This article was linked in (yet another) slow play themed thread. I will link it again just as a reminder that the golf world has been hashing this over for the past 50 years. Maybe in another 50 years the whole slow play problem will be solved.

For myself, I have simply surrendered to slow play. If I'm waiting, gear down. If not, great -- move on.

It's a bit of a curse, really, being a faster player. Slow players never have to wait. Fast players always have to wait. I'm happier playing now that I just don't care about pace.

@0:48 - "Slow play is an epidemic out here."

If you listen closely, you can also hear the announcers trying to not burst out laughing.

Nothing personal, this is just an observation of his PSR ...

Obviously it works for him, as he's playing on Tour, but it just makes me cringe to watch players like this. Imagine your weekly playing partner taking this much time.. Just freaking step up and hit the ball already!

I agree this is hard to watch! hit the dam ball!

This is a bit of a segue, but I see a number of players who don't do anything until the other guy has hit, including figuring out the yardage.

Yup, its a too common occurence that doesnt make sense.I play ready golf even in events. At tourneys rules officials dont put groups on the clock anymore they time individual players which is good. I played a practice round before a mini tour event in 3 hours flat walking and had time to canvas every part of the course i needed to and hit 8-10 shots around every green. The fellow pro who asked to join me prior said hes never played a practice round in under 4:45 and didnt know what to do with himself now that he had the extra time.I actually apologized for rushing him and he said no I didnt rush him. He was shocked he could play that high quality golf in less time. He has now adopted to play quicker because he claims it lessens how much he thinks on the course. I dont mind taking extra time around or on the green but guys who have to have their caddies pace off 58 yard shots need to be lobotomized

I am surprised ready golf isn't encouraged more at the professional level and not only as described above. For example, if someone is looking for his ball...even if he is away...the other player(s) should just go ahead and play (if they aren't helping the gallery look for the ball).

I bet women love his foreplay tho.

Yeah but the problem is that it's 2am and he hasn't moved on yet...

Its definitely like that in mini tour events. its not match play so it really doesnt matter unless somebody objects but that literally never happens. Waiting for rulings or looking for balls its a no brainer

Lots of truth here. I also think Andrew Loupe's pre shot routine is not an issue, considering he is seldom on TV, especially during the weekend broadcasts.

Jason Day is another story. He gets lots of airtime. I could only imagine the horrors if everyone at my club were to adopt his painful pre shot routine (visualization and all).

Ugghh....

i went to Valspar last saturday and then API yesterday and the pace of play on tour is an absolute joke. Yesterday i followed Rory and Lucas Glover a bit on the back 9 and the difference between the two was astronomical. At one point on 16, Glover took so long to hit his ball (from the fairway mind you) that Rory looked back at him from the rough three different times wondering what he was doing. Mind you that's looking back, then waiting 15-20 seconds and then looking back again, repeat. After Glover finally went it took Rory 10 seconds to line up the shot, get over the ball and pull the trigger.

Somethings gotta give, the TOUR needs to do something because multiple groups yesterday had hole to hole and half gaps between them for no reason.

They may not be able to play like JD, but this is the one thing they can emulate. :-)

Not sure if it was mentioned but that's definitely not the worst.

Kevin Na was really bad at one point. He would swing full speed right OVER the ball and take like 2 full minutes

I think at that point Kevin was petrified to make a swing. He was so discombobulated.

The Tour TALKS about pace of play, but that's it. They will never do anything about it. The LPGA, on the other hand, will.

I thought they do put groups on the clock? I think really it should be like the oscars, except the music starts playing in a earpiece they wear whenever it goes over 40 seconds after the player arrives in the vicinity of his ball. Maybe throw a couple shocks in the grips as they are trying to hit. With all the shot tracking technology out there now I'm pretty sure they can automate this.

I once watched Kevin Na stand over the ball for 45 secs, rips it right down the middle and some guy in the crowd shouts "FINALLY!"

Na turned around and spat back "It's a lot harder than it looks."

So yeah, that.

To Kevin's credit - and I'm not a big fan - he has gotten better to the point that he's now just deliberate (which I still find frustrating). But more importantly he didn't want to be that slow. He did want to get better which he has, even if not as much to my liking. But Matt Jones and Sneds would have a hard time keeping up with me.

I agree. I was at the Farmers Insurance Open and was following Keegans group and his routine is long. Once he is over the ball there is no hesitation but getting there is ridiculous. They say he is working on shortening it but it didnt seem that way to me.

I followed Keegan, John Curran, and B. Steele during a practice round at Silverado and they were flying along. None of this BS at all. He doesn't have to do it. It must be a "nervous" problem.

  • 3 weeks later...

Part of the problem, and maybe what needs to be explained to guys that play like this, is that at a basic level it's incredibly selfish. If you're going to take this kind of time on every single shot, you're basically forcing your playing partners to pick up your slack in terms of time your group is taking. I was put on the clock twice this year in tourneys, and both times it was because of one clown like this. One time I was able to get a roving official to follow our group to monitor our play in case we were assessed a penalty and another time I was not. I ended up by rushing my own play in an attempt to compensate for DBag McSlowplay and my own score suffered because of it. If the PGA Tour wants to get serious with guys like this and set an example, they need to start suspending guys from tournaments for multiple slow play infractions and publicize the h*ll out of it. You want to play out here? Fine. Play by our rules, or you don't get the opportunity.

Being forced to make up the time is the absolute truth. Now I admittedly probably play a bit too fast. I could walk most courses and get in 18 in 2.5 hours, easy. I actually stopped playing for a few years because of playiing in groups that had one or more guys like this video. The last straw was 15-20 practice swings on the tee; duff it a couple yards; 15-20 practice swings; duff it a couple yards; repeat more times than you'd believe. Then the ranger was screaming at me to pick up the pace when I'd hit the second it was safe. Honest to god, 4-5 hour 9 hole rounds. Nobody playing says a word, but everybody is out of synch from waiting. BTW, I walked off the course that day and didn't play for quite a while.

Maybe an actual clock, like in the NFL, would help. Give them a big 40 second countdown clock in front of them. How about giving undrafted college pass rushers jobs? When the buzzer goes off they get to rush the golfer and sack him. Seriously, maybe a yardage penalty for a clock violation.
