Titleist 975's....?

Recommended Posts

The 975D was my first driver. IIRC it came with an EI-70 shaft.

One of my favorite "old' Titleist drivers was the 905R. Had mine in a V2 shaft.

I thought some of you might like to know that this thread has been responsible a fair share of experimenting... since this thread's inception i've picked up :

  • 975D 9.5°- S prolite 35
  • 975D 8.5° - S prolite 35
  • 975D 9.5 - S EI 70
  • 983K 9.5° S speeder
  • 983E 9.5° S Speeder

and finally my lastest creation a 975D with a DG X100....

Beautiful! The shape and proportion for a driver is just about perfect IMO. Did you do the refinish yourself, fluffy?

My problem is LOFT -- Lack of friggin' talent

Boys, I have said it before...976R.. The better choice!

It's not like I need any encouragement, no doubt I'll head down that path soon enough. Does the 976 play similar to the 975's in terms of loft??

As far as loft goes, I can tell no difference. Workability is major. Up, down, cut, draw, all more defined than 975D. But, smaller head(think m85/75), keep ball in middle of club head. If your swing needs help, no 976 for you!

Thanks that sounds like fun!

Good job. Is that a wee bit of dowelling to cap the bore through where you've gone with steel? Nice touch.

As regards the shafts you've got, I love the 975 with steel. Never hit the Prolite, but had the Titleist Speeder shaft in a 5 wood and did not like the feel. V2 much more to my taste and I liked the 975D well enough with EI70. The issue I have with graphite shafts in those clubs is that those long bore-through hosels can be a pain if you want to swap graphite shafts in and out whilst saving shafts.

If you want to experiment with different graphite shafts in those heads, then I think installing a short shaft tip as a plug, shortening the actual hosel insertion depth to a more standard length might be the way to go, provided you know how the shaft tips you're installing have been trimmed. Another reason why I prefer steel in those clubs.

Steve I’ve got a 976 / DG R300 here that you might like to check out. Neat head but too soft for me ...

J

Oh, I like he sound of that...

...yeah was advertised as a Stiff shaft. All factory original so thought i'd leave it as is ...... for now.

Here's useful link I stumbled upon too... http://web.archive.org/web/19990501210311/http://www.titleist.com:80/clubs/976R.htm

I just acquired one of these. It’s a little bigger than my 975D (which I love) and apparently it’s built to promote a fade. Is that right?

Does anyone know anything more about this model?

Steve you are correct on the L-FE being fade-biased. I loved that club and I’m not sure I’ve hit any driver better since I went away from it, you won’t be disappointed to put it into play!

The L-FE was designed with an open FA. I have several (7.5* to 10.5*) which I played for years before adjustables came along. Had a malfunction while warming up for a scramble this past spring and had to fall back on my 8.5* L-FE with GD YS 8.1 S flex which happened to be in my trunk (good thing!). Needless to say, I still had a good day driving!!

Did you ever get a chance to compare the L-FE to the 983E ?

The head size is said to be 350cc and the COR (spring effect off the face) at .825, where the 975D is .815 and 975J .820

exactly why I did mine with a rifle shaft.

I'd be surprised if a 975D is anywhere near .815 COR. The TiSI was the driver that caused the ruckus about COR, and helped spawn the rule; if memory serves, it was .813 or so. I've never heard the 975D described as "hot." :)

Cwebb, I played both and preferred the L-FE. Mainly it was something about the head shape that just seemed “right” with it compared to the 983E. Sorry not a very good explanation I know ?
