Fox Broadcast - US Open

Watching tonight but was hoping there would be some graphics along these lines. If there is anything that is a perfect setting for innovation in a broadcast, it's golf. So much more info available to be shared that we never see.

There is some really good stuff and here and some good potential...


They have hit a home run with the wide angle shots and some of the other techniques to capture the elevation and the overall size of the property.

Pro Tracer is a GolfWRX'er dream. If they have get clubhead speed, ball speed, spin rates with it, we all going to be like crack addicts.

The yardage to the pin graphic is pretty cool.

The afternoon/evening crew seems to be more polished and calm. Weiskopf, Fleish, and Faxon are pretty darn good and have huge upside. The British bloke is on the right track. This crew seems to have cut the chatter back compared to the frat party this morning.

Having Gil Hanse there is pretty genius. They probably should have had some taped pieces of him on the course explaining some of the cooler aspects of the layout.

At least on FSN1, the commercials seem to not be overwhelming. It feels like a golf tourney with some intermittent commercial rather than commercials with an intermittent golf tournament.

The base layer is there, they just need to reevaluate some of the execution. Many mistakes are basic and should be easy to fix.

I think the course looks pathetic. Nothing wrong with green.

The broadcast is ok but you can tell they haven't worked together very long.

I've only been able to watch the last couple hours of the US Open, & it is boring. The course is ugly, the bunkers are gray, and I do not enjoy listening to Tom Weiskopf at all, nor Greg Norman. I doubt that I'll be glued to the TV for this one. No telling who'll be announcing over the weekend.....but if it's Jim Nantz & Nick Faldo, I know the mute button will get lots of use.

Agreed on all accounts. I didn't think the course would look this bad or the coverage would be this bad, actually not sure which is worse haha

I am usually very hard on golf coverage. Fox Sports is doing an incredible job. I don't really care much about the commentating either way as I haven't listened to much of it but they have shown a lot of golf, the different pro tracers and wide shots are great. Oh and there is no Rick Reilly or Jimmy Roberts doing 15 minute puff pieces. I give Fox a 10/10 so far.

I'm actually kind of enjoying the fox coverage. I like the use of protracer on most tee shots - something all networks should be doing. I like the drone footage. The announcers are a little bland but who cares. Plus getting to watch it after getting home from work is awesome.

The camera work is very good. I'm enjoying it. I don't give the announcers much thought, so no problem with them.

The course is refreshing compared to most PGA Tour venues.

Wow. Walking in front of a live camera and then when the interactive map doesn't work, I love the look back over the shoulder and huge shrug. Classy stuff. Also, can they not get some female analysts with pleasant voices? Not that the men are much better. O'Donoghue's Irish accent is the only half way pleasant one on there. Sorry, but count me in the camp that thinks the course us ugly right now. I don't mind watching a wind-blown British Open on some Scottish moor once a year, but keep it away from my U.S. Open. Oakmont can't get here soon enough.

One thing I like about the distance to pin is how realistic it is. Saw Rickie hit 7 iron from 168 out and phil hitting 8 iron from 165. I couldn't stand before when they would announce something ridiculous like 195 yards...oh just a wedge, when really the distance was probably more like 145 and really was a wedge. You can even see the driveable par 4 rated at 312 yards but the distance to pin was something like 257 and players were using driver.

Ok, say what you want about certain shortcomings of the coverage. I'll say this much for FOX: [b]They're showing a ton of shots without a lot of interruptions. I like that part![/b]

This EA Tischner guy using the interactive screen has got to be one of the most painful things I've ever watched. Amazingly bad coverage from a major championship. I bet the nbc and cbs guys are just laughing their butts off.
