I will do a quick write up soon on my first impressions. All I can say is the 716 CBs are legit.

I've heard good things about the new CB"s. I always felt the 714 CB's were an afterthought by Titleist but the 716's seem like a winner.

That's exactly how I felt when comparing the 714 line and eventually went with the AP2. These are much improved all around in forgiveness especially.

Sounds good. I really like the way the Ap2's look as well. Such a great iron IMO. Look forward to hearing more feedback.

Initial thoughts:

When the 716 line came out I really thought I was going to venture off and get the newer set of AP2s. I have been really happy with my set of 714's and consider them the 2nd best set of 2014 right behind the RSI TP. Until I looked at some of the initial data with the 716 lines and noticed some players had an increase of launch and spin in the long irons with the CBs. With the added forgiveness I thought I would give them a shot. Didn't demo them really any longer than a few swings in store. The point I am at with my game now is I didn't want to sacrifice any forgiveness in the long irons but wanted something a little a little more workable in the short irons. Out of the box and in the bag I thought initially they looked a little boring, but at address they are carved out well. Then it dawned on me my favorite set of blades were the 681s and these reminded me of them at address. Here are some pics vs the 714 AP2

I felt like I was going to already replace the 4 iron. It seemed the 4 iron was smaller than the AP2 but the 5, 6 irons seemed a little smaller in size but not by very minuscule. I was already thinking 4 iron T-MB.

Then I had my first range session with them. Again my main concern is the forgiveness in the long irons and I was taking a chance vs the AP2. After my first range session with them all I can say is with the changes to the CB they seem to be as forgiving in the long irons but with even more launch and spin. Not sure if they launch is due to the AMT shafts or not but I was really impressed and hit a series of shot where I kind of chuckled to myself and thought wow they did a great job with this club. I was hitting into a stiff headwind so it was hard to judge distance (range balls) but so far I like what I see and will try and play Monday to see how they react on the course ect. They have the leading edge grind down so I want to see how they react through the turf. So far so good, excellent job by Titleist. Side note I am usually a 2* flat kind of guy and these seem like they came flat out of the box. I wouldn't be surprised if the lofts and lies are off due to quality control. Looking forward to testing more, but all things point to a club that feels soft at impact, just as forgiving as the AP2 but with a higher ball flight and more spin. A win win for me.

I received a Vapor Pro from the Oven, 3 wedges from MT, a custom 001 Prototype TW from Dave Franklin on my visit. The Vapor Pro ended up being a really bad fit for me when I got home. I will never do another fitting in 30* weather. That driver was the worst setup for me after I started testing other drivers. The driver is long gone. I am still on one of three wedges from MT. The 001 TW is going no where. I love the putter!

Nippon 125x were in my TPs. I loved that shaft as it wasn't as harsh as the DGx100 yet had a great feel to them and a higher flight. I had the Vapor Pro and PC prior to the TPs. Didn't care for the Vapors. Loved the TPs and starting to love the CBs.

Thanks Dre.....and due to your pics of CB 2i , I had to see them in person! Magnificent they are......someone had the magic touch to carve the back of a 680.mb eerrrrrrr 716MB add the weight pads from my favorite irons of the past (990's) and bling'em!

Will demo one this week but should be in before X-mas.....

I got a chance to play yesterday using the CBs. These clubs are very workable. What a difference in feel vs the AP2. I almost forgot how a forged club feels. The conditions were very windy. I had 4 layers on and looked at my phone and it showed winds 20 mph with gusts over 30 mph. It was so bad I had to hit stinger type drives off the tee because a normal driver would go backwards on me. Great for downwind though :taunt: . I thought for a second it was the Titleist prototype ball I was testing that was spinning so much but even after switching to a Nike RZN black balls were spinning. The only draw back is that it seems the CB seem to spin a lot for me. But these were conditions I don't normally see and have only payed in one other time in all these years. So it is too hard to tell. But hitting knockdowns into the wind were spinning a lot. I wont be able to hit the course until after Thanksgiving, but I am not too worried about what I was experiencing on the course yesterday. My shots down wind were legit though with these irons. My best shot was into a crosswind on a Par 5. Hit 5iron into an uphill green from 193 to 20 feet and made the eagle. I had to hit a 9 iron and work it around a tree on one hole and did it with ease. Something I was missing with the AP2. AP2 is more of a point and shoot iron for me. I shot 77 for the day. I am really anxious to play in normal conditions with these clubs because I think the whole over spinning thing was just due to the conditions.

Side not the test ball for Titleist... not sure what it is yet. It performed really well in the cold (it was 46*) and good enough in the wind. Tons of greenside spin. I backed up a few balls with my 60 on short pitches. Performs like a Prov 1 but is more durable.

Thanks Dre for the initial on course review. I always feel it is good experience to see how equipment performs in bad conditions, as well as good/normal conditions, to really help differentiate if I really like it. That being said, 20mph-30mph wind had to be fun...

Thanks again for the review. The ball sounds really interesting.

 • 2 weeks later...

Just got back from vacation and played my 2nd round with the 716CB.

Really enjoy the profound feel of these over the AP2. There is a little bit of distance loss of off centered hits. Also these launch a lot higher. Distance is hard to tell because the temps have dropped so much. They might be a little shorter but only a few yards. Toying with the idea of getting a 3 iron T-MB. We will see.

Update:

I am really impressed with the flight in the CBs and the forgiveness. I have never hit 4 irons as high as I hit these. They look like 7 irons in the air. The forgiveness is excellent. I'm considering adding a 3 iron back in the mix for the flight alone. Now if I can just find more time to get out on the course.

The only time I ever got any contact from Nike is when I was getting the Engage wedges. Plumb the head guy who decides what comes to market in the short game called me and had a pre release conversation with me per say... Last and only time I ever heard from him or Nike in Oregon. I think you posted something about it being a different division vs the Oven. I agree.

So nice I don't want to lose them lol
So Rory going to be playing the platinum this year?
Not sure. My guess would be the black. The star is the platinum right? I forget
You are correct. I saw his autograph and thought you got them from him. But then I read that you bought them, so I'm guessing everyone got that from purchasing the protos.

Hey man,

First and foremost the new sticks are beautiful! love them so much im switching from the 714ap2's to the 716cb's (5-PW) myself. Also put in an order for the
T-MB 4i as well as a T-MB 2i (1* strong) for a driving iron. Having already gone from ap2's to the cb's, what do you feel the cb's do better than the ap2's? is it just more workability? better feel? better flight characteristics? more spin? just curious what id be looking forward to.

They just all around out perform them in every way. They are a higher launching and a tad more forgiving than the 714 AP2. They also spin more which is my only concern. The weather in my area has drastically dropped so it's hard to gage distance but my guess is they are right in line distance wise. All around just a way better choice for my game. I'm changing a few things in my swing and have hit some all over the face and they shoot right out of the window I like to see even on miss hits. Biggest thing I like vs AP2 is the distance control consistently outperforms the AP2. No more "hot" shots that I used to get sometimes with the AP2.

I was thinking of going 3 iron T-MB just because the ho in me says so, but I could also go 3 iron CB and be fine with that too because of the added forgiveness and increased flight.

Do you think the added spin is shaft related or the clubhead design themselves?

Can you compare the 716 CB's to the Vapor PC's or Pro's?
