gives a script for muscle relaxers and tells me to come back if things aren't better soon.

Go home Wednesday night after 4 hours in the ER and sleep from 6 to 6, then from 8 to 1, then last night from 8 to 6.

Don't feel a whole lot better at this point. Hopefully this weekend it will pass and I will get back to normal. Just want to feel better soon.

Are you saying a thermometer would perceive 35ºF and a 20mph wind as colder than 35ºF?

I dont' REALLY know either. I just think of wind chill like heat index. It ONLY has to do with human perception of temperature. Again, I think. Yes, you might be correct. It seems liek the wind SHOULD cool off the ground more but I don't know.

moving air is perceived as cooler than standing air. Thus why fans are used when it's hot. The fans don't cool the air, but it's perceived to be cooler than just standing.

I don't think that inanimate objects can ever get colder than the actual air temperature. The wind just reduces the amount of time that it takes for the object to cool to the air temperature.

Option 2 - its below freezing for 14 hours a day, average of 35* for four days - in addition to steady 10-15 mph winds - and then snows

Isnt there a greater chance of the snow sticking around in Option 2?

Whether its temperature or moisture content or...something...I have no knowledge on the subject but have a hard time believing the winds have no affect.

Speaking of subjects I have no knowledge of, ordered a brake replacement kit and new mesh kit for the Clic. Pricing was pretty reasonable and Fabb convinced me that fixing the break was a better option than buying a new one. Jerk.

Speaking of subjects I have no knowledge of, ordered a brake replacement kit and new mesh kit for the Clic. Pricing was pretty reasonable and Fabb convinced me that fixing the break was a better option than buying a new one. Jerk.

But how does the thermometer FEEL about this? No one ever asks its opinion. That's the deeper issue were trying to delve into here. Maybe it wants to come inside where its warm too.

Perhaps moving Sully into some LSD will shed some light on this, I don't think the bong will provide any answers.

By "body" do you mean human body? Or like, the Earth is a "Heavenly Body".

It seems like the wind would affect a penguin.

I just don't know if it affect a tree or grass, or soil, which has moisture in it. Which is the thing DC is asking.

Here's a good way to think about it.

You've got some object, at temperature A. You've got air flowing over it, at a bulk temperature of B. Forced convection means the faster the air flows over the object, the faster the warmer of the two things transfers heat to the cooler thing.

I think there's some nuance to it when you bring humidity into the equation, and talk about the ability for sweat to evaporate.

DC - with that much lead in time, it likely doesn't matter. All other things being equal, the ground temp cools down faster if it's also windy.

See, if we had any brains, we could make an app that would tell you how much wind is blowing, what the temperature is, and what the wind chill is. This information we could then plug into the app to tell people 2 main things:

1) How this will affect the carry distance in the air of your golf ball.

2) How stupid you are to play golf when the wind, temperature and wind chill are bringing the temperature in the 10's and 20's anyway.

Now you could argue that, "Hey, OCGolfRick, that app is called the Weather channel." and that would be true: Except ours would be more blunt, in that the information would always relay back one answer:

"What kind of a man are you! Get out there and play!"
