I see the problem on tour. But what really irks me is it carrying over to the weekend warriors, myself included. Watching an amateur take forever and then shanking one in the woods, only to walk back to his/her bag and get another ball to repeat the process again is brutal. I can walk a 7,000 yard course in 3 hours max and I am by no means anything more than a hacker. But when I have to bypass a complete hole to get by two jokers with backwards hats, jeans, 4 towels hanging off a bag of $2,000 clubs they bought to keep up with Golfwrx'rs, and a sack of mojo balls just to complete my round in less than 5 hours, its gotten out of hand.

It would be one thing if he was on the top of the leader board and winning tournaments but he isn't so that's what makes it even worst.

As soon as Loupe steps on the course, charge him a 5 stroke penalty. The tour needs to have harsher penalties than just a stroke or a minimal fine. Do something that will affect their chance of winning a tournament is the only way slow players will be proactive in changing their routine/pace.

Again I've stated one of these 2 things before

How slow is to too slow . Very few people in here have thrown out an actual number other then it needs to change
How long should rounds be ? What if you need a rules official does that count against your time . So many variables it's hard for the PGA to actually want to do something.

Not too mention the slower the waves get , the more time and $ will be spent on concessions and food inside the ropes . And it's not like people stop watching golf

They still have a 4 hour timeslot that shows 140 on TR/F and 70 on S/S. Only time you notice the slowness really kick in is when guys start grinding at the end for the win .

Nice example here of the goth phenomenon.

Even the person who was once a goth, looks back on pics/vids of themselves and thinks - "what was wrong with me".

It should be the goal of every person who loves the game to stamp out this type of play.

A montage of Matt jones should be shown to every person who gets their tour card and be told this is what's expected of you on tour. In Australia watching the PGA I think in the second round when jones was leading we were getting cuts from the camera to his shot when he was in his follow through because he was to quick for them. Too quick for a major championship = normal pace for a weekend hacker

That's what I notice too. I think these types of guys might have something else going on. It's like an OCD thing, either he feels like a compulsion to go though all that, or something in his PSR feels slightly off and he has to get it just right. I don't think it's always as simple as them being inconsiderate. Maybe they should get a two stoke penalty and an Rx for Paxil :)

How slow is too slow? Approach ball, read yardage, toss grass for wind direction, select club, hit damn ball. 40 seconds at the most! Any longer is too slow!

Right but golf is a game of numbers and clear rules . You can't just decide too slow is too slow and not have a background to punish these guys . Btw I've been told I'm too fast of a player not too slow but slow play / fast play issue can't be grey . Has to be black and white . Like having to be virtually certain your ball crossed a hazard not oh yeah it went I'm pretty sure .
That's why I asked how slow is too slow . The pga tour should establish a number and if they can't , they shouldn't be able to penalize slow play

That's because you almost never see the full routine, they'll just switch over to him when he's actually ready to hit. There was a video somewhere in this thread of him going through the full pre-shot routine and it is painful.

I agree. I was at the Farmers Insurance Open and was following Keegans group and his routine is long. Once he is over the ball there is no hesitation but getting there is ridiculous. They say he is working on shortening it but it didnt seem that way to me.

A bit of a tangent, I was flipping through Steve Williams' book at the local bookstore and came across a section where he called out Kevin Na in the scorer's tent and made a point to tell the players in the group beforehand (Adam Scott and Chris Kirk) to stick around.

I like Steve and all (being a kiwi and all and like that he seems to call it like it is) but I don't know if it really was his place to be calling out another player.

45 seconds is a REALLY long time to get a shot off. For the non-pro, this is a huge problem at the local CC.

That being said, it's their job. Not only that, but sports is as much a mind game as it is a skills game. If playing intentionally slow is messing with your opponent's psyche, well, you are trying to win. If these pros are playing with someone who they know is seething because of the slow play, I would assume they would play more slowly just to mess with them. The goal is to win, not be liked by the person you're trying to beat. Yes, golf is a gentlemen's sport, but when it's about the millions of dollars being won, I can see how this can be part of a strategy.

If the limit is 45 seconds, but the PGA isn't enforcing that limit, that's on them. They need to get with the program.
