Stupidest Ever Name For a Golf Club

Gary Gutful

Recommended Posts

As a club builder I'd be remiss if i didn't mention a GEM of a club name released by golfworks a few years ago. It was an iron set released under their C.E.R brand and the model name was the VX

Yes, that's right kids, it's the CERVX.

Callaway XR Pro Attas Tour SPX X
Taylormade Tour issue 15* V Steel 3 wood
Hybrid undecided
Cobra Amp Cell Pro's (All MB) 4-GW Project X Rifle 6.0

Sumo. Easily the worst. I mean does that word conjure any image other than a massively overweight dude in a thong trying to push another massively over weight dude in a thong out of a circle. Its a completely absurd name for a golf club. Sasquatch is just as bad. Maybe worse actually. At least Sumo's are a real thing. If you're gonna go with big foot as inspiration, why not the yeti? Or fairy's? or the skunk ape? Maybe give a nod to the chupacabra for the next release cycle. Or Aliens or ghosts or Santa Claus. Holy Jeebus, they called a golf club Sasquatch!!!!

Rocketballz is terrible there's no doubt. But at least it's relevant to the game and not exclusively so to whack job yahoo's making crazy noises in the woods hoping for a response from something that is not there. Sasquatch fellas, they named it Sasquatch. Sasquatch! We talkin bout big foot! Big foot, Sasquatch! Sasquatch?

Personally find recent Taylormade and Callaway as the worst offenders, with honorable mention to older Ping and Nike. Never could get with the Diablo, RAZR Hawk, etc. And come on, Zing or Pal or My Day (excellent putters though!)

Also not mentioned, but Aldila has to take the cake for shaft names. Habanero, Voodoo, etc.

Tough one... except for Rocketballz. That has to be the top of the list. They should have just combined the Rocketballz and Speedblades and made a Speedballz.
[/quote]

I think mixing cocaine and heroin together was also called a speedball. I mean I totally heard it said once in a bar, yeah yeah, that's the ticket.

Sorry OP, but the new Ping driver is going to be a G series, but has "dragonfly" design principles. But good thread nonetheless.

Hogan Fort Worth for me.

My favourite name was "The Controller". Remember those wonderful ads?

"300yds to the pin? Easy with The Controller! Stuck behind a tree? Easy with The Controller! Ball stuck in the bunker? Easy with The Controller! And we don't just give you the golf club!! No - we give you a free stand bag, five fountain pens with your initials on, a 100 sq.ft plot of land in the Rockie Mountains, a quantity of state-of-the-art tractor parts............."

"King Cobra" has always made me think of a knock-off of Cobra, just to simpleminded of a name for them to slap on their products. I personally didn't even know they were the same company 15 years ago, I literally thought King Cobra was a knock off brand of Cobra, seeing a driver in my cousins bag labeled King cobra, to me was right in the same group as "Ram"....

No knocking cobra, I am a big ACP fan, but even Fly-Z doesn't seem to intriguing when speaking of a higher end iron. Would have continued with "amp cell/Pro"....

I actually thought "Covert" wasn't a terrible name for a club. What WAS terrible was the club itself.

I probably wasn't clear about that but yes, having read the thread about the Ping Driver I did pick that up.

I still have a couple "Controllers" in the bag, believe it or not. Never did receive the land deeds or tractor parts though.
