Where are you playing tomorrow - Chicago (Round2)

Shot even for my league, should have been lower. Partner decided it was a good idea to walk in front of my while I was swinging, ended up topping it 20 yards. Only thing he is contributing is his handicap. Haha

Could've been worse. My partner, a 6 handicap, decided it would be a good idea to play a round of golf at Mistwood and then hop in the car and rush an hour in traffic to make it to our league tee time 3 minutes before we teed off. We ended up 3 over in a scramble and I didn't even tee off last 2 holes because we had to use my partner's drives in order to get to 3 drives used by him.

The good news is I actually played really well for the first time since late June. Still 20 yards shorter on my irons than I was back in June, but no shanks and most everything was hit really pure.

woah woah woah, what kind of vacation are you going on that doesn't involve golf?

That doesn't sound very Arg-like.

Lol. My 2nd great passion, trains. I'll be riding the rails (on Amtrak) to Boston, New Haven, St Albans VT, Gross Point NY, Albany, Toronto, and Detroit. I usually take a 3 or 4 day train trip each year, but this one expanded to 6 days as I kept adding segments. After this trip I will have ridden all but two of the Amtrak long distance routes. I'm trying to ride all the routes, and I've almost reached my goal. I've taken the Empire Builder to Glacier National Park. I've taken the California Zephyr though the Rockies and Sierra Nevadas. I'm taken the City of New Orleans from NO back to Chicago.

I really hate flying. The TSA**hats. The ever changing security protocol. The too narrow seats. The late departures and canceled flights.

I enjoy riding the rails and simply watching the scenery go by. I catch up on some reading, and snap a few pictures. The food is halfway decent, and I wind up gaining a few pounds on these "land cruises". No security hassles. Stations generally convenient to city centers.

I think my buddy's GPS had info on the course.

We took a cart (don't know if you will be), which has a good GPS on it (cart cost is $20, which is deducted from green fee if one walks).

Very walkable course.

Fairway bunkering and angles into fairways/greens make knowing the distances critical at the Preserve (IMO).

Sorry...do not understand this post. You're making vacation and golf sound like mutually exclusive events.

Lol. You do have a valid point. I've been averaging 7 golf trips a season for the past few years. My train trips are a chance to pack light, and skip the hustle of lugging clubs around. I've considered bringing the clubs on a few trips, but one big drawback of train travel is that there are no rental car companies at the train stations. We take it for granted that one can fly into a city, and be on the road in an hour or so. 'Not so much with rail.

My schedule on this trip doesn't really leave a lot of time. Trains arrive late, and leave early the next day. Other than a full day in Toronto, most of my time will be spent looking out of the window of the trains.

I'm imagining there is a train geek forum somewhere on the internet that could benefit greatly from one of Arg's famous trip reports. Maybe with rankings of each leg of the trip?

How many times did you listen to Willie Nelson's "City of New Orleans" while riding the City of New Orleans? I would've just put it on a loop.

Many years ago I pulled out in Kankakee.

In the immortal tone of "Weekend Update" Chevy Chase:

"A frustrated Kankakee could not be reached for comment."

There's forums for everything on the Internet. Will the train one have as much complaining as GolfWRX? Probably. There's also lots of people like Arg. My dad was working on the Canadian National Rail purchase of the Elgin Joliet and Eastern railroad and then on the high-speed rail project from Chicago to St. Louis. The people he worked with only took the train to travel. They had the following opinions:

1. Omaha is their favorite place to visit (home of the Union Pacific, baby!)

2. The Illinois Railway Museum is their favorite tourist attraction in the area

3. Planes are for suckers

I will say that the Golden Spike in Promentory Point, Utah is really cool. It's in the middle of nowhere but it's cool.

Does anyone ever play Makray? I never see it on this forum.

I played it a few seasons ago. Nice course. It has a few too many short holes that take driver out of your hands, but otherwise it was very playable. A bit overpriced, but not terribly so. I'd say it was worth a visit.
